Oscars are a TV ratings dud

1 hour, 21 minutes ago

NEW YORK - The Oscars are a ratings dud. Nielsen Media Research says preliminary ratings for the 80th annual Academy Awards telecast are 14 percent lower than the least-watched ceremony ever.

Nielsen said Monday that overnight ratings are also 21 percent lower than last year, when "The Departed" was named best picture.

The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003, when there were 33 million viewers.

Nielsen has no estimate yet on how many people watched Sunday night, but based on ratings from the nation's biggest markets, the Oscars will be hard-pressed to avoid an ignominious record.

The show had a 21.9 rating and 33 share.

Two Reasons: 1) Nobody saw the movies that were nominated 2) Jon Stewart sucks. One of the most overrated comedians ever.

agreed. I don't know if Jon Stewart sucks in general, but he sucked last night. I don't watch his show and maybe that's a good thing. He was trying to be funny the entire night and failed every time. I was waiting for rotten fruit to be thrown at him. If I was there and I had a tomato, you better believe I would've thrown it at him, security be damned.

it was pretty well paced,,i thought stewart started off strong but slowed a tad at end..

its a tuf job being the mc,,so much depends on the material,,i liked it wehn billy crystal or jay leno did the gig and walke dthru the audience interviewing celebs off the cuff..

never liked letterman doin it,,he always seems to try 'too' hard..

of course carson was great when he did for years and years..if i had to pick one guy i would go for leno..

but stewart did pretty good ...

ditto for me. carson was a classic & billy crystal always shined. stewart was much smoother this his 2nd time. while material wasn't great he can still deliver. i'm all for giving him another shot at it next year, i think he'll get better

ya, we will see,,if he gets his 3rd invite he is in for long haul,,3 is the charm,,if not invited they will go back to leno or try a new 'hot' commodity

Ellen D was pretty good. I'm a john stewart fan & I think all he lacked was better material to be honest. I think he has the goods be a mainstay for a while.

as long as they don't give it to conan, i'm ok. Most people picked for the show have done pretty well

well if it moves to NBC, like it does every cycle or so, then i guarantee conan gets it..

Wow, standard SJ red herring implying someone is too young to have a valid opinion.

I actually did see No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood in the theaters. Saying "nobody saw these movies" was obviously an exaggeration meant to point out that the movies nominated for this year's Oscars - especially Best Picture category - were not widely seen or popular with audiences - which is big part of why ratings went down 21% this year skippy.

i didnt imply young,,just what your tastes might be,,

an exaggeration, like yours ;)

Oscar isnt about ticket sales, i assumed you knew that..

the proliferation of rentals and or dvr on demand downloads is more likely the reason so few have seen nominated flicks before oscar show and dont care..

the indy films that get nominated rely on a big post nomination and post award film take at box office,,i am sure no country will now see a renewal at box office for the masse sthat missed 1st time around
