4HCrew
March 28, 2008 -- The Jets New York Jets , after spending some $140 million in free agent contracts this offseason on players who have never worn their uniform, yesterday took care of one of their most respected, hardest-working players. Laveranues Coles Laveranues Coles , who entered this offseason with two remaining years on his contract worth $11 million but wanted an extension to ensure he'd finish his career as a Jet, yesterday agreed to that extension. Terms of the deal were not immediately available, but it's believed Coles had either two or three years added to his contract. Coles earlier this offseason was critical of the Jets because he felt they were not going to honor his wish for an extension and he threatened to sit out the offseason conditioning program, which began last week. He didn't show up when the program began, a damaging blow considering his role as captain and one of the more popular players in the locker room. Initially the Jets offered to guarantee the remaining $11 million of his deal, but Coles said he was more concerned wth the long-term security. When the Jets let Coles know they would work something out, he appeared at the conditioning program on Monday. The extension allows the Jets to smartly avert the ugly public situation they allowed to fester and implode last year with left guard Pete Kendall, who was seeking $1 million added to his contract. The Jets steadfastly refused, ended up trading Kendall for a fourth-round pick and proceeded to struggle mightily on the offensive line all year - particularly at Kendall's position. Coles and Jerricho Cotchery Jerricho Cotchery , who was awarded a new contract before last season, are the lifeblood of the Jets receiving corps and the Jets could not afford to break that up. SayNoToDMC
He better be cutable after the first 2, and it better give us some protection from the strong possibility that he suffers a career ending injury. I can't belive they caved to this ****sucker, the 11 million guaranteed was more then fair. What was the point in playing hardball with Kendall to set an example just to cave to Coles a year later. Great job keeping him here! All the negative talk about Coles as a player are ignorant. The contract situation is one thing but as a player Coles has been an excellent Receiver. There is no one on the field who is tougher than him. Now they can add a real third WR and maybe this team can take off this year.

Max extension is 7 yrs for salary cap purposes... Or, I believe, 2 yrs beyond the end of the contact, which may make the max extension/contract now 6, but that part I'm not sure of. I know there is a provision based on the end of the contract but I forget how long

He's had a number of concussions, lots of injuries, and, quite frankly, is on the downside of his career. He's not a field-stretcher, he's a very good possession receiver. If you want to say it's good because it shows others that the Jets will take of them when their contracts are up, that's one thing. His performance and value are being over-compensated by this contract, in my opinion.

Secondly, the only reason Coles was never a field stretcher for the Jets is because Chad was his QB. As bad as Patrick Ramsey was, he had a hell of an arm and hit Coles for many big gains in WAS. It's no coincidence that Coles had his best season in WAS.

We all need to stop blaming Chad for everything that is wrong with this team. The simple fact is that a receiver like Coles doesn't make DCs lose any sleep fearing the deep strike. He's a great, tough possession receiver, but he is simply not a deep threat. His big plays come from YAC, not by running by someone. The same applies to Cotchery. When you have have 2 receivers like that as your main 2 guys, it allows everyone on the defense to play up and take away the running game. Until we get someone that can stretch the field, we are not going to be any type of efficient offense.
lawngnome o-line
ESPN is reporting something completely different. They are saying that INSTEAD of an extension he is just getting the remainder completely guaranteed. Rather than giving Coles extension, Jets guarantee rest of contract -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Pat Yasinskas ESPN.com The New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles' contract, a league source said Friday. Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver. Coles had been critical of the Jets earlier in the offseason for spending money on players from outside and not taking care of players already on the team. The Jets were one of the most active teams in the NFL's free agency period, signing left guard Alan Faneca, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, defensive end/linebacker Calvin Pace and right tackle Damien Woody to big-money deals. In total, the team doled out approximately $142 million for the four players -- $74 million of it guaranteed. Coles, 30, has been a team captain and is one of the most respected leaders in the Jets' locker room. He appeared in 12 games last season, catching 55 passes for 646 yards with six touchdowns. Coles caught 91 passes for 1,098 yards in 2006. Coles spent the first three years of his career with the Jets and returned to the team in 2005 after a two-year stint with Washington. The Jets are coming off a 4-12 season under second-year coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum. The team made the playoffs as a wild-card team in the first season of the new Jets regime. Pat Yaskinskas covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

124
Two or three years isn't bad, its what I expected actually. Now, lets see what the $ is and then we can decide if we're going to bitch & moan about it or be alright with it.
SayNoToDMC
You seriously believe that Coles - whatever his personal shortcomings - is more of a liability on offense than Chad is? It's to hard to choose, can't we just get rid of them both? I'm not happy about the guaranteeing of the final 2 years, but if that's true I could live with that. Anything that put's him on our books beyond that is stupid.
Sperm Edwards
It's to hard to choose, can't we just get rid of them both? We could have with Coles if we had drafted a real WR instead of wasting 2 years trying to convert Brad Smith.
NorthCoastJetsFan
You seriously believe that Coles - whatever his personal shortcomings - is more of a liability on offense than Chad is? That is not what I said (or meant). I'm not saying Chad is the man or anything close to it. I simply stated that he is not the only problem here. And Coles in, and of, himself is not the problem. He'd be great IF there was ANYONE else on the offense capable of drawing attention and double teams. When you have two possession receivers and no deep threats, the defense can collapse on the short passes and the running game. This will make any QB less effective. My gripe is not with Coles personally. It's more with the structure of the team and the talent that we acquire and don't use properly.

They both went to the pro bowl their first year away from Chad Pennington. And it's not like either moved to such a marvelous QB situation either. Coles went from Chad to Patrick Ramsey; Moss to Brunell/Campbell. Pennington hurts the WR production a lot more than the WR's hurt Pennington's production. I can't stand Coles, but I can still recognize that the guy is a more talented, more dangerous, and more reliable WR than Chad is at QB. Sure I'd love it if we had Braylon Edwards instead. About 30 other teams wish they had Braylon Edwards. Who were the available FA's? Randy Moss wasn't an option, no matter how much people complain about it. Who else? T.O? Fitzgerald? CJohnson? Wayne? These players are on other teams. You don't simply end up with one of them because you'd like an upgrade from Coles (which I also would like). If they were so easy to come by, everyone would have a tall, fast, stud WR on their team. With a solid OL giving the ground game some much-needed room to breathe, Coles & Cotchery are fine as starters. They could use a real burner to complement them for 3WR sets, but other than that the weak point is at QB, not receiver.
