The New York Jets reached agreement Friday afternoon with former Nebraska coach Bill Callahan to be the assistant head coach and be in charge of the running offense.

Callahan was under consideration in Tampa Bay for a job but talks between the Jets and Callahan heated up over the past several days. Brian Schottenheimer remains the offensive coordinator, but Callahan was brought in to coach the offense line and work with the running game.

The former head coach of the Oakland Raiders is considered a West Coast offense specialist but is also one of the better offensive line coaches in the league. Tony Wise has been the offensive line coach but he is expected to be coaching elsewhere next season.

Schottenheimer is under consideration for the head coaching job in Baltimore and there is a chance he could have a second injury.

John Clayton, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame writers' wing, is a senior writer for ESPN.com.

I am slowing losing faith in this organization to ever deliver a quality product. Being from Nebraska I cant even begin to tell you the ignorance, arogance and absolute idiocy that Callahan displayed while Coaching the Cornhuskers.

The man knows nothing about running an effective offense, let alone fielding anything resembling a respectable running game. Get ready to watch runningbacks that fall after someone taps their feet. Poor run blocking and even worse continuity with the offense line.

I waited 4 years to get Callahan the hell out of Nebraska and he now ends up with the Jets. Its like getting kicked in the nuts by the Jets.

Just noticed you list Kansas in your data screen. I am sure you have a clue as to what I am eluding to with the Callahan incompetence problem.

Callahan is a terrible HC. Callahan has always been considered a very good OC, and even better OL coach, which is what he's doing for us. It's a good hire.

Oh yes, I know exactly what you're talking about with Callahan. I tried to be patient with the guy all the way till almost halfway through this season.

Well he ain't gonna be coachin da o fense (to put it in southern lingo) Even though he was a horrible HC (why Nebraska hired him after he messed up the Raiders?) he supposedly is a good O-line coach!

I'll take him. He's a solid coach whose been a head coach at both the NFL and Collegiate ranks and to coach our OLine and Running Game, he's a steal of a pick-up. A West Coast Offense guru could take over, if not Daboll, when Schottenheimer is sent packing.

God knows he did wonders for the Husker's offensive line. :rl:

College football is more about recruiting than it is coaching.. He wasn't good at the former.

Now as to this hire... I don't like it and it has absolutely nothing about Callahan.

I don't like the idea of a running game coordinator.. too many cooks in the kitchen..

This is a quality hiring if you ask me.

Callahan may have never shined as a HC but his credentials and reputation as an O-line coach/offensive coordinator are top notch. Bringing him in should go a long way in improving the O-line and running game.

And if Schotty leaves sometime in the near future, we have a suitable candidate for OC already on the staff.

He quit on his team mid-season at Nebraska. I have zero respect for him.

Didn't that have a more to do with the return of Tom "Lawrence Phillips Enabler"Osborne as AD? Nebraska people (and a lot of fans of big-time college teams) still think this is the era of their teams having the God-given right to be in the national title game, carrying 100 players on the roster, etc. Which is going to be Osborne or his chosen coach's downfall-who the hell wants to run the option any more? With a roster of 100 guys all looking to get their shot, Osborne was treated like God back then. But it's not 1980 any more. Now Boise State or Central Florida can get on TV and get those guys that filled out Nebraska's huge roster then. And they're running shotgun and 5 wide. Callahan may not be a great collge coach, but the problems as Nebraska have as much to do with how college football has changed and Nebraska hasn't. Nebraska, is like the GOP harkening back to Reagan, still thinks Members Only jackets and mullets are cool. It's 2008.
