They aren't getting him in 1997. At best, he's good for 5-6 innings; will go to deep counts on everyone(which in Mel Stottelmyre's "no strikeout" nibbling world makes him fit right in!) and will pitch to a 4+ ERA on his best days. But he has to be better than the defrocked Padres, Redding and May. It reeks of desperation, but they really have no choice.

why not go all out and get Burnett?

Think about it.

Why should the Marlins trade him right now? They're still in the race and he's an important horse in their rotation.

They dont need to trade him, so they hold the upperhand in all negotiations with potential trades for him.

That and he'd cost way too much for a guy who also has arm issues.

Cost too much? Since when have Yankee fans or the Yankee organization ever used those 3 words?

When discussing the possibility of signing an above average OF to one of the biggest deals in baseball this past off-season (Beltran)

And oh how much do Yankee fans wish they had Beltran's defensive capabilities now over Bernie Williams and that 19-year old fatass Cabrera. Not only that, but Beltran in Yankee Stadium > Carlos Beltran in Shea Stadium as a hitter as well.
