Pennington And Coles For A 1st And 4th

Recommended Posts

JetNation.com has learned that the Jets have had conversations with the Kansas City Chiefs about a blockbuster trade. The Jets would send both Chad Pennington and Laveranues Coles to Kansas City in exchange for the Chiefs 1st round pick. The Jets would also receive a 4th rounder and a possible 2nd day pick in the 2009 draft. The 2009 pick would be tied in some way to performance. We are told that a deal is essentially in place and it will be announced in the off-season.

The Jets would like to avoid a situation next year where both Chad and Coles are unhappy in camp. The staff likes what they see from Kellen Clemens this year and they are ready to proceed in that direction. The Chiefs are under the 2008 cap and since Chad and Laveranues both have manageable cap numbers, this deal is workable. Herman Edwards is under tremendous pressure in Kansas City to improve an offense that has been very unproductive under his watch.

As with any trade there is always a chance it won

Lets wrap him up in a cardboard box, put him on Robert Krafts front porch, ring the doorbell and then run like Hell!

But that was the Patriots fault, not Chad's. they were right on the money.

How would this trade affect our cap?

Should have been 10???

Are you forgetting that Nuge missed a FG (13), that Baker fumbled in the redzone (at least 16) and that Mangini passed up a FG to run with Smith (that would ahve made it 19).

Then takeaway the FG that came after J-Macs drop and it's 16. Chad put us in position to score 16 points today, others around him just **** the bed.

wasn't that drive the result of Revis Pick?????????

do not think it was chadwick...sorry

His price went up a little today IMO, at least to people who analyzed his performance. he played well and gave the jets a good chance to win. Had other people not have F'd up he probably could have.

Doubt it. Chad was Chad. It may have taken another drive or two but as the Pats began to recall Penny's tendencies and utter lack of arm strength it would have been another interceptionathon for Chad. They were jumping every route and barely missing INTs. It was only a matter of time. Gay dropped a sure INT and several others were missed by inches. Geez, even Vinnie came back and won a game before reverting to form.

Clemens is the now and future QB of the Jets.

I know this player may not be included with this trade, but it is one player that we could trade away without a major impact on our team.

We could trade away Justin Miller for as high as a 2nd/3rd rounder. For our team he would be at best a nickel corner and KO Returner.

We don't need him at CB since we can use our multiple CB's to use as the nickel corner. And as a KO returner we have Leon, who is as good if not better than Miller.

He is a very good piece of trade bait that can help this team.

Sorry to burst your bubble but this trade is never gonna happen. A 31 yr old back-up QB and a 29 yr old #2 receiver for a top 5 draft pick? Keep in mind the Chiefs are rebuilding and trying to play younger players, why would they waste a pick on a potential franchise player for two thirty somethings? Not gonna happen. Please let the Herm Edwards and Chad Pennington links die already!

Didn't the Chiefs trade a high #1 pick for Trent Green? (an unproven QB at the time)

This is Carl Peterson and Herm you're dealing with here, not Pioli and Bellichick.

The trade discussions happened. That is the reality of this. Several things can happen to make this deal not take place.

But both sides discussed the deal.

While this deal does favor the Jets from a rebuilding standpoint, it could make the Chiefs stronger offensively, and with their OK defense, they will be no worse than the 2nd best team in that division.

There alot of QBs in the league who are worse than Chad. And now that he relies solely on guile and accuracy there is no reason to think he cant play at this mediocre level for another 5+ years. KC has Johnson, Gonzo and Bowe - all of whom have been heavily invested-in by the Chiefs - so Chad and Coles would be complimentary albiet important players. Those high picks cost alot of money and certain teams dont believe in them from a financial/roster planning perspective - they are high risk for high reward whereas Chad/Coles is like a muny bond.

NEWSFLASH! The Jets don't have the cap room to keep Chad Pennington. If, the Chiefs want him they will wait till the Jets cut him. As for Coles, he is injury prone and not worth more than a second day pick. Maybe the Chiefs would give a 4th and a 5th for Coles and Vilma. That is a realistic goal. Herm may not be the shiniest tool in the box, but Carl Peterson would never contemplate such an absurd trade off. Wish I had some of what whoever wrote this garbage is smokin.

On the left hand side of the keyboard you will find a little button that reads "Caps Lock". Kindly press once before posting. Thanks.

PS: The Jets do have the cap space for Pennington and he will definitely not be released. Thanks for your input though.

The Jets have all the cap room they need to pull this trade off, if it is true.

On that point, you are wrong.

A ballboy an and a towel jockey might have had a discusion.Chad will be a free agent when the Jets have to release him for cap relief. Coles has been injury prone thruout his career and hjs market value would be no higher than a second day pick.

The Jets don't HAVE to release Pennington because of the cap. they have over 20 mill in cap space WITH him on teh roster.

Check your facts.

You think Pennington is worth 6+ million to set on your bench?

He is certainly worth some other team taking a flyer on him. Look at the state of Qb's in teh league.

Heck, some team I know gave another team Herm edwards for a 4th round draft pick.

I even think it is that same team that you barg about the shrewdness of one Carl Peterson ;)

NEWSFLASH! UNLESS CHAD WILL RENEGOTIATE HIS CONTRACT TO SIT ON THE BENCH, THE JETS Wont have any money to sign free agents. THATS SMART.

I thought it was a few million less, but with all the non-releases of bonus restructures that the Jets do, I was not surprised at their (allegedly) being $27M under the projected 2008 cap at this point. Dropping Chad/Coles saves another $7M to bring that to $34M. Dropping DRob clears another $6-8M depending on when we do it (assume $6M if we hope to get a pick for him). So now that's $40M. Barrett clears a couple mil more & if Barton is gone (which is unlikely unless we go after someone HIGH like Laurinaitis) that's another $3M off. So now you're at $45M under the cap.

Jesus - we could afford to give a significant amt of two top-6 rookies' guaranteed money as ROSTER bonus instead of signing bonus to save the cap later. If it's not going to be all used up this year, might as well do what we can to keep us in such good shape.

Also keep in mind the $ for moving Chad/Coles do not stop this year. It saves about $18M over both of them starting/playing here in 2009 as well.

There is PLENTY of room for us to fit a couple of these guys AND sign two more high-priced FA's like Faneca/Suggs AND re-sign Rhodes to a far more lucrative deal than he's got right now.

NO problem. This is part of the benefit of doing things on the cheap for 3 years in a row.

Just FYI, this was previously posted in this thread. Sperm is usually pretty right on when it comes to cap matters.

Seems like plenty of room to me

we're waiting Doctor know

It doesnt matter what cap space you have now. What space will you have after resigning all your players that will become free agents at seasons end. Plus any contract extensions for players you want to keep happy and any free agents that you may want to add to your roster to improve your team.Yes. You have cap space to keep Pennington. But you will have to sacrifice improving your team. Chad will be a free agent on June 01. I certainly hope the Chiefs have no interest at that time.

Again, you have not researched a subject.

The Jets have locked up all the players they want to keep, at least hypothetically-ie-there are no big names hitting teh market.

They have even spent money to this year's cap, to move more money towards next years.

They will need to extent Kerry Rhodes. That is their major cost associated with this year's team. And if they want to think of something with Nugent.

They have MANY more ways to cut players and save money. But, they DONT HAVE TO.

Again, you failed research

not for nuthin' Doc, we're pretty tolerant around here and welcoming to opposing team's fans, but here at this board we usually don't just talk out of our asses without knowing the facts-we can afford Chad Pennington and he is under contract next year and he will certainly NOT be released-not even an idiot like Herman Edwards would do something THAT stupid-and that bar is pretty low
