Tom Rock of Newsday reports that the Jets have struck a deal with the Saints for linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Vilma will go to New Orleans, apparently for a conditional pick in the 2009 draft.

The conditional nature of the selection suggests that there are lingering concerns about Vilma's knee.

are you kidding me?

wasn't this reported a few hours ago?

talks were, but for a 09 pick/? we give up a guy that will flourish in the right system for a pick in 2009? the draft class might not even be that good. and what if vilmas knee explodes ? we get a 6th rounder to spend on a kicker to replace nugent...

Conditional isn't necessarily a bad thing. It could simply mean 2nd round pick unless he plays a certain percentage, and then it's a 1st rounder. Of course the rounds could be lower. I just don't see them being too low though. Anything below a guaranteed 3rd rounder and it's just stupid to trade him. I think it's gotta be a guaranteed 2nd at least, with the possibility of a 1st.

mangini must be really arrogant to think he'll be here in 2009....

pats screwed us again indirectly.

How is this bad?? it gives us the opportunity to get a second rounder. If you're so in love with vilma and feel he is worth a 2nd or more and will be a probowler, than you should rather get a 2nd next year as opposed to a 3rd this year.

what ever happened to a bidding war? det denver saints all wanted him it seemed. and shanny is known for talking big gambles. were they that desperate to get rid of him? BS i say. inexperiance at his finest

ill tell ya we shouldve threw the bank at parcells to get him up here. his touch is finally gone and now we have turned into the pumpkin at 12 midnight

Seriously though, what is so wrong about this transaction?? You feel he is worth more than a 3rd but you have to have the pick this year?? If you feel he is so talented that a 3rd isn't good enough you should be happy about this, he has the ability to earn us a higher pick through his play. Or are you just so impatient that thats the reason ur upset.

Maybe there was a bidding war and this is the highest anyone offered?? Did you ever think to yourself that he just flat out isn't worth a first rounder??

It's VILMA!

And every team is concerned with his knee still. Get over it. He is not going to be a jet, and if he was that would be the worst case scenario. You said urself a 3rd isn't enough right?? So isn't the potential of getting a 2nd in 09 better than just a 3rd this year? It doesn't add up on the value chart, but if we can get a 2nd next year that'll be ok. It's not even 100% that's what happened either.

Exactly. They aren't going to get much more than a 3rd for him right now. Why not see if they can get a 2nd, or maybe even a first? Seems like a no-lose situation to me.

Well it's clear that teams recognize his talent but they are concerned over his knee. It seems like the Jets wouldn't get anything higher than a 3rd rounder for him so they took a chance that he would play well for the Saints and they could get a 2nd or even a 1st.

And this way the Saints also cover their asses so if he is still affected by the injury they didn't get screwed over on the trade.

I wish they'd at lease friggin tell us what the "conditions" are. Everybody's thinking 3rd or 2nd or possibly a 1st. What if it's a 7th round choice and possibly 6th if he makes the Saints roster? All you guys happy then ? I sure as hell wouldn't be.

I'd like to see some confirmation on what the conditional pick can be. If it's possible we could get the Saints' first rounder in 2009, then it's a good deal. If not, I do not like the idea of not getting a 2008 draft pick at all.

Hello, we are NOT going to be getting the Saints 1st rounder in 09 so get that notion out of your head. I think the Tangini's aren't saying exactly what the "conditions" are because they're afraid of getting shot before the nights over. :P

With his injury and lackluster play, which may or may not be attributable to the 3-4, Vilma is JAG. If he plays great with the Saints, we benefit with a high draft pick. If he turns out to be damaged goods or just a POS, we get fair market value. To the stronzos who think he is worth a #1... don't bogart that joint my friend. Get a grip on reality guys.

***12-31-07 "Week 17 report card" thread:***

I'm goin' stictly for back-pats here:

(I posted this before the new year.)

Vilma:

He's a proven stud in the 4-3, with a team bent on playing the 34--his knee is the only thing really impacting his trade value.

For that reason,

I think we'll see a conditional draft pick for next year ('09), based on health and playing time; which I don't mind. We're already getting an extra 4th for Kendall; lets start the stock-pile.

I could see a 2nd rounder ('09) if he comes back strong and plays 80% of the games, and a 3rd rounder ('09) if he doesn't.

Still better than nothing, and protects both team's involved.

mangini came from the pats ....

on another note

all the defensive guys we are pawning off are for the 43 why not just scrap mangini's d and go with the system that suits our personel? would save money and headaches

Yes, let's scrap our entire defensive theory for a MLB coming off major knee surgery that was not worth more than a third. Of course if we go back to the 4-3 we'd probably have to scrap Harris, but that'd be okay.
