"Joba Rules" could be changing...about time!

Recommended Posts

Back for more: The Yankees do not have Joba Chamberlain as an available reliever on Saturday, one day after the 21-year-old rookie threw two scoreless innings against the Blue Jays, but that could soon change.

As the organization's "Joba Rules" continue to evolve, Torre said that it was possible the Yankees may alter the plan so that Chamberlain is able to pitch on back-to-back days, something that he has yet been forbidden to do but is in favor of trying.

Such an arrangement would prove beneficial in the postseason, just as the Yankees brought Chamberlain in for only one out against the Orioles, perhaps simulating a situation that could arise in October.

Torre said that if the Yankees were to ask Chamberlain to pitch on back-to-back days in the postseason, he would "probably" want to see it in September first. Pitching coordinator Nardi Contreras, the architect of the so-called "Joba Rules," consults regularly with Torre on the subject of Chamberlain's use and any possible evolution.
