Texans' Johnson doubtful against Colts with left knee sprain

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson could miss Houston's game against Indianapolis on Sunday after injuring his knee against Carolina.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said an MRI on Johnson's sprained left knee revealed no damage that would require surgery, but that it was "doubtful" he would play Sunday.

Kubiak and Texans trainer Kevin Bastin said they should know more about Johnson's condition after he is evaluated sometime in the middle of the week.

"We're concerned with Andre right now and we can't answer all the questions right now," Kubiak said. "We expect him back, no doubt, and we hope it's sooner than later."

Johnson sprained his knee during the fourth quarter of the Texans 34-21 win over the Panthers on Sunday. He was hurt after falling awkwardly on his knee following a 10-yard reception and remained on the turf for several minutes.

He was able to walk off the field on his own, but could be seen limping on the sideline.

"After seeing the film, we're fortunate," Bastin said. "It could have been worse based on the way he was twisted around."

Bastin said Johnson is wearing a brace on his knee to keep him from moving it and that there was minimal swelling Monday, a positive sign.

Johnson had seven catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday and his 262 yards receiving in the first two games rank fourth in the NFL.

It will be a major blow to the team if Johnson can't play in Sunday's AFC South matchup against the Colts. The Texans will look to Kevin Walter and rookie Jacoby Jones to fill in. Walter has two receptions for 17 yards this season and Jones has two catches for 33 yards.

Kubiak said Andre Davis, who has been inactive for the first two games, could also help out if Johnson is unable to play.

Johnson has missed just three games in his five-year career.

Calling Daniel Owens being the #1 receiver.

My boy Omebi Okeye is gonna need a huge game along with that d-line to make sure Indy can't run wild.

Owen Daniels bro. Owen Daniels.:P

A TE as your #1 receiver is not a good thing. I don't care if your Tight End is Tony Gonzalez or Shannon Sharpe.

This is Jacoby Jones' time to step up after being nowhere to be found so far.
