The New Coldplay CD Sucks

Just bought X&Y and listened to it three times. It is VERY disappointing. The lyrics (never a Coldplay strength) are Backstreet Boy-level, the arrangements are weak, musically they venture into synth-pop territory and the one hooky tune on the album--Speed of Light--is the only song that doesn't sound like every other song on the record. Damn you Gwyneth Paltrow!

To me, "Speed of Sound" sounds too much like "Clocks" from their last album. Thanks for the review.

Speed of Sound--sorry.

Great point about 'Clocks' and 'Speed of Sound'. I read an interesting piece written by John Mayer (of all people) in Esquire where he was talking about how artists can continually recycle specific chord arrangements to produce a radio-edible track. It was great stuff. Though Mayer didn't go so far as to say it, he was suggesting that alot of these Lindsay Lohan and Avril Lavigne types can basically gargle mouthwash over the right, popular chord progression and it would be Top-40 regardless. It looks like Chris Martin knows this as well. Sad.

Perfect example of what you mentioned, Tom, is Metallica. I don't know if you are familiar with their music, but "Fade to Black" "Sanitarium" and "One" all start out with the same chord, played acoustically. And each is the 4th song on the album.

Dave Matthews is another. His Intro and verses are extremely complex guitar parts followed by basic chords in the chorus. But the formulas all work.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Brian Eno produces both U2 and Coldplay. Dare you to listen to any obscure U2 song(as if there are any) and any Coldplay song and tell the difference. Someone on the old board said that bother were Brian Eno's new incarnation of his ROxy Music leftovers. And it's true-the singing, melodies, guitar work, flourishes and crescendos aren't just similar-they're identical. I've always liked U2. But if you go back and listen to almost anything of theirs, there isn't a lot of rockin' kickass stuff, but lots of overproduced studio work-strings,pianos. And in the words of drunkard Noel Gallagher, Chris martin lloks like a geography teacher. But he got Brian ENo to make him a rock star.

That's true, especially with Dave Matthews. His song writing is very deliberate.

The pop chord progression is usually C-D-G or Em-D-C and any combination of those chords. Or sometimes they'll throw in the G-Cadd9-D-Em combo to screw with ya. They're the progessions that everyone knows. They're very safe.

None of those songs start acoustically. But they are all the most progressive songs on their respective albums. And normally the most popular for good reason.

The first songs of those albums (Ride the Lightening, Master of Puppets, and And Justice for All) all open with an acoustic and then progress into eletric's.

Also track 2 on all of those albums has the same title as the album it's on (ie Album: Master of Puppets Track 2: Master of Puppets).

Additionally either the last or second to last song on those albums is completely instrumental (aside from the few lines in "To Live is to Die"). Which was written by Cliff Burton.

I think I've discovered other similarities but can't recall them now.

Their performance of Bittersweet Symphathy wasn't bad at Live 8....of course Ashcroft sang instead of the Coldplay singer and the hook for that song was taken from the Stones song "Last Time".

Coldplay reminds me a little of the Police especially in songs like speed of sound....other than that I pass on most of their tunes.

Hey TS....

Man, you slam the Album and got the song title wrong...what gives? "Speed Of Sound" is a GREWAT track, with the type of dreamlike repeat hook that drifts and builds a base for martin's lilty falsetto. Those simple hooks carry on a tradition that John Lennon perfected...a few notes to craft an entire message...how many notes do you think "Mind Games" is??? I will agree that the rest of the album has yet to capture me...but man! You should stick to get slammed by me in the Hockey Forum or get your head outta Max's tush and have another listen...

(OK, maybe it wasn't Max's tush...I know I am supposed to be mad at you about something...ummm...oh yeah, let's think real hard...it's...that's right!)

Jack, my brother:

1) You will never be madder at me than I am at me over that "something." I will not defend myself for it.

2) The album is just lame, beat, and contrived. I expected more from Coldplay on it and was disappointed. Speed of Sound is a nice track, but the rest of the album is very one-note, don't you think?

You know what I did last Saturday night that you didn't?

That was a low blow! My brother's been to many concerts, I've gone to quite a few myself, and the one I miss out on because something that never happened ends up being his favorie concert, saying it was absolutely amazing and that Maiden never missed a beat. They are preparing a new album for release sometime next year, if you didn't hear. Hopefully it'll be awesome, but that delays them even longer from having a classical setlist tour, as they get older. Poor me.

(P.S. Get MGS4, the single player is fricken amazing, even if you haven't played the other ones, as I have only played the first. Not to mention the fact that you could meet both me and ecurb online--I saw he also has the game. Check out IGN's review, they said they would've given the game an 11 out of 10 if it was possible.)
