SteveNap
All week long the trade rumor for Vilma was realistically expected to be a 3rd rounder, so I do not know what people were expecting. What would you give to a team for a linebacker rehabbing from season ending surgery who playing in the wrong system? If a team knows we are desperate to ship someone out, why would they give away a high pick? We needed him out more than anyone needed him in. So instead of getting nothing we get what surely will be a third round pick. The fact that it is in 2009 is actually a positive. Now I know we are looking at only 3 picks in the first 5 rounds this year (Robertson trade pending) but I think we can all agree that the Jenkins trade was much needed. The bigger picture is that the 2009 draft is shaping up to be a very intriguing one for us. I pretty much see it as the real opportunity to build a championship caliber team. Its not as big as the 2000 draft of course, but it is pretty significant. Due to the Kendall and Vilma trades we are looking at the more realistic scenario of two 3rd rounders and two 4th rounders or one 3rd rounder and three 4th rounders. Regardless we will have 7 picks in the first 5 rounds. Quite a turnaround from 2008. Another note: So far, Tangini's track record on moving draft picks for higher talent level has been very good (Revis, Harris, and jury is still out on Clemens) so we can not totally rip them apart for trading picks away. There's just a good possibility that the Raiders might take him unless they take look at Julius Jones or Michael Turner. McFadden will be a beast back here. I won't mind Matt Ryan neither, but I'm starting to think we need to build on our defense.
