Humble Pie

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

FOXBOROUGH -- As the media entered the Patriots locker room today at Gillette Stadium, many of the players were wearing the same T-shirt, with the same words on it.

The gray T-shirt had the words "I eat it" on the front. On the back were the words "humble pie."

The T-shirts were made by linebacker Adalius Thomas.

"It was just some fun, sort of a change-up," said Thomas, who was one player drawing a large media crowd today. "Be humble, or get humble. You have to humble yourself every day in life. It was just a fun idea to do it.

"Sometimes you do need some humble pie. You think you're better than what you really are, and so we get a nice dose of humble pie."

One player noted that a special sweatshirt was also produced for coach Bill Belichick, but the message was slightly different than what the players wore. The sweatshirt for Belichick had the words "I serve it" on the front, with the words "humble pie" on the back -- which reflects how Belichick seemingly has a knack for not allowing players to have an inflated opinion of themselves.

The players wore the T-shirts to their team meeting this morning.

I think Max needs to make shirts like this with a steaming plate of hotcakes on the back.

CLEARLY the Patriot players love playing for their coach. You can all call him what you want - but man, the players have nothing but respect for the guy. These shirts are a sign of team unity. I love it. Sure it helps when you are winning - duh - but I think it's cool as heck. And, golly, if that doesn't help team spirit, they could always que-up some old fight video.

The fact that they wore t-shirts boasting how humble they are makes them ****y arrogant trash!!!!

It's just an inside joke that they were talking about the past couple weeks. They've been blowing out teams and even then the players say that Belichick still makes them feel like $hit.

Clearly they didn't give those shirts out on the field at the chargers playoff game.

By the way, i have a similar shirt,

Yeah, i am sure they would love him just as much at 3-13 for a season or two. C'mon now.

Guess the NY Times doesn't help with people's reading comprehension skills.....bummer.

Actually it helps immensely, you said "sure it helps to be winning." I don't think it "helps," I think it is 100% the reason for why they like playing for the guy. They don't pay well, they don't show much loyalty to the players, they feel that their system is bigger then any player. Not saying this is a bad strategy, but if you were one of the players would you feel so much love for the team if you were NOT a perrenial bowl contender?

I read your post fine garb. The guy is a POS as a human, nobody loves bill for bill, they love being a dynasty.

I think Mangini is a POS as a human...I bet Pete Kendall agrees ;)

I see your point, really I do. I'm wearing blue, red, white and silver glasses though, so it's kind of fuzzy. Still, BB has never thrown a player under the bus...ever. He simply lets a player go - and doesn't speak of it. He is fair with his players. He emphasizes the mantra: No one is better than the team. Sure, when it is a winning formula - the players buy into it. Would they if they were 0-4? Honestly, if they played with effort - and improved each week - yah, I think so.

All of america hates the Pats... they make it too easy...

They will not win it all this year and they will fall apart because of it...

Hate saying this, but your prediction just made me feel pretty good about my team's chances this year. I'm pretty sure it's because all your predictions are Gawd awful. :P

Branch might disagree with you about such things.

Branch was never humiliated...he was under contract and just did not show up to camp...BB never disparaged him publically. Never said anything negative about the guy besides clearly showing that he did not think he was worth the money. Put it this way, he has never put a captain in the rookie dorms nor has he ever put a player in a position to humiliate himself on national tv.

I remember watching that game with Kendall at center - well beyond his capabilities and well into the 3rd/4th qtr? I remember Kendall - dejected - returning to the sidelines. I remember Coles and two other players coming over to console Kendall. It didn't look harmonious then and it does not look harmonious now. And yes, if the Jets were winning this would not be a big issue. If the Jets showed improvment this would not be an issue.

He sounds like a real swell type of guy. I bet us Jets fans really care.

Do you even watch football??? They don't pay well??? Really??? Maybe you should ask Dan Koppen, Matt Light, Ty Warren, Richard Seymour, and Adalius Thomas, how well they pay, all recived big time contracts in the last two years. Or maybe you should take a look at the fact that the Patriots have more players on the roster averaging over a million $$ a year than 28 other NFL teams. Sorry but if your going to run your mouth, at least know what your talking about.

The Patriots have beaten 4 teams this year... that would be impressive... if all 4 of those teams weren't 1-3...

The Pats opponents only have 4 wins between the four of them...

Lets see what happens when they play a good team...

Take it easy rookie. I'll run my mouth just as i see fit, i am JN royalty!

So Brady didn't take less money so that they could go get him some wr's? Dude, everyone knows right now they are going on a spending spree.

...explain spending spree when Moss took less to come here as did Thomas. They only "over-spent" on Welker - giving up a second rounder....and quite frankly, if his production so far is any indication, they actually did not over-pay.

Last time I checked all teams have the same salary cap, right? So, it's up to the team to spend their money wisely, right?

'nuff of this though. Bit thinks Alk and I are gloating. I disagree, but I like and respect Bitonti - so I'm out.

Just be glad that SD fired Shotty Sr. and Mangini is stubborn Alk...

1. Belichick beat Marty with an inferior team. This year would be no different.

2. How is Mangini being stubborn? Other than still standing by your boy Chad.

Pouha needs more starting reps

The defense needs to be more aggressive like last season

The offense needs to be more like last season

Kendal?
