nico002
What on gods green earth makes you people think this fat ass can handle the much harder 3-4 NT position? He has abysmal work ethic. How is he going to survive a Mangini camp? Detroit fans are sick of this guy. The flat-out think the guy is a bum and takes off a TON of plays. They want him out of there. Direct quote from relatively knowledgeable detroit fan "Personally, I wouldnt want Rogers if I was running a 3-4 defense. He already gets worn out in a 4-3 defense and takes plays off, so I wouldnt expect him to do well in a 3-4." If we trade Vilma to detroit, I want it to be for a 2nd round pick, where we can draft a NT.

This removed any credibility you ever had when it came to judging Nose Tackles in the 3-4.
KudosForND
well lets see he is really fat and still faster than drob. hmm that sounds good to me and he is not lazy.. and another thing is bc he si a huge guy and an allstar in the league they will double team him every time which will leave holes for other players to get tackles and sacks. its a team sport. We'll see. I don't like starting a rookie NT from game 1 anyway. It's not like we have to have the guy long-term if he doesn't change his tude. And if the swap involves DRob, well we would (or should) be outright releasing him if we can't find a trade partner anyway. No way he's worth almost a $12M cap hit in '08. One of those things that are simply worth a try. And we're only giving up a player who sucks in the 3-4 to begin with, whether it's Vilma or DRob. Well it's a good thing "us people" don't make the front office decisions; if our front office thinks he can handle the 34 than he's going to handle the 34. If he has the choice of making a few million a year and playing or making a whole lot less if he doesn't get in shape I think he'll get in shape. I wouldn't doubt if mangini puts a weight claus into the contract.
Irish Jet
Never ever listen to other teams fans about one of their player that are leaving. They're obviously going to be negative towards them.

Poeple said the same thing about Ted washington...you know him, the proud owner of a couple of SB rings as a NT for the Pats.
nico002
I think we should try and re-structure DROBs deal. I believe he can be very valuable on the line, just not as a NT.

So you want to give DRob like a $12M+ signing bonus right now to "try" him at DE? I doubt he takes a penny less. He's an ok player. But he's awful in the 3-4. Whether it's DE or NT, he's just not a space-eater/2-gapper. His strength, if you believe he really has one, is bull-rushing up the gut. That's what he was drafted for. Never truly panned out at that job either, and that was with two solid DE's on the line with him, though he wasn't awful. He needs to go. Better for us & better for him. Drob will never restructure his deal wiht us. Restricturing would neccesitate adding year to his deal and you KNOW that he wants out of here (and to a 4-3team) the SECOND he hits FA. On the Jets side, why wuld they want to give him MORE guaranteed money whch is what they would have to do. Not happening.
Sperm Edwards
Hope you dudes are right.. We all hope we're right, man. Or more to the point, we hope Mangini & Tannenbaum are right, since they're the only ones who can benefit the team by BEING right. Sometimes you need to try something other than what you know is not working. DRob was in the 3-4 for 2 years. He is not a 2-gapper. I don't even dislike the guy. He was playing out of position, at a thankless job at NT. I never heard him complain to the press or even insinuate that he's not crazy about the defense we run. So he was definitely a good soldier. But he just does not fit. Rogers may fit and he may not. But we don't have to cough up a mega-signing bonus to find out. He's cuttable without any cap penalty whenever we want. I wouldn't kill them for the attempt, even if it doesn't work out. They went for a guy with more than enough talent, and physical tools in general, to excel at the position. At least they'd be making an effort instead of sticking with what is known to suck.
Boozer76
Actually, the 304 suits Rogers perfectly. If he does his job and stops the run he'll be off the field after 2 plays when there's obvious passing downs.

I actually hope he can get himself in good enough shape so that this is not necessary, he has been a great pass rusher for Detroit and is almost unblockable 1 on 1. To get a glimpse of how good Rogers can be watch Detroits game vs Denver this season. Not just for the INT TD he got (which was amazing in itself) but how he broke into the backfield and blew up double blocking on just about every otehr play. It was one of the best ever performances I've seen from a DT.

Sacks from a NT happen when an OL blows an assignment or the QB holds the ball way too long. In a 3-4 sacks come from the guys who are freed up by not having to deal with the guys the NT took out. His job is to force double teams, which he does, only he was good at beating them too with Detroit. I know what you mean about the assignments of a NT and I've preached them all year long in regards to Drob, but if Rogers was in good condition on passing situations he can be effective as a rusher, even when doubled.
