Jetlag
http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/blog/ Ok, here's the deal on the Vilma trade. Stay with me because this gets a little twisty. The Jets received a fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2008 draft. That's theirs and they will use it or trade it or whatever they want to do with it in two months. If Darren McFadden is around in the fourth round, he'll be a Jet. Now, if Vilma reaches certain playing time levels AND he winds up signing an extension with the Saints (remember, Vilma didn't renegotiate so he's a free agent after the 08 season), then the Jets will get either a second or a third rounder in 2009 but they would have to sort of pay back the original value of the deal by giving the Saints a fourth-round pick. Follow? So the best case for the Jets is that they wind up with a fourth this year, a second next year, but have to give up a fourth in 2009. It's been a long day. Are you happier now?? Many of you are worse then teenage girls.

Sperm Edwards
http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/blog/ Are you happier now?? Many of you are worse then teenage girls. So a 4th and if he merely signs an extension (NOT dependent upon his play in '08), then we also get an upgrade from round 4 to round 2 next year. Basically we got the value of a 4th rounder in '08 AND a low 2nd/high 3rd rounder in '09 (depending on where both we and NO pick in '09, but the value of a mid-3rd at worst). Pretty sweet for a guy who no one wanted and who sucked for us so badly for 2 years straight that we actually got better when he was injured. If the conditional pick kicks in next year, the jets have to forfeit their own 4th round pick then, if I understand correctly. That would bring this trade to being somewhat relative to the conditional 2nd or 3rd round next year. They just got more creative on it, not knowing the Saints interest in retaining and ultimately signing Vilma. A nice workaround.

I wanted at least a third this year but this helps New Orleans at the same time we get a flyer (fourth round pick) no matter what else happens. We can now root for Vilma to play well and for the Saints to resign him. Like you say...SWEET!
CrazyCarl40
Hmm. pretty sure I asked about a guarenteed pick this season. I told you all just to wait to pass judgment. Nice deal.

BReal32
i'm glad somebody got to the bottom of this. i just saw tannenbaum on SNY and he mentioned the pick this year, but didn't really say too much about it. i actually didn't mind this deal before we knew all this. What keeps coming back to me is the fact that the Lions had Vilma in for a physical -usually a sign that the team is ready to sign/trade for him. The fact that the Saints then trade for him (with a conditional pick essentially) without a peep from the Lions tells me the knee is much more serious than is being reported. Why would the Lions all of the sudden drop out of the picture? I'm starting to think that Tanny is the thief on this one. At any rate, there is zero chance that we could resign Vilma after next season and get no compensation for him. How anyone can complain that we get at worst a 4th rounder for damaged goods given the fact he's gone anyway after next season is beyond me. Arsis
This kid must be 10, damn I forgot what it was like to try to have a debate in the 6th grade. Thank you for reminding me. I bet he is going to follow up the small penis joke with calling someone a boogerface or a poophead. I'm on the edge of my proverbial seat waiting to see which one he chooses. Im on the edge of getting banned and bringing you back to reality. My education is being called into question? I have a B.A. in Forensic Psychology; if you must know. I also graduated with a 3.58 GPA, if you were curious about that. You do seem like a poster on the edge of getting banned, but that is just an observation from someone who has seen plenty of posters crash and burn. I am curious as to who exactly is out of touch with reality. I'm always open to information that is contrary to a personal belief that I hold. I love being proved wrong and learning something new. My inner-self? I don't believe in that crap. I'm also not gloating, you asked about my education and I answered it in a very friendly manner. I'm still asking what do you think I said wrong about football that you have to start throwing around the poorly worded juvenile insults. Also what realm are we talking about here, just so we're on the same page. I'm not quite sure which realm we are discussing here. Vilma was an over-rated over-hyped 220lbs noodle-knee who got swatted around like a fly out there on the football field. He was small for the 4-3, he had absolutely no reason to even step foot in a 3-4 defense. He also has a degenerative knee condition and lost a chunk of his patella. How high do you expect his trade value to be, just because he got a bunch of sacks on runningbacks that are 7-8-9-10-11-22 yards past the line of scrimmage.
