Barton
Lets stop screwing around with a bunch of #2 and #3 starters and get a real ace. I love Chien Meng Wang but he's not a real ace, he's just the Yankees ace. I'd offer Wang, Melky and a prospect for Santana. I doubt the Twins can get a young proven cost controlled pitcher [Wang] + a young proven cost controlled guy in CF to replace Hunter [Melky] + another solid prospect from any other team. Most guys of Wangs caliber are not nearly as affordable as him, and teams arent willing to trade those guys. The Yankees should be willing to trade Wang, and according to Peter Gammons they talked to the Twins about it right after they lost to the Indians. Other teams are going to offer a bunch of highly rated prospects, and the Twins could go that way, but prospects arent proven like Wang and Melky are. And I really do not want to trade Melky, because I think alot of him, but for JOHAN SANTANA, I pull the trigger on trading him. We can replace Melky on the FA market with Aaron Rowand. Another thing - I am not gonna try to make Santana out to be the greatest pitcher ever, because he isn't. He is slightly and i mean just slightly overrated in my book, but he is still a top 3 pitcher in baseball and he's only 28 yrs old!

There is going to be a huge bidding war between the Mets, Yankees, Angels, White Sox & Red Sox when he becomes a free agent.
Barton
How many years are left on his contract? There is going to be a huge bidding war between the Mets, Yankees, Angels, White Sox & Red Sox when he becomes a free agent. Are you are assuming he becomes a free agent? I am not. He's slated to become a free agent after the 2008 season (next year), but the Twins know they wont be able to offer him 170+ million contract, so they're gonna listen to offers starting right now up until the trade deadline next year. They already have been listening to offers, fwiw. If you want Santana, get him now in a trade and lock him up to a long term deal before he hits the open market. Thats the only way to make sure he's yours.
Maxman
Yes the Yankees need to spend more money. That is the problem. Or they can continue what will bring them World Championships and stay the course. Jaba might be an ace (Wang is not -- I stated this in the first Indians game and took crap for it). But spending more money -- giving up kids is NOT the answer.
TaborJet
Stay the course. Let the young players on the team try to develop, UNDER TORRE, for a year. Wang Pettitte Hughes Chamberlain Kennedy By the middle of next season, That could be a very good rotation.

He's a good role player, and I want to keep him too, but not at the expense of a LEGIT #1 SHUTDOWN YOUNG ACE. And thats what Johan Santana is - A LEGIT #1 SHUTDOWN YOUNG ACE. GimmeShelter
Don't forget you also need Don Zimmer back Barton as according to you he was the mind behind the 96-00 run. Santana will never leave Minny.
K-Rhodes25
that would be the perfect addition to the rotation johan, wang, pettitte, hughes, joba/kennedy that sounds like a pretty awesome rotation to me

No Zimmer won't as I believe the homer station YES was instructed not to even have the camera on him during his last year here...just read in the Minny papers that Santana would waive his no trade for the right team and contract but the Twins President said he's staying and will be looked at after Tori Hunter gets signed,,,,we'll see. anskyruben
Someone sticky this thread. THIS is what the Yankees need. Tell Afraud to take a small raise or Get the fawk out of town. The money needs to go to pitching. The Yankees won championships in the dynasty days with pitching, while the Indians were scoring 10+ runs a game. Barton
Do I really have to respond to this again? Please tell me no. Why you dont want a legit #1 young ace on your team? Sure, go right ahead and explain that to me please.

Jetlag
As much as I LOVE Santana (I'm a bit of a Twins fan as I lived in Minny for 2 years when I was a kid and my first ball game was at the Dome). But not for that price. To add to that, I'd be more pissed about losing Melky. He not only was one of the FEW contributing this post-season but I think he has great chemistry with many players on this team, especially Cano. Believe it or not those 2 are really the building blocks of this teams offense for the future.

You seemed to like him at that time. .....BTW he was 10-1 down the stretch during their play-off run in 06 none of em big games though. He also beat the Yanks in the 04 play-offs and left with a 5-1 lead in another game.
