Mean Papi Green
Navy to alter swastika-shaped barracks The Navy will spend as much as $600,000 to modify a 40-year-old barracks complex that resembles a swastika from the air, a gaffe that went largely unnoticed before satellite images became easily accessible on the Internet. The Navy said officials noted the buildings' shape after the groundbreaking in 1967 but decided against changing it at the time because it wasn't obvious from the ground. Aerial photos made available on Google Earth in recent years have since revealed the buildings' shape to a wide audience. The Navy approved the money to change the walkways, landscaping and rooftop solar panels of the four L-shaped barracks, used by members of the Naval Construction Force at the Navy's amphibious base at Coronado, near San Diego. "We don't want to be associated with something as symbolic and hateful as a swastika," Scott Sutherland, deputy public affairs officer for Navy Region Southwest, told the Los Angeles Times. Online commentators remarked widely about the buildings' resemblance to the **** symbol. Dave vonKleist, host of "The Power Hour," a Missouri-based radio-talk show, said he wrote to military officials calling for action. "I'm concerned about symbolism," he said. "This is not the type of message America needs to be sending to the world." The Navy decided to alter the buildings' shape following requests this year by Anti-Defamation League regional director Morris Casuto and U.S. Rep. Susan Davis. "I don't ascribe any intentionally evil motives to this," Casuto said of the design. "It just happened. The Navy has been very good about recognizing the problem. The issue is over." Interesting. You'd think that the US military would have had the foresight to know that coming technology would eventually expose the shape of the barracks from the air. Do you really not realize how horribly offensive and disgusting it is then? Just because it wasn't created to be a symbol of hatred, it is undoubtedly a symbol of hatred and genocide today. Which is f*cking obvious or so I thought.

So, an ancient symbol should be stripped from the Hindu and Buddhist culture? I think we can be a bit more intelligent and educate ourselves with the truth regarding the symbol. Should we ban the Christian cross because of the countless genocides during the Crusades?

You are fighting a losing battle my friend. The swastika is a symbol of genocide and hatred, whatever it's original meaning was is not the point. The U.S. military simply should not have a building in that shape, especially when so many lives and limbs were lost fighting against it. Tell me you're joking and that will make sense. No, I'm not joking. I know the history of the symbol, which was around centuries before N*zi Germany adopted and modified the symbol. I do agree the symbol used by N*zi Germany is offensive and I don't condone using it. But, I'm intelligent enough to realize the difference between the two. Arsis
I don't know, I mean the ****'s were pretty messed up but this symbol is pretty old compared to the ****'s. No need to tarnish a religious symbol because some assbag tried to taint it. I say it's about time to strip this symbol of it's hateful meaning and bring it back to it's peaceful religious meaning.
