NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE (TICKER) -- Major League Baseball on Monday announced that the Chicago White Sox will play the New York Mets in the 2008 Major League Baseball Civil Rights Game.

The game will be played on March 29 in Memphis. It will pay tribute to one of the country's most significant eras of social change and honors Major League Baseball's involvement in the historic struggle through which legendary African-American players broke barriers and made important contributions to American society.

"Last year when we held the inaugural Major League Baseball Civil Rights Game, its impact was so significant that we decided to make it an annual event," Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said in a statement. "It was a proud moment for all of baseball and I am excited that two great franchises have committed to carry on this significant tradition. Major League Baseball and its players have contributed immensely to this movement and will continue to play an important role in our society's social history."

The game will be played at AutoZone Park, home of the Class AAA Memphis Redbirds. The game will culminate two days of events commemorating the Civil Rights Movement.

"The invitation from Major League Baseball asking us to take part in this year's Civil Rights Game is a tremendous honor," said White Sox general manager Ken Williams. "The role baseball has played in promoting civil rights and cultural change in this country has great personal significance for me and for many other members of the White Sox organization.

"Baseball's history and tradition need to be remembered, celebrated and constantly re-evaluated by everyone connected with the game. The Civil Rights Game provides us all with an annual opportunity to do just that, and we look forward to playing in this year's exhibition contest against the Mets."

Whats the purpose of the civil rights game?? Its just a spring training game that probably few of our regulars will play in. Unless they only play minaya hispanics.
