Sperm Edwards
Are they nuts? His cap # in 2008 was going to be about $600K. What's the matter with them? Did they seriously expect competition for his services, or difficulty in getting him signed, if they offered him a 2 year / $5.4M deal a year from now? This is just unbelievably stupid. We'd better not come in with the second-highest bid by $1M/yr for someone good who would actually start for us.
RSJ
I know what you are saying and you are right. But maybe they think he will reach a new high this year making it more expensive to sign him next year. Time will tell.
124
Fine by me. Pouha played very well down the stretch and will be a great back-up, second option for Jenkins at the Nose.

I'd rather draft a backup in round 4 (now that we have 2 fourth rounders) than sign a scrub for $2M/yr. This is how teams create cap problems for themselves. You grossly overpay a bunch of these backup/situational type guys (Pouha, Bowens) and think it doesn't add up. Well it does.

Irish Jet
That's honestly ridiculous. Hopefully he can step up (doubtful). Mangini must have plans for him this season behind Jenkins.

124
That's honestly ridiculous. Hopefully he can step up (doubtful). Mangini must have plans for him this season behind Jenkins. He does. Mangini loves Pouha, and I can't blame him because so do I. He's a big body, a good fit as a 34 Nose Tackle and he did nothing but improve as the 2007 season went on. Jenkins won't be in there every play and when he needs a breather, Pouha is there. GOOD depth on the Defensive Line is a good thing. Not this crappy, old, hasbeen depth we've had the past few seasons.

I don't get it..... but that is why I am on a message board Nt directed solely at you so nothing personal here: Why do Jets fans refuse to acknowledge that the Kendall situation had nothing to do with his skill as a player or the million dollars. It was about Kendall's presence in the locker room, his clubhouse lawyering and whining and his being a malcontent. He is a cancer that was unceremoniously dumped from other teams for the exact same reason. It hurst us on the field, but I do not think the Jets FO regretted letting him go. Sperm Edwards
So we pay to keep one of our picks, and that's no good either C'mon dude, can't have it both ways Nah, it's not that. It's that he isn't a $2M/yr player and there were some players this year who are more than adequate to assume the role of backup NT. Worse still, he was already under contract this year for 1/4 of that amount. Were we really concerned that, after playing 2008 as a backup (yet again), that we would be outbid by someone else if we attempted to give him a 2 year / $5.5M contract? Look, I could be way off. He could be much better than I realize. But I have a hard time believing he wouldn't take $1M/yr b/c so many teams would be after him. He's been in the league 3 years, fully missed one of those 3 years, and in the other two couldn't elevate himself to earning more than 1 start even with a total misfit at NT in both 2005 and 2007. How is he now worth $2M/yr? Cory Williams was franchised & got $6M/yr. So if you overpay 6 players by $1M/yr like this, then you remove enough cap room to pay for a stud from the team. It's the only move they've made so far that I don't like, but it's not earth-shattering. I love what they've done otherwise.
JonEJet
Who are you to say he's not a $2m/player If Mangini thinks he is a keeper, then we have our NT tandem locked up for years I'm happy they are proactive with our own players

I would have waited at least until after the bulk of FA is overwith before throwing around millions to players who area already under contract & hardly in demand. What if Okam or Rubin slipped to our late 4th round pick this year? We'd pass on them b/c we already locked up Pouha. I don't see what the big rush is to do this before FA is a week old or before the draft either.
JonEJet
The thing about interior defensive lineman, is that it normally takes 3-5 years before they become effective clogging up the middle....fat wilfat being the exception Next year we may be looking at this deal as a heist...I like locking up guys with potential early, ie Rhodes (now i know Rhodes is a much more polished player)

SoFlaJets
what this and the Jenkins deal tell me is Dwayne Robertson's days as a NT are done with the Jets-maybe he'll be moved to DE IF he takes a pay cut or hopefully gets traded for more picks
flgreen
Fine by me. Pouha played very well down the stretch and will be a great back-up, second option for Jenkins at the Nose. We are clearly in the minority, but I agree 100% The guy out played D-Rob at the end of last season. I believe that he is going to play very well platooning with Jenkins. They are both real BIG boys, and need to take breathers if they are going to play at a high level. Yes, I believe they might have had trouble resigning him next season. I like the deal. I want the Jets to use the franchise tag on Rhodes and NOT give him a new deal until we HAVE to-franchised players perform with a chip on their shoulders and are always trying to PROVE their worth-this year's money MUST be used to address the gaping holes we saw last year. I'm glad they have done what they've done so far but we still need a veteran LBer or two and a RT

That's what I was saying. Or at LEAST wait until AFTER the draft before you give a backup player $2M/year. What was the damn rush to do this? If we outright cut Pouha, people would have been less surprised than giving him a $2M/yr extension.
