****The official trash an irresponsible business thread****

I figure what better place to share stories of crappy business practices where you have not been properly treated or ripped off by incompetent businesses. I'll start:

I deposited a check made payable to me at Bank of America in one of their newfangled retarded ATM's. The check was payable to me, but I deposited it to my corporation, a completely legitimate and legal thing to do as I am named on the account as President. The check was for $10k. A week later I just happened to notice that my balance was missing exactly $10k and I saw that they reversed that deposit. I call up to find out what happened, thinking the check bounced. After waiting for 45 minutes, I I finally got a hold of someone who could not explain why the check was reversed and ended up transferring me to debit card fraud claims, who of course said they couldn't help. I thne marched over to the branch and asked for the manager.

The manager sat there and tried to tell me I was not allowed to deposit a check made payable to me into my business, but she couln't confirm that was the actual reason for the check being pulled. Now I have managed bank branches in the past, was a regional manager, and even wrote up compliance rules and regs for a smaller bank so I know what it allowed or not. I told her to call her regional or district manager to get it straight. Turns out th regional manager has no idea either, and they're now on the phone scouring their R&R books to find out. After about an hour she looks up and says "oh....you are correct".

Fantastic, now where the hell is the check I deposited!!?? She said it's in the mail. I just looked at her and calmly said "you mailed a $10,000check to me via regular first class that has not been negotiated and was endorsed by me so any idiot who gets a hold of it can double endorse it and cash it!!!??" She said "well......yeah". I shook my head and walked out. I made the deposit on the 4th of February. I finally got the check back in the mail today.

So to you Bank of America, I give a big F$ YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Citibank. "We are an international bank". Get an account with ATM access. Specify that you do not want to pay any ATM fees while overseas. Told that is no problem, as long as it is a Citibank ATM. Use the Citibank ATM and you are charged 2%. Call customer service and are told that "Italy" charges the fee. Um...false. Eventually, the admit that Citibank Italy imposes the charge. They claim to be an international bank, but cannot reverse the charges because "that is a different company". Lies!

VW of America. Let alone designing a car with wheel bolts instead of studs, but they claim that you cannot determine which key you need for the locking wheel bolt. The one the ****ing shippers apparently lost. Call the dealership where the car was bought. Referred to the salesman, the service department, the parts department. Given the VW of America customer service "hotline" in Detroit. Get such helpful hints as "bring it in" (It has a flat tire you idiot. Also, as I stated earlier in the call IT's IN ITALY) "drill it out", "use a torch" and "hammer a socket on it". While trying to figure out what sized socket to use, find a VW TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN which tells exactly how to figure what part your lock is. Apparently VW parts, sales, service and customer service all have no idea about the TSB which can be located on the internet. ****ing morons.

Squirrels in the mail to them all!

I'm aboard. BOA blows.

The Company I work for develops and sells business simulations for Colleges. Each student is required to pay us directly by either credit/debit card or cheque. As you can imagine in this day and age very few students pay by cheque.

Keep in mind that the students pay between $30-$45 to register for the simulation.

I banked a bunch of cheques in mid-January. Last week a cheque for $35 was returned to us. Why was it returned you ask?

It seems that the student wrote January 2007 on the cheque instead of January 2008.

How many people write cheques in January and use the prior year? Probably millions. I've done it before.

I would understand if the cheque was for $35,000, but $35? Are you ****ting me?

All big banks suck these day. BOA seems to stand out a little more than others but all of them suck. I actually do have a BOA story though. A few weeks ago my wife signed her check and gave it to me to cash for cash at the BOA near my work (right down the street). So I go in there and cash it for cash and the teller told me I couldn't cash it because it didn't say "Pay to the order of" on it. So I said oh ok I will go and have her put that on there. Now realize that work is about an hour away from home. Well I went to grab lunch, take a dump and then I wrote "pay to the order of" on it myself. So then went back to the same teller who proceeded to cash it. I'm still trying to figure out why it matters if you put "pay to the order of" on it? We both signed it, and you see my ID. WTF???

It doesn't. You should have asked for a manager, although the idiots they hire as managers these days probably wouldn't know either.

I left that part out. I did talk to the manager who told me the same thing. I told them that this is a valid state ID and that I could be arrested if I was pulling off anything funny. Still wouldn't let me do it.

Any bank or establishment will tell you it takes 7-10 days fopr a check to clear. Its normal SOP. They usually clear alot quicker than that. And remember, thats business days.

Not if it is a payroll check. There are lots of banks that take them same as cash.

Payroll checks and govt checks are different. You might has well have a money order in your hand.

I agree and I'm sorry that I failed to mention that part. BOA and Webster Bank (And prolly other ones too) don't accept them same as cash and it is BS.

You're all wrong. Here's the skinny on the fed regs:

Bank checks/Money Orders/Gov't check/check drawn from the same bank-available the next business day

Local checks-A local check is dependant on the routing number and the fed transit house it will go through. Each bank has a listing of what they consider local. Be aware some banks have their transit in another state so what may seem local to you may not be to the bank. Anyway checks deemed to be local may be held no more than 2 business days.

Foreign check-A foreign check is considered one that does not cleat through the local federal transit house. 5 business days.

Out of country checks AND Money Orders-They are sent on collection. The money will not be available to you until the bank actually collects it.

Payroll checks-Contrary to what you guys seem to think, Payroll checks are made available according to whether they are local or foreign. There is no immediate availability. Trust me, I've seen a boatload of payroll checks bounce.

Extended Holds-Here's the rub. At any time if a bank deems itself suspicious of the check bouncing they may opt to place an extended hold up to 10 business days. If so, they must provide you written notice of when the funds will be available and why they are holding it for longer. Reasons include repeat overdraft offenders, repeated returned deposits, suspicious account activity, and early notice from drawing bank noting fraud and or insufficient funds. Among even more reasons.

To be honest with you, I ave not cashed a payroll check in about 10 years. I have been using direct deposit and finds are always there.

Anytime I cashed a payroll check, I have gotten the finds right there. I never had to wait for them an extra business day from any bank.

Booz,

Up until Dec 31, 2007 my bank ALWAYS accepted payroll checks same as cash. There is another bank in my town that still does this. It is the big banks that won't.
