Cedric Houston : What could have been ?

In the draft of 2005 the New York Jets drafted Tennessee running back Cedric Houston,Houston at the time seemed to be the next in line for the Jets running back position as Future Hall Of Famer Curtis Martin was getting older by the carry. But the Jets signed Derrick Blaylock,back up running back for the Chiefs to a deal,Blaylock rushed for 8 TDS in the backup role in 2004 seemed like the logical choice,but injurys plagued him.

Entering the 2006 season the running back position for the Jets was in complete disarray,with Martin on the PUP list,with Blaylock not performing like he did in KC,and Houston only rushing 71 times in the 2005 season. The Jets drafted Leon Washington,a running back they hoped could ease their problems,and the Jets also signed former 49ERS running back Kevan Barlow to a deal.

Blaylock was a non-factor rushing for 0 TDS and remaining injured all season,Barlow did very well..but got injured as well,Washington did well for a rookie,but Houston was the brightest back in 2006 - rushing for 5 tds,and over 350 rushing ayrds,including a monster game against the hated Packers in Green Bay.

But the Jets in the offseason decided to take another turn,as they released both Blaylock and Barlow,Martin retired,and they traded for Bears running back Thomas Jones..making the Running Back depth look like this :

1.Thomas Jones - 2007 season - he struggled,rushing for few touchdowns,and not much in the yardage.

2.Leon Washington - 2007 season - Rushed for three tds,fewer carries,but progressed as the Jets kick off returner.

Houston, a day before training camp he left for personal reasons,it turns out Houston was quitting football and decided to finish getting his degree at the University of Tennessee.

The way the Jets season has gone for them,Houston could have got another shot to prove him self..the question is :

What really happened should be the question.I dont buy the personal reasons excuse in this case.Needless to say the FB position was never filled the entire year.

I think there was more to the Thyroid conditon than was let on. He was injury prone. Some players just can't take the physical and/or mental demands of the NFL. Glad he retited when he did, rather than being on the fence.
