What scouts are saying

"He plays too deep and yet his first step is always back," said a scout speaking before last night's game. "On offense he is just feeling for the ball rather than swinging. I don't know if he is a prospect or not, but I think every week he spends here with the Yankees retards his development by a month."

How can a team with a $205 million payroll and all of the Yankees' financial resources have to turn to someone so unprepared? How can they have been unable to find a one-tool player, someone capable of being a latter-day Gary Pettis? That is all that is needed with the rest of the Yankee offense so strong.

The theory was that Cabrera was that guy, but I have yet to speak to another team that thought Cabrera even projected to be a major league center fielder down the road, much less after a rush promotion to the majors after nine games at Triple-A. The Yanks knew this was an area of need after obtaining Kenny Lofton two offseasons ago, and yet did not address it last offseason. That is a fireable offense.

No idea why we called up Melky so quickly. I said at the time I didn't think he was ready, and I was just hoping for the best when we called him up. I thought he was rushed when he was called up to AAA and was rushed more when he was called up to the majors. I was hoping he could continue some of his hot hitting and field pretty well. He has done nothing like that.
