Favorite_Toon
WOODY GETS WOODY And so it continues for the New York Jets. The team owned by Woody Johnson has signed Lions free-agent tackle Damien Woody to a five-year, $25.5 million contract, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network. Per Schefter, Woody will receive $11 million in guaranteed money. One league source expressed to us in the wake of the signings of Woody, Calvin Pace, and Alan Faneca and the trade and new contract for defensive tackle Kris Jenkins that these moves smack of desperation by a coaching staff and a front office that fear a rash of pink slips if the green and white don't win a lot of games in 2008. CrazyCarl40
I have said that before. If you believe that a coaching staff gets 3 or 4 years to make good, then they HAD to do something to right the ship. Will all of these work out? Hopefully. And another league source could say this smacks of a staff fixing two horrible lines while ADDING draft picks in the process.

GimmeShelter
I think they are all good moves...and its a great day for us jet fans... OFFENSE in this years draft... Yeah let's hope we add a gamebreaker somewhere. It'd be nice if we could be confident in our QB position as well. We have fixed a lot of holes but from a fans perspective I don't think any of us feel strongly that our QB's are the answer.
MasonJet
It also smacks of greatly improving the team when we have a lot cap room to work with. But it's much sexier to say it's done out of desperation.
Sperm Edwards
Or this is just the necessary ice-breaker to the PSL's & they're planning on announcing them this spring/summer before the 2008 Jets have a chance to lose a game. It could have come as much from Woody as from Tannenbaum/Mangini.

You can spin this anyway you want, but every NFL regime has to compete. No one has job security in the NFL. They won't be around very long sitting on their hands. The opportunities were there now so they took them. Most teams are desperate to get better and those that are not are the perennial losers. I give Tannenbaum a lot of credit for signing every player so far that's been targeted. I think the market has pretty much determined the payouts and the Jets haven't really overpaid, with maybe the exception of Pace. No doubt this team still needs to fill a few more spots on defense at CB and FS and pick up a playmaker on offense, but the message being sent is clear... Ranger
I believe Tangini started their reign by attempting to build through the draft and not overpaying FA's. However, I don't think they ever thought about a possible 4-12 season and having so many holes when they first started. Now realizing that if they want to continue their jobs, they have to go out and quickly get the team up to speed. I personally don't like the Woody pick and am in a wait and see approach with Pace, but they are attempting. I don't think the jets will pull this type of FA spending spree anymore in the near future. Here's to the FA pick ups earning their pay
