Maxman
He is 36 years old. This year he gave up 27 home runs. 192 ip and 239 hits allowed. Batters hit .301 against him this year. This was one of his better seasons actually. He is a decent pitcher. A nice 5th starter on a good staff. Not the kind of guy you should lose postseason baseball games to. The Yankees need to jump out early tonight and set the tone. You can not lose a deciding game to Paul Byrd.

ShadowJet35
Dammit Yankees, once I begin to lose hope and relax and focus on football you do this to me. You go out and instead of lying down like you should, you win. Got Dammit, you win. You give me the hope that you will make a comeback, thus building my enthusiasm for it to come back crashing down. I hate you Yankees, got dammit, I hate you, darn you, darn you all to HECK!
mbn007
On paper, this is the biggest mismatch in the Series, perhaps in the entire playoffs, to date. However, the game is not played on paper. Yankees need to rock Mr. Byrd and early. He has excellent control, but will not overpower anyone. Just go the opposite way with his off-speed stuff, and we should be able to get him. shawn306
The only thing that matters is winning tonight. It doesn't matter if it is Byrd or Sabathia pitching. The Yankees win tonight they go back to Cleveland for a game 5 on Wednsday night with a fully rested Pettitte, and a young Cleveland team that has never been in that spot before other than Lofton. I still like the Yanks chances of winning this series.

Maxman
Bluffing is an interesting scenario. I always felt baseball was too much of a gentleman's sport. I would build a stadium with bullpens that were hidden from the other team. I would announce that my big righty was starting game one. Roll him out there and take him out after one pitch. Then bring in my lefty to face an all lefty lineup. George, call me --- I have plenty of ideas like this!

Yankees Classics recently showed game 5 of the ALCS between the Yankees and the Royals. Herzog went with a righty Dennis Leonard. Billy loads the lineups with lefties (Chambliss, Nettles, Carlos May, Oscar Gamble, Mickey Rivers etc). Herzog pulls Leonard like 3 or 4 batters into the game and brings in a lefty Paul Splittorff who if you remember was one of those lefties who just killed the Yankees. (Mike Caldwell who pitched with the Brewers was another lefty who always killed them.) It will be intersting to see who Wedge goes with. I think if he goes Sabathia and loses the Tribe will be toast. If he goes with Byrd, and loses he has Sabathia and Carmona for game 5.
Jetsfan80
The Indians should be going for the throats right now. Paul Byrd is not the answer for them. The only reason I can see for Wedge to throw Byrd on the mound is that he would rather a veteran pitch in Yankee Stadium than throw a youngin' out there. If Byrd does start, it could very well cost Cleveland the series. Why would they be playing for a 5-game series when they can win it in 4, tonight? Start Sabathia Game 4. Carmona in Game 5 if necesarry. His decision is made for him; Wedge is an idiot if Byrd sees the mound tonight.

Byrd is a 15 game winner but the Yanks line-up gets to that type pitcher sooner or later. Perfect example was Westbrook.
Kidhuman
I was thinking the same exact thing. Wy would rd start. If he sucks, will Sabathia come out of the pen? If it does go to 5 games, then its Sabathia and Fausto from the pen. Maybe they are counting on crushing Wang again and holding the Yanks off that way. You never know. I'm not a betting man, but if I was, I'd say there's an excellent chance Joe Torre's job will be safe until Tuesday, because this series is headed back to Cleveland for a 5th game. When Greg Maddux wanted a personal catcher I was okay with the thought. He was one of the top pitchers in the game. The loss of offense wasn't as big a deal. When a career journeyman has one, I don't agree. I know he won 15 games this year but cmon he sucks!
