Surgery Tomorrow

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled to get ear surgery tomorrow morning at 10:15 to (hopefully) repair the hearing in my right ear. I'm 75% deaf in my right ear thanks to some chronic ear infections as a kid, so the specialist thinks there's a good shot it can be repaired.

Anyways, I've never had surgery before, so I'm a little nervous. There going to be putting me under general anesthesia. Of course, the 2 nights before the surgery, I'm watching tv and a preview for some movie about a guy who is still awake under anesthesia during surgery comes on. Just what I need.

Anyone else have surgery lately? What can I expect after receiving general anesthesia?

I had my ACL,MCL & PCL repaired after a horrible knee injury....and I was semi awake during the procedure...I was out...because I couldn't talk....but I was awake...I was even aware they were drilling my knee with a screw gun.

****ED UP....So when I saw that movie....I freaked out. It happens....it kinda happened to me!

The general made me throw up in the recovery room. I don't like the GA.

I've had 4 knee surgeries, a hand surgery and an appendectomy so maybe I'm used to them so to me it's no longer a big deal. If you did your homework and have a good doctor everything will be fine. Best of luck Mav, hope everything goes well.

I had reconstructive ear surgery in my left ear when I was a child. It was one of 3 surgeries on my ear. My left eardrum was recunstructed with skin from my head and tiny bones were rebuilt with cartilage. Pretty cool. It brought me from zero hearing in that ear to about 30%. I also had reconstructive ankle surgery and a second one to remove all the metal.

Good luck with the surgery, Mav.

You'll be fine.

The anesthesia methods have changed some. I had surgery not too long ago, maybe two years?

Anyway, supposedly you're not so far under that you cannot communicate, but trust me, you will not remember a thing.

Best wishes.

The guy who's performing my surgery has a good rep. He is a retired Air Force colonel and He was the head of his dept. at Walter Reed Military Hospital in VA. Supposedly one of the best.

Thanks for all the well-wishes. As long as they don't confuse my surgery with the guy two hospital rooms down scheduled to have his arm amputated then I'm not gonna worry too much.

Bob, I assumed the hearing loss was caused by having to listen to GOB's bulls*** for the last 23 years.

Smizzy, what the hell did you do that you ended up tearing an MCL, ACL, PCL, and anything else ending in CL?

BBall. .They had to take a piece of my hamstring and make an ACL out of it because mine was shredded ,like the end of a dust mop. And back then...they weren't sure If you could get anything (AIDS) from a cadaver so i didn't want to chance it. It was horrible mainly because I went to a BUTCHER.

Good luck with your ear

Damn Smizz, sounds just like what happened to me. Everything except the B-ball and my ACL was torn off (unattatched). The butcher part is the same too.

On days like today...when it's cold...my right leg feels like it has concrete in it.

Yeah mine still has the screw and staples in it and Maine winters wreak havoc with it too.

I actually woke up during the cleanout too, couldnt feel anything though. Spinals suck.

Once in a great while Ill whack into the bedframe at the foot of the bed. The front where the screw head is the Doc severed a nerve or two, so theres a 10 inch circle where there is no feeling. I cant stand the feeling of jeans rubbing on the dead flesh. But the screw tip sticks out of the bone a bit in back and rubs (irritates) the calf muscles like hell. He refuses to remove it too!!

Yep, this. Not everyone feels sick after it though. The time I had some crap removed from my nose, they refused to give me any food in case I got sick. 10 minutes later, the nurse came in to see me eating a bunch of chocolate bars that my parents had left in.

They got me my dinner rather sharpish.

What did you say? Hello? Hey Mavrik did you say something? Talk louder! LOL!!!

Hey I hope the surgery goes well. I have had a few minor procedures in the past few years (tran-op) and they knock you out good. You wake up groggy but no worries!

Good luck.

My uncle is a ENT, he says one of the best things to do before surgery, besides the obvious of not eating, is to take some laxidives (spelling?). Since you will probably be on a form of vicodin, oxy, perc, you won't be able to take a chit for a few days.

That's his advice. Anyway, enjoy the pain killers, bring some to miami if you have any extra. ;)

That same uncle told me a story of when he was getting his hip replaced, they had to hammer something into his femor. He said he woke up in the middle of surgery screaming, "you have to stop, you are in my femor!". Then all he remembered was the docs putting the gas mask on.

crazy part was, he was right. Not that they were doing anything wrong, but ****...that is some scary stuff to wake up during surgery.

I would up during an upper endoscopy last year. They have this camera down my throat and are having a good old time checking things out on the monitor. I started freaking out. They knocked me out again. When I asked them about it later the Doctor acted like he didn't remember it.

It happened Doc. I haven't had to battle the old gag reflex like that since the last time I slept over Smizzy's house.

Those damn doctors do that kind of stuff just for kicks. the guy that put me out found out i was a jet fan and started ripping on them (this is just after the pats man-handled them), so i get into this tirade about whatever...but this is after he had drugged me. i remember slurring my words and passing out.

i talk to my mom later, a nurse, says that the drug they gave me only makes me feel like i passed out, but i am actually wide awake and normally very talkative. God only knows what i said to that man. :rl:

Well I just got home from St. John's hospital in Detroit. Had my surgery at 10: 15 and it lasted only 50 minutes. They had applied the anesthetic shortly before 10 and it's funny, because they wheel me into the operating room and I'm sitting there waiting while everyone's getting prepped, and I close my eyes for a second, open them and look over at someone and ask them "when are you guys gonna start with the surgery?". The nurse laughs and says to me "Your surgery is over with". Looked up at the clock and it was 11:10.

Feeling a little groggy, but otherwise doing alright. Having some dizziness but nothing to serious. Have all next week off from work so plan on just taking it easy, playing some FIFA08. Nursing staff was great, but I don't think I ever want to have to get surgery ever again.

Thanks again to everyone for the well-wishes. It's good people like you guys that make me enjoy this website, regardless of how bad the Jets are. Cheers.

LOL!

I got my tonsils taken out in 1990 and woke up during the procedure also. they had the tube down my throat when I woke up and I was freaking out because I couldn't breathe. they were telling me to relax, heh. somebody chloroformed me with something on a rag shortly afterwards.
