Jets work on deal for defensive tackle

The Jets may be on the verge of filling the gigantic hole in the middle of their 3-4 defense with a Pro Bowler.

Although free agency starts tomorrow, the Jets have been in trade talks with the Carolina Panthers and Detroit Lions the past several days regarding Pro Bowl defensive tackles Kris Jenkins and Shaun Rogers, respectively, according to two people familiar with the Jets' intentions.

The two people requested anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the negotiations.

The Panthers and Lions are believed to be interested in Jets middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Jenkins, 6-4, 350 pounds, or Rogers, 6-4, 345 pounds, would seem to be the perfect tonic for the Jets' ailing run defense, which ranked 29th in the NFL last season.

Jenkins, a three-time Pro Bowler, is considered the better and more motivated player. Rogers, however, is a two-time Pro Bowler. Both are entering their eighth season.

Vilma, who has been given permission to seek his own deal, was in Detroit yesterday taking a physical, The Star-Ledger confirmed last night. Vilma, the 2004 defensive rookie of the year, missed the final nine games of this past season following knee surgery.

In addition to Vilma, the Panthers also may be interested in nose tackle Dewayne Robertson or draft picks. Vilma, however, seems the likely target because Carolina recently cut middle linebacker Dan Morgan (repeated concussions) and are looking for someone to replace him.

The Jets are shopping Vilma and Robertson, both of whom are ill fits in their 3-4 scheme. A team spokesman declined to comment last night.

When healthy, Jenkins is regarded as one of the most dominant interior linemen in the league. He would require constant double teams, a must for any successful 3-4 defense.

Last season, Jenkins had 38 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks in 16 games, the second straight season he played in every game. In 2004 and 2005, he played in just five games total because of right knee and left shoulder injuries.

Jenkins, a second-round pick out of Maryland in 2001, has been at odds with the Panthers' management for the past two seasons. Outspoken, he ripped the team following a loss to the Bucs early last season, calling their effort "garbage" and saying the team had "no heart, no energy and no drive," among other things.

He hasn't hidden his dislike for living in Charlotte, and reportedly isn't a big fan of coach John Fox.

Normally, the Jets would shy away from a player with a hint of character issues, but the team may think a change of scenery could help Jenkins. During his career, Jenkins has started 80 of 85 career games. He has 274 career tackles and 20 1/2 sacks.

The Lions have tired of Rogers' inconsistent play and are looking to move him. Last season, however, he played well, recording 39 tackles and seven sacks in 16 games.

Overall, Rogers has started 80 of 82 career games. He has 420 tackles and 29 1/2 sacks.

At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis last week, the Jets told anyone who would listen that Vilma is available and gave the fourth-year pro permission to seek a deal with any team except the Patriots. The Panthers and the Lions play a 4-3 scheme, which Vilma has excelled in.

Robertson, who has a $12 million cap number in 2008, is also available but the club would likely welcome him back if he restructures his contract. If the Jets acquire Jenkins, Robertson could be moved to defensive end.

Rogers? Jenkins? Who cares. I think either is a good fit for out 3/4 and an upgrade over D'Rob. D'Rob at DE...:-k. We'll see. At least it sounds like the FO has FINALLY recognized the problem and is doing something about it. Vilma in Detroit for a physical sounds like the deal could go down sooner than later.

WHOA... Kris Jenkins... What a dispointment. When Healthy No One Goes Through Kris Jenkins. But Roger's Is The Real Target here But Kris Jenkins When Healthy Is The Best DT in the NFL Nice Deal But Dispointed that we dont get Rogers

I mean this in the nicest of ways, but you are the king of contrqadicting yourself and leaving your readers completely baffled on what the hell you just said. :beer_Orcish:

Jenkins doesn't like Jacksonville and thinks the Jags have no heart? He sounds like a great fit. The Jets blow, but they have plenty of heart and always give an honest effort. Sounds like he'd might actually appreciate the boot camp and who doesn't like New York? I wouldn't mind rolling the dice on either of these guys, even if they have injury or stamina concerns. Use them and draft a rookie to groom. Worst case Pouha.

Contradicting. It was a typo. Anyway, you say that Jenkins is the best DT in the league when healthy, that no one goes through Jenkins, but you're disappointed that we don't get Rogers? So you'd rather get Rogers over the best DT in the league in your estimation? (By the way, Jenkins hasn't missed a game in 2 seasons).

Jenkins has his issues as well, although I think alot of it comes from that fact that he just hates living in the Charlotte area.

There was alot of bitterness between him and the Panthers FO this past off season.

The Panthers are alot like the Jets from what I have seen the two years I have been here. They don't say much, Toe the company line. Jenkins though is alot like Coles in that he will say what is on his mind. After a loss last season he called the team "heartless". Now some may take that as a good thing, some a bad thing.

There were reports even before training (He didn't go to OTA's last year) that he was near 400 pounds :character42:

It would be a tough call. The Panthers are a 4-3 defense and you want to make him a NT ?

I guess if I had a choice between him or Rogers I would probably wait and see what the Panthers do. There have been alot of talk of him just getting his outright release and considering what the Panthers have done so far in the off season (Cutting Dan Morgan, DeShaun Foster, Wahle, and now Carr)

it wouldn't suprise me if the cut Jenkins as well.

They are doing a housecleaning here.

I have a right to be a fan of any player as i wish. Jenkins is no bum. He has injury problems but when he is healthy he is a force to be wreckin with. You know that and the rest of any football fan would know that.

I rather have a Jenkins *cheaper and no attuide problem* then Rogers. But Jets allways set goals for themself to get a player and never do thats why i said it will be dispointing if we do not get Rogers from the Lions. I dont mind any DT we get as long as it helps this poor ass RUN DEFENSE who cares anymore

Carolina Dom, Carolina. Carolina has faired no better than the Jets in recent years.

As for Jenkins or Rogers, I'd personally rather have Jenkins, but I never thought he was a possibility.

Interesting read at the bottom that if Roberston restructures they could move him to Defensive End. If thats the case, and if they're interested in 6'6, 300lb Tommy Kelly, could the release of Shaun Ellis be coming soon? He's obviously undersized for the 34, even though he isn't terrible, but if the Jets can add bulkier players to their line, the end of Ellis could be near.

Ha. Sorry, I always lump those expansion teams with the teams they came in with.

I see no reason whatsoever for DRob to restructure. The Jets would want to restructure him to lower his cap figure, but he won't take less money because other teams are willing to trade for him which means his current deal is his minimum value. I just don't see it being worthwhile to keep the guy on because it would cost us more money in the long run and he'd still be playing out of position.

I agree 100% we need somebody at NT and wouldn't mind either guy. I was just saying it's a little confusing when you say you'd rather have Rogers in one breath and Jenkins in the other. Whatever bro, it's all good.
