Leiter agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract with Florida in the offseason, but struggled with his control in his second stint with the Marlins and was 3-7 with a 6.64 ERA in 16 starts. He gave up 88 hits and walked 60 in 80 innings. ``It's always tough,'' Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. ``He's been a very successful pitcher. You always hate to see something like that happen. He's a real pro and a good guy.'' The Marlins have 10 days to trade him or put him on waivers. Leiter, 39, had spent the last seven years with the New York Mets, going 10-8 with a 3.21 ERA last season. He's 158-127 with a 3.76 ERA in a career that began in 1987 with the New York Yankees. Leiter also pitched for Florida in 1996 and 1997. He threw the team's first no-hitter in 1996, and was traded to the Mets during the Marlins' payroll purge following the World Series season. He also won World Series titles with Toronto in 1992 and 1993, plus pitched for the Mets in the 2000 World Series, which they lost to the Yankees. Bugg
You know what? When you have Tim Redding and Darrell May starting games and NOBODY slated for Sunday, they could do worse than Leiter. He's a leftie in Yankee Stadium. But if he walks the park and has thrown 148 pitches in 3 1/3 innings...Still the pickings are pretty slim.It comes down to whether the Yanks work out a deal or put in a waiver claim, Sawx in 1st place cannot do the Randy Myers/Jose Canseco waiver block on the Yankees. Barton
I'll take Al Leiter over May anyday of the week. Give up some 29 yr old prospect for Leiter, marlins won't get anything better than that for him

Barton
What are Leiter's #'s like against lefties? Bullpen help? IMO, Leiter would be an ideal fit for us until Pavano and Wright/Wang come off the DL. Possibly even more. I like Leiters grit. He was a very good pitcher before this season. This is his 1st season since 1999 where he'll finish with an ERA over 4 and giving up more hits than innings pitched. This season leftys are hitting .278 vs Leiter compared to .297 vs righties. BUT The last 3 years combined, Leftys are hitting just .238 vs Leiter, compared to .248 vs righties. IMO, this would help solidify the starting rotation for the short term and possibly the lefty bullpen issue for the long term (as in the rest of the season). Bugg
I'd almost be shocked if anyone but the Yanks puts in a waiver claim, because they'd have to pick up about $ 3.6 million he's owed for the rest of the year, which doesn't figure to be a salary most teams would want to pay for a guy that's at best a 5-6 inning pitcher who on his best day pitches to a 4.50 ERA. One thing-if the yanks do pick hiom up be ready for the parade in from the bullpen starting soemtime between innnings 4 to 6. Love to see what kind of ridiculously unattainable incentives the Marlins gave for any option for 2006 to vest.

Green Jets & Ham
The Yankees HAVE TO sign Al Leiter ... NOT SHOULD ... MUST We are down to TWO FRIGGIN STARTERS followed by Darrell May, Something Redding, and WHO KNOWS? This is THE MOTHER OF ALL NO-BRAINERS I will be SHOCKED {AND PISSED} if the Yankees don't claim Al Leiter TODAY!! Al Leiter being released {even at 39 and past his prime} is practically a Gift from GOD for the Yankees at this point

Leiter is a crafty, gritty lefty and IMO he'd fit in well with the Yankees and he'd be perfect for our current need of a starter.
