Jetfanmack
http://www.trentonthunder.com/release/zRelease.asp#Latest (Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that Melky Cabrera, who began the 2005 season with the Thunder, has been promoted to the New York Yankees and is scheduled to start tonight against Cleveland. Cabrera was the Opening Day centerfielder in Trenton where he batted .267 with 9 HR and 44 RBI in 75 games. He holds a share of the longest hitting streak for the Thunder this season- nine games. While with the Thunder, the 20-year-old was named to the XM Satellite Radio All-Star "Futures Game" on Sunday, July 10th at Comerica Park in Detroit, MI. On June 28, Cabrera was promoted to AAA Columbus where he batted .324 with 3 HR and 11 RBI in 9 games. Cabrera is in his 4th professional season since being signed as a non-drafted free agent (11/13/01) by the Yankees.

TaborJet
This is good news. Let's give Bernie's replacement a test in the Bigs. If he comes through, that would mean Cano, Wang, and Cabrera all came up from the minors. Who said our farm system was dead?
LionelRichie
this is huge. as long as he plays defense i could care less what he does at the plate.

Maxman
They must think a LOT of this kid. Because the Yankees never do this. Ever. Good for the kid though. Bat him 9th, let Mattingly work with him and keep the pressure off him. They must keep the pressure off him and not let his head get messed up. Will be nice to see the Yankees getting a little faster though. Now it is just Giambi and Posada that clog up the basepaths!

GimmeShelter
I thought he wasn't considered a good defensive CF? GGG may be right. Melky is hot with the stick right now and a weekend of good games could send him packing. I will be shocked if not at leat one of Cano,Wang, Cabrera and Duncan aren't moved by end of month. I have seen so many conflicting reports, very strange. One site said "plus arm" "plus speed" "very good glove" Other site said "average/future corner outfielder once he gets bigger" I'm gonna have to form my own opinion based on those 2 conflicting reports once I get to see him track down some flyballs and throw the ball. Barton
Second AB ... Melky Gets his first big league hit Hopefully baseball tonight shows the clip, game isn't on for me. I got directv, the best package and it has the YES channel so I thought I would get the Yankee games everyday. And it seemed that I would have because the 1st week and half of the season I got ALL THE GAMES, then it just stopped, they no longer allowed me to watch the games on the YES Channel. We called and asked why, they bsed and said "oh its blacked out and blah blah" That was over 2 months ago, games haven't been on YES since. You know he got busted for that, right? No kidding ... first time he was with the Yankees ... Got busted for having sex with a minor ... that's why the Yankees unloaded him NOT KIDDING ... do some research and I'm sure you'll find it I think it was like the early 90's? Ham what you say is true. It happened in Milwuakee I believe. But when FO saw him he was doing nothing illegal. 16 x 2 = 32. That is perfectly legal. Luis learned from his mistakes! GimmeShelter
Melky looked good tonight. His AA manager told Michael Kay that without question, Melky will win a batting title in the majors while being a 20-25 Homer guy. Awful Mets blow-up in the ninth almost duplicated in the Bronx by Mo. Good win for the Yanks. Mets will have a tough time recovering from this one in a series they really needed to sweep. I got a recap of that interview, and that manager also said Duncan will be a superstar and he hasn't been surprised at Canos success. Keep up the good work, Melky! 8)
Green Jets & Ham
Melky looked good tonight. His AA manager told Michael Kay that without question, Melky will win a batting title in the majors while being a 20-25 Homer guy. Yeah I caught that, GS That AA manager was flatout raving about Melky ... you can hardly rave about a prospect any more than that Kay asked him if he would trade Melky straight up for a CF like Mark Kotsay or Juan Encarcion and he told Kay ... "STOP RIGHT THERE, NO WAY, Melky has All-Star potential" I actually thought about you when he said that ... cause you was under the impression he was being showcased for such a trade {and to be honest, I really wasn't sure if you was right or wrong, and it certainly seemed possible} ... but after hearing that, I am now more inclined to believe Melky will stick unless someone offers a seemingly lopsided trade in the Yankees favor {which I hope DOES NOT happen because now I REALLY wanna keep this kid} His AA manager also discussed the comment Torre made {same comment a few Yankee fans made on this board, including myself} ... "We Just want him to play defense and anything he gives us offensively is a bonus" ... his AA manager totally blew that logic out of the water when he said, "Forget that bonus nonsense, Melky is gonna hit for you guys, you can count on it" ... I think that's where he also told Kay that Melky will win a BT someday as you mentioned above? AA manager also raved about his ability to hit the breaking ball ... which David Justice then explained is the LAST THING a youngster must learn before he makes it to the big leagues ... Justice added that his ability to hit the curveball no doubt led to his being called up at the tender age of 20 Anyway, that really was kind of stunning to listen too ... I have to be honest, I had NO IDEA he was THAT HIGHLY REGARDED ... I kidded about that today in the David Wright thread, but I was mostly kidding ... I knew he was one of our top prospects and had a good chance to be a big leaguer, but I really had no idea he was THAT HIGHLY REGARDED Honest truth, that even caught me by surprise PS. I agree, he looked much more relaxed at the plate tonite ... 2 for 3 with both hits being ropes {as opposed to last nites blooper} ... I still expect some growing pains at the plate, in-spite of the high expectations for his future, but that was a glimpse into what his AA manager was getting at I suppose if you're a Yankee fan you just have to hope the growing pains will be more along the lines of Cano's initial adjustments and will not get to the point where he looks over-matched ... so long as he doesn't look completey over-matched at the plate, he'll probably stick and remain in CF for the remainder of the season OH YEAH, and I was only kidding about David Wright today as well ... I actually think he's a really good young player as well ... very impressive neophyte ... in both case {Melky and Wright} I was just having some fun with the Met fans
Maxman
Melky has a lot to prove. But he has already overcome tremendous odds. Because for the Yankees to call up a 20 year old they think he is special. They just don't rush kids. The ones they do, well they usually work out pretty well.
GimmeShelter
Oh yeah Ham it was ALYazeera propeganda at it's finest. I too was flat out floored by what Kay reported and agree in that all three of the kids may force the Yanks to rethink any trade plans. Lets hope Leiter who pitched great, is also not not a ONE GAME wonder. No Suck Luck, Yankee Haters ... Uncle Al will be the 2005 version of Sal Maglie 8) NY DAILY NEWS By Bill Madden .... So maybe instead of a band-aid, Leiter becomes the reincarnation of Sal Maglie. Like Leiter, Maglie had been a star pitcher on another New York team, the '50s Giants, when he was abruptly sold across leagues to the Cleveland Indians in 1955. The general consensus was that he was through when, early in the 1956 season, at 39, he was released by the Indians and signed by the Dodgers. History will show Sal Maglie went 13-5 for the Dodgers and played a principal role in their winning the '56 pennant. Listening to Leiter summing up his whirlwind first day as a returning Yankee, you got the feeling he fully expects a similar scenario. "I love these kinds of moments," he said. "I need them for my concentration." He figures to get plenty more of them. For this one, the Red Sox could only watch and admire. "I don't care if his ERA was 50 in florida," said Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar, who was struck out twice by Leiter. "Tonight he looked like the ERA leader. If that's the guy they released, I don't want to see the guys they kept."
