Jets and Laveranues Coles closing in on new contract

The Jets are negotiating a new contract for wide receiver Laveranues Coles and, barring complications, it should be finalized by Friday, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Coles' decision to report to the off-season conditioning program Monday, after skipping the first week to protest his current contract, was a strong indication that the two sides were moving toward an agreement.

Coles has two years, $11 million remaining on his current deal, and he's looking for a long-term extension. He was prepared to miss the entire offseason program, not showing up until training camp, unless he received a new contract.

The Jets took the unusual step of offering to guarantee the $11 million, a proposal initially rejected by Coles. After playing hardball last year with Pete Kendall, resulting in an ugly contract dispute that ended with Kendall's trade to the Redskins, the Jets took a flexible approach with Coles.

I never thought I'd say this...I really don't know how I feel about Coles having a spot on this team still. Honestly, trade picks would have substituted just fine for me

The FO felt the man was an important player for this team

I trust the FO

I'd hate to have us regretting NOT having a reliable WR-same way we ALL wished we had Kendall last year after seeing how friggin HORRIBLE Clarke was. Hey at least we got 2 guys lining up outside who can catch a friggin football

nobody better say ANYTHING about the scrubs behind them being adequate

Chansi will be good, and I like sSmith

But we need one more WR

Neither of those guys are Coles. He may bitch and complain, but the man plays hard out there every week. He was trying to play on one ankle for a team that went 4-12 at the end of the year. If we had another starter on the team, then you could trade him, but people are right, they learned from the Kendall fiasco.

How so?

Chad and Coles are borderline gay with each other (exaggeration but they're like best friends).

I've said all along that Mangini looks to be building a team to win right now, I can't see him handing the team over to an unproven KC. I'd love KC to beat Chad out in camp and prove he's the better QB but unfortunately I can't see it.

I think whoever wins the competition starts.

I don't like Smith ,since I'm not a big fan of radically changing a players college position, so I think we need 2 WR's though I'm hoping David Ball will surprize us this year.

All Chad "proved" last year was that he cannot get it done anymore. The FO does not lay out this kind of money for a dead arm with a new propensity for late 4th quarter INTs. I actually still think they release him or trade him. Maybe the mini camps will tell them that he is through.
