Sixteen teams will compete in this new postseason event, hosted at on-campus arenas throughout the country. The CBI will provide a meaningful opportunity for teams that are deserving of a postseason experience.

The College Basketball Invitational will be a single-elimination tournament, up until the Championship Series, with all games being played at campus sites. The Championship Series will be a best of three series, home-away-home, in which the higher seed will get the first and last (if necessary) home games.

The event will feature eight first-round games, four second-round games, a semifinal round and then a Championship Series

The opening round of the event will take place March 18 and 19

The winner of each opening round game will advance to the round of eight on March 24

The semifinals will be held on March 26

The Championship Series will take place on March 31, April 2 and April 4.

Bracketing will be done geographically into four regions of the country (East, West, South, Midwest) to minimize missed class time. Brackets will be balanced competitively within each region. The process will take place after the NCAA Tournament field is announced.

The 16-team field will consist of teams that are not selected for the NCAA Tournament. Teams will be invited based upon their performance during their conference and non-conference schedule, as well as how well the team is playing at the end of the regular season.

Last March, a 26-win team, a 25-win team and several traditional powers with winning records were left out of the postseason.

That's how much the landscape of college basketball has changed. Gone are the days when 20 wins or a .500 record in a high-major conference guaranteed a team a spot in a tournament.

With 341 teams in Division I, there's more competition than ever for coveted spots in the postseason.

This year, there's new hope for teams like Akron (26-7 last season) and Vermont (25-7)

another articleThe College Basketball Invitational, a 16-team tournament operated by the Gazelle Group, is in its first year. The CBI, which gets underway Tuesday, provides certain teams another postseason option.

Dan Loney of the Gazelle Group cited last year's Akron team as a good example of the type of team that would interest the CBI. The Zips had an RPI of 67 last year and lost at the buzzer in the finals of the Mid-American Championship, yet never received a call from the NIT.

While the NIT takes all gate receipts into a pool to distribute after the tournament, Loney said the CBI will split gate receipts 50/50 with host teams. The CBI's share must be at least $60,000. The higher seed teams will play host.

"We're still in a process of figuring out who might be interested," Loney said. "Some teams might want to host games, others may not be able to host because of prior commitments."

Loney said Gazelle Group president Rick Giles has repeatedly said that the CBI will look for interesting matchups between teams who finished near the top of their conference standings and played well over the last month of the season. RPI will be less important.

According to a Cincinnati Enquirer story, the CBI and the NIT both sent out binding agreements asking teams to play in their tournament if selected. UNCW has not yet heard from either tournament.

Here's a story on UNCW's slim postseason chances from Tuesday's Star-News.

So according to this, the CBI will make $60,000 and once they reach that plateau, they will split the revenue with the host teams....

sounds like a money making scam to me. Id rather play in the NIT if I had a choice.

UH lands spot in new basketball tourney

By MICHAEL MURPHY

Coach Tom Penders’ Houston Cougars didn’t land the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1992, but they found out Saturday that they will indeed be playing in the postseason.

The Cougars instead will play in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament, against an unnamed opponent.

"Tom and the players indicated to me that they were anxious to play another game, and I fully support them in this," said University of Houston athletics director Dave Maggard. "We have accepted an invitation to play in the CBI, and I’ve been told (by the organizers) that we will play a name opponent."

The CBI, organized by the Gazelle Group, is the same company that produces the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic (which benefits the Coaches vs. Cancer). Opening-round games will be played Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Cougars will open the tournament on the road, with host teams playing on their home courts. The 16-team tournament will feature a single-elimination format through the first two rounds and semifinals, but the championship will decided by a best-of-three series, with the higher-seeded team hosting the first game and, if necessary, the third.

"Given the choice between the two (the CBI and the NIT), I would much prefer the CBI," Penders said. "They are trying to get the best field they can possibly get, and they’ll get their field filled before the NIT does.

"It’s an honor that they (the tournament organizers) thought that highly of us. It does take the mystery out of (Selection) Sunday, though."

Led by senior guard Robert McKiver, the Cougars finished the season 22-9, losing 80-77 to UTEP Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament.

"I’m excited," Penders said. "This is something a little different, something that’s cutting edge."

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Sean Singletary's career at Virginia isn't over.

The school announced Saturday that it has already accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational if it does not get a bid to the NIT.

The CBI is a new tournament that will involve 16 teams. It will be staged by The Gazelle Group, which is based in Princeton, N.J., and runs the 2K Sports College Hoop Classic that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer and the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.

The NCAA invites 65 teams to its tournament and the National Invitation Tournament, which started in 1938, selects 32. The NIT reduced its field last season from 40.

The CBI intends to compete with the NIT for teams that did not make the NCAA's field of 65, but Virginia said it will give preference to the established tourney.

The Cavaliers (15-15) lost to Georgia Tech in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament this week despite the presence of Singletary. The point guard this month became the third Virginia player selected to the All-ACC team three times.

Ralph Sampson and Bryant Stith are the others.

If Virginia winds up in the CBI, it will play a home game Tuesday night.

The fields for all three postseason tournaments will be announced Sunday.

The Bradley Braves were playing a waiting game Saturday after putting their postseason fate in the hands of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational.

Bradley (17-15) has signed an exclusivity commitment with the CBI agreeing BU would accept only a postseason invitation from the 16-team tournament.

The CBI field will be announced tonight after the NCAA Selection Show on CBS-TV.

"Since Creighton and Southern Illinois finished above us (in the Missouri Valley Conference), we had to assess the chances of us getting a third team in the NIT, which now has a truncated field," BU athletics director Ken Kavanagh said. "Plus the lowest at-large RPI for the NIT last year was 88 (Bradley ranks around 100 currently). We'd love to go to the NIT, but we couldn't sign two contracts."

Kavanagh said he was comfortable with the CBI because director Rick Giles experience operating in-season tournaments.

"He's trying to get an assessment of who's willing to host and who's willing to play," Kavanagh said.

Bradley has submitted a first-round hosting date of Wednesday and a second-round date of Monday, March 24.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For U.Va., the season is not over.

The Cavaliers (15-15) have accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational if, as expected, they're not selected for the NIT. They would host a first-round CBI game Tuesday, probably at 7 p.m., at John Paul Jones Arena.

The 32-team NIT field will be announced tonight after the NCAA tournament pairings are revealed. The 16-team CBI's pairings also will be announced tonight.

Virginia lost to Georgia Tech in the ACC tournament's first round Thursday night. After receiving assurances from third-year coach Dave Leitao that the CBI interested him, U.Va. decided "to pursue options that would allow our student-athletes the opportunity to keep playing," Jon Oliver, the school's executive associate athletic director, said in a release last night.

"Our efforts the last two days were focused on understanding the logistics of the new tournament and keeping all of our options open."

If Virginia lands in the CBI, tickets for Tuesday's game will cost $10, and U.Va. students can get in for $5. Parking will cost $5. -- Jeff White

The Ohio men's basketball team will be one of 16 teams in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational, coach Tim O'Shea told The Post.

O'Shea said he was unsure who the Bobcats would play or if the team will serve as a host site for the tournament, which kicks off Tuesday. He said he expects to find out more details later tonight.
