Three students checked into a hotel and paid the clerk $30 for a room ($10 each). When the hotel manager returned, he noticed that the clerk had incorrectly charged $30 instead of $25 for the room. The manager told the clerk to return $5 to the students. The clerk, knowing that the students would not be able to divide $5 evenly, decided to keep $2 and to give them only $3.

The students were very happy because they paid only $27 for the room ($9 each). However, if they paid $27 and the clerk kept $2, that adds up to $29. What happened to the other Dollar?

He lost $1020 dollars. (but of course he can take a short trem capital loss on it at tax time. ;) )

it is misleading, you are not supposed to add the 2.00 but subtract it. The room was 25 bucks paid to the cashier and 2 paid to the clerk. Another way of thinking about it, the kids paid the clerk 30 for a 25 dollar room, but were only given back 3 bucks change and the clerk pocketed the extra 2 bucks change.

White, for two different reasons

white polar bears are the only bears that are one specific color and are the only ones that occupy their own area. Black and brown grizzlies and other types can be mixed around geographically, so white is the only guess that makes sense.

The scientific answer is the bear is on the north pole because he is pretty much circling the north pole, IT would have to be this because anywhere else (except i guess the south pole where there are no bears), the bear woud be about a kilometer west of his origin, but all the way up top, the lattitude lines bend, so he goes in an arc, forming a kind of triangle with a curved bottom.

ring =y

the box equals the value of the ring(Y) +190

x=190+y

substitute x with the formula above

y+190+Y =200

2y=10

y=5

At a party, everyone shook hands with everybody else. There were 66 handshakes. How many people were at the party?

i am sure there is a math formula for this, but i am out of school for a while, so i worked out a pattern from figuring out handshakes from 1-8 people, and figured out it is the sum of the people -1

eg

2 people

1 handshake

3 people

1+2=3 handshakes

4 people

1+2+3=6 handshakes

so for this i just added sequential numbers until i came to 66, then added 1 to the last number added

1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11=66 so 12 people
