drago
my mom was involved in it when i was in middle school. We had two girls that were in 2nd and 5th grade, they were good kids but you could tell had some awful home experiences. I haven't seen them since the year or two my mom put into the program, so i can't say how well it benefited them.

war ensemble
How is helping underprivileged youths the worst thing ever? He is confusing it with the television reality show Big Brother. He's in Ireland so, as far as I know, he doesn't have a Big Brother/Big Sister so he wouldn't understand where you're going with this. I'm sure he didn't mean it that way if he knew what you were talking about. I've never gone through one of these things, near me they have little "houses" where you can drop off old clothes, so everything I get that either does not fit or is old goes there. war ensemble
lmao you just called a good thing the worst thing ever OWNED Hey dickhead he doesn't have it over there so why would he know it? Besides, he said Big Brother is the worst thing ever, while this is Big Brother/Big Sister. And you personally would know which Big Brother he's talking about. So, no, he didn't get owned. Nice try though. P.S. Sorry man for posting this in your thread.

DHJF
Recently I've felt like participating in something like this would be a great experience. So I was wondering if anyone here has been involved and how did the total experience shape up. Any input that you could add would really be appreciated. If you're looking for a serious answer, I had a BB from roughly 1976 through 1977 after my dad passed away. (I was 7yrs old) Personally, I think this is an excellent program for fatherless/motherless children. Just having the comraderie of a "father figure" (he was a father figure to me, not a big brother type) to take you fishing or get ice cream, or just to talk cannot be understated. It's my belief that these types of programs keep kids out of trouble far more effectively than other things like Church or the YMCA. There are questions that a young boy has that are difficult to ask a mom, or difficult for a mom to answer if asked. My mom is wonderful, but young boys need information and answers from men. I lost touch with my BB shortly after we moved away, but I still think of him from time to time. So I guess you could say the program was a success for me. This is great info thank you very much for sharing. I have a few questions. How old was your BB? How often did you meet up? Was it difficult after the year was up? JerryK
I haven't been involved, but I'll tell you about something I saw years ago. I just got out of the Navy and was happily/proudly at Lansing Community College for day one of my college experience. Prior to registering for classes, they sat us down in an auditorium for a "college how-to" session. 2 seats to my left was a kid from my High School, a year younger. I didn't know him well, but I was happy to see him there. The thing is, I think he had a single mom and my uncle was his "big brother" for about 2 yrs in 5th-7th grade. I can't say that Big Brothers (or my Uncle) was the influence that focused him to enter college after high school. But he's one kid in the program who came out ok. If you have the time, and the desire...do it!
Jet Moses
Right now I'm still trying to finish up school so I might not do it for a little while but there's something in me saying I should do this. It's really not a difficult obligation, I think it's only one weekend a month for two years. If you can do it, do it. It will be a rewarding experience for both of you. I'm thinking about volunteering to teach English to new immigrants.

Green DNA
I'm thinking about volunteering to teach English to new immigrants. I already do that. The immigrants are well versed in "Don't cut the damn lawn too short this time" and "Make sure you blow the leaves back onto my neighbors property"
