Sox, Devil Rays set to renew hostilities

By Jeff Horrigan

Monday, July 18, 2005

Just because the archrival New York Yankees have left town doesn't mean the animosity at Fenway Park has eased up.

When the Tampa Bay Devil Rays open a three-game series against the Red Sox tonight, it will mark the first time the teams have played since they scuffled at Tropicana Field on April 24. That incident resulted in a series of suspensions and an exchange of angry accusations by Curt Schilling and Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella.

Benches emptied twice during the seventh inning of an 11-3 Sox win. The first fracas came after Tampa Bay reliever Lance Carter threw a pitch at David Ortiz' head immediately after Manny Ramirez belted a long home run.

Sox starter Bronson Arroyo, who hit Aubrey Huff earlier in the game, retaliated in the bottom of the seventh by plunking Chris Singleton in the right knee. Arroyo, Carter, Piniella, Terry Francona, Trot Nixon and Dewon Brazelton were ejected from the game and later suspended.

Schilling escalated the tension two days later by making comments on WEEI claiming a Devil Rays player told him during the scuffles: ``This is why we lose 100 games a year, because this idiot (Piniella) makes us do stuff like this.''

Schilling also said Piniella was ``a manager who somehow forgot how the game is played.''

Piniella hit the roof and called a team meeting to ask if anyone made the ``idiot'' statement and reached a conclusion that no player said anything. The volatile manager then issued a testy statement to fire back at Schilling, saying:

``Forget how the game is played? I have forgotten more about baseball than this guy knows. He talks about making our players tough guys. Well, we do that quite well here, but we don't do it by advocating fighting or throwing at opposing hitters.

``The problem is, Curt has a short memory. He doesn't remember when he was a young pitcher. We have a lot of young pitchers here, and they're trying to learn to pitch at a big league level. . . . Nobody here wants anyone hit, believe me.

``On the idiot subject, I'm appalled he would actually say something like that. I had a meeting with my team and, to a man, they denied it. He's questioning my character and integrity, and that is wrong. He's never played for me, never really spoken to me, so he really doesn't know what I stand for or don't stand for. If I were Curt, I would be really embarrassed at the cheap shot he took. . . . I'll tell you, I've always admired his pitching ability and competitiveness, but I can honestly tell you I've lost a lot of respect for him.''

Piniella later phoned Schilling to express his displeasure.

Watch your back, Red Sox ... with Pinella this usually means bean-ball wars!:mrgreen:

The Red Sox were exposed this weekend imo. There top 6 guys in the lineup are solid...but after that, yikes.

Mark Bellhorn is one of the worst hitters in baseball. Millar is a waste. Bill Mueller is the definition of average.

Nixon's good for a big hit once in a while.

There pitching is no where near as good as it was last year.

Go Drays

Well if the Red Sox have been "exposed" as frauds, then the Yankees can't be anything more than that, either. After all, the Yankees have been owned by the Devil Rays, Brewers, and Royals this season.

Different team ... that team was a bunch of under-achieving clowns who looked listless and lifeless

Over the past two months this team has been scratching and clawing for every inch ... fighting until the last dog dies ... and an occasional disheartening loss doesn't send them directly into a funk as it did earlier in the season

Totally different team, as the Red Sox can attest too

Kazmir, IMO, has a great chance to end Damons hitting streak tonight. Kazmir has nasty nasty stuff, and I'd like to see him plunk big ugli or womanny ramirez right in the face.

Unless Kazmir goes the distance, Damon should extend his streak. After all, the TB bullpen is probably the most pathetic in the game. Well, that's actually not true. They don't even have the worst pen in their own division, as it stands.

he doesn't need to go the distance, he just needs to get Baez the ball. he is a pretty good closer, it's the rest of the pen that is a disaster

Ham - the thing to keep in mind is that the players in Tampa don't especially like piniella, especially after showing up the pitching staff w/his relief pitchers to start comments. they also don't like the red sox which should make for interesting theater.

the one thing the rays can do is hit and the sox staff isn't exactly dominating right now. look for a couple of 10-7 games.

I wish we could trade for Kazmir

I know he hasnt done well, but if theres ever such a player, "in a matter of time", its Kazmir.

He's thrown some great games this year, and most of the games he's beem knocked around alittle bit was because he made just a few bad pitches on some 2 strike counts.

Yeah but I guess I'd rather beat better teams. We've just won series against the Orioles, Indians, and Red Sox recently which is good by me. When we played those teams, we would have lost to anybody cuz the Yanks were just horrible during that stretch. Now we're back to being good and opposing pitchers better watch out.
