I'm not sure what I think of this. Yeah, Bradley is a jerk, but I can't stand it when umps make the game about THEM.

Bradley is thrown to ground by manager

SAN DIEGO - Padres outfielder Milton Bradley injured his right knee when manager Bud Black spun him to the ground in an attempt to keep him from going after first base ump Mike Winters.

The Padres were livid, claiming that Winters baited Bradley, leading to a confrontation that overshadowed Colorado's impressive three-game sweep of the wild-card leaders.

Bradley, whose volatile temper has overshadowed his talent during his career, called it "the most unprofessional and most ridiculous thing I've ever seen."

"It's terrible. And now, because of him, my knee's hurt," said Bradley, a second-half catalyst for the Padres who was in his third game back from an injury that sidelined him for nearly two weeks. "If this costs me my season because of that, he needs to be reprimanded. I'm taking some action. I'm not going to stand pat and accept this because I didn't do nothing wrong."

Asked about his knee, Bradley said: "I've got to get an MRI. It's killing me, though."

Crew chief Bruce Froemming wouldn't allow a reporter to speak with Winters.

Froemming said Bradley "got grumpy with Mike Winters. Winters told him to knock it off and he continued it. There is no covering up what he did. He had to be physically restrained."

The Padres squandered an excellent chance to gain ground with a 7-3 loss at home to the surging Colorado Rockies.

The Padres retained their half-game lead in the wild-card race over Philadelphia, while the Rockies pulled within 1 1/2 games by winning their season-high eighth straight.

San Diego stayed 2 1/2 games behind first-place Arizona in the NL West with seven to play. Colorado is four back of the Diamondbacks with six games remaining.

He was out of control and it is not unusual for a coach to restrain a player in that circumstance. it didnt really seem like he "threw him to the ground" as much as he was just trying to restrain him from his hissy fit, and get him away from the ump.

The first base coach said something along the lines of "In 26 years of pro baseball, that was the most unprofessional thing I've ever heard."

Apparently, the ump called Bradley a POS.

Bradley is a hothead and has had issues in the past, but this really looks like the ump had a mission.

If the ump called him a POS then SOMETHING should be done about it. That's just plain baiting. The umps are suppose to be impartial. This hardly sounds like it if indeed he did call him a POS.

That 1st base coach was Bobby Meachem. As anyone who has followed the Yankees for a while will know, he was a Steinbrenner "whipping boy" way back when. However, he was a solid citizen, and as far as I can remember, his reputation was "solid gold" in Baseball; a real classy, soft-spoken guy.

If he said that the ump did something not right, then I take his side.

He may ahve baited him, but so what? He was going to hit an umpire; he probably would've been suspended for the rest of the sason, the postseason and a good chunk of next season. Robbie Alomar got that much, minus the postseason, for spitting. If he took a swing at an ump, it would be much more.

Bradley is a dope, albeit a talented dope. There's good reasons he gets traded every 10 minutes. Why should he have put Black and Meacham in the position in the first place, other than being a selfish jerk? The reason you have managers and coaches is to make a player's arguments for them in exaclty that situation. I don'tr care what the umpire said; you cna never allow players to strike or threaten violence on an umpire, Tim Dongahy excepted.

who said he was going to hit the umpire? The guy has been a hothead his whole career and hasn't taken a swing at an umpire from what I remember.

Accoring to the 1st base coach & the 1B, who I believe was Todd Helton, the umpire called Bradley a POS. Which is probably true. but what player wouldn't go nuts if an umpire called him that?

I'm sure nobody feels too bad for Bradley, including me, and he has earned that, but the umpire is in the wrong here, if all reports are correct. HE is the one that should be suspended and prohibited from working playoff games and thus making extra $$ this year.
