Bugg
It gets better. FDR and LBJ promised SSI checks to retirees would never be taxed. Clinton decided otherwise, with Al Gore casting the deciding vote when the Senate deadlocked 50-50. SSI taxes right now are capped after your make $97,500(if you HAve a 2nd job, you get credit for excess SSI taxes). Obama wishes to lift that cap. Even Hillary recognizes that's crazy. Add in AMT, and there's almost disincentive to work after $100K. IN the Ny/NJ Metro area, $125K for a couple with a house and kids isn't rich. So when you hear alll these lovely things everyone wants to do, ask yourself-who's paying for it?I don't know who the rich is they keep yapping about. And socialized medicine-all that great care they get in Europe and Canada such that Manhattan oncology and cardiology wards look like German/English/Irish/Canadian get together(sorry to say that my family has had need of these things). That's really what we need-3 month waits for cancer tests and then another 12 months until surgery,as my wife's uncle in Liverpool had to deal with. Or breast cancer screening facilities being run by private charities as I saw in Ireland, because the government facilities have 18-month waits for breast cancer screenings. Yes, a government-run DMV-like health care bureaucracy sure seems like a great idea. Nothing could be more fun than DMV and the doctor's office combined (and I happen to like my doctor, who's son had a rather nasty experience with Eric Barton at Maryland, but I digress). POP-SQUEAL! Think of Ned Beatty in "Deliverance". And we're now told we should extend those benefits, Medicare, health care and every other conceivable benefit to people who showed up yesterday illegally. That is pretty much the position of all 3 major candidates left. GREAT! This isn't political; they are all $2 whores. If anyone under 45 expects to cash an SSI check, I suggest you start funding your IRA (Roth if you don't have a pension plan) yesterday, and max out your deferred comp and 401k plans at work. DO IT NOW.
bitonti
the war in Iraq could have funded SSI for the next 50 years.

Bugg
the war in Iraq could have funded SSI for the next 50 years.I don't know about the length of time(SSI being a huge, underfunded government program), but your central premise is fundamentally correct. But then the "Iraqis yearning to breathe free" would be s__ out of luck.
