Rather than giving Coles extension, Jets guarantee rest of contract

By Pat Yasinskas

ESPN.com

The New York Jets have guaranteed the $11 million remaining on the final two years of receiver Laveranues Coles' contract, a league source said Friday.

Coles had been seeking a contract extension, but guaranteeing the remaining two years is an apparent compromise between the team and the receiver. Coles had been critical of the Jets earlier in the offseason for spending money on players from outside and not taking care of players already on the team.

The Jets were one of the most active teams in the NFL's free agency period, signing left guard Alan Faneca, defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, defensive end/linebacker Calvin Pace and right tackle Damien Woody to big-money deals.

In total, the team doled out approximately $142 million for the four players -- $74 million of it guaranteed.

Coles, 30, has been a team captain and is one of the most respected leaders in the Jets' locker room. He appeared in 12 games last season, catching 55 passes for 646 yards with six touchdowns. Coles caught 91 passes for 1,098 yards in 2006.

Coles spent the first three years of his career with the Jets and returned to the team in 2005 after a two-year stint with Washington.

The Jets are coming off a 4-12 season under second-year coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum. The team made the playoffs as a wild-card team in the first season of the new Jets regime.

I thought they already did this? Gave him the two years upfront (11mil). This better not turn ugly!

No, this was offered to Coles but at first he turned it down. Supposedly he is now accepting it and the Jets can now cut him at anytime or possibly Coles is planning to seek a trade.

YES!!!

He can be released/traded next year if needed. If he wants out when that time comes, he'll release the Jets from their guarantee of the 2009 salary.

Now draft a WR to take over in '09 or '10.

too bad this isn't a receiver heavy draft. It looks more and more like our second rounder will go to a receive (too bad too, because we could realy shore up this O-line if we could use the pick on a tackle).

If only we could trade down from the sixth, or from our second rounder....

Not so fast. It is possible his salary was guaranteed by signing bonus of 9M or whatever 11M - (Minimum Salary * 2 ) is ....

Then you'd have to get him to pay BACK the signingbonus to get the cap space back.. yeah right.

COLES DEAL A GUARANTEE, NOT AN EXTENSION?

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 28, 2008, 11:59 a.m.

Although all reports indicate that wide receiver Laveranues Coles is no longer unhappy to be a Jet, there are now conflicting reports about what kind of deal the player and the team have reached to make Coles happy.

Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post reported early this morning that Coles agreed to an extension and had either two or three years added to his contract. Wrote Cannizzaro of the extension,

Why would they cut him if they just guarenteed his salary for two years? Bad precedent by the Jets. Now everyone will want guarenteed contracts.

Listen! If Sperm says it's a good deal, THEN IT"S A GOOD DEAL!! ok, back to the babbling.

so I am guessing he will play his a$$ off this year and then next year hold out or demand to be traded.

Fine with me. Gives us a year to draft someone & then he doesn't need to start as a rookie. If Coles wants out, he'll have to let the Jets out of the guaranteed $ for 2009; fair's fair.

While I'm not a fan of holdouts in general, it's at least tolerable or understandable when the guy is entering the last year of his deal (particularly if it's a rookie deal where the player's not being paid much yet). But when there's still a couple of years left, and he's been paid well and is still being paid well, then it falls on deaf ears to most fans. Particularly when it's a team captain calling the FO a bunch of lying scumbags in so many words.

Is it possible the Jets did this to make Coles agreeable to a trade? Now the team he goes to will not have to pay this jerk a signing bonus. They know what they are getting money wise.

Sorry, Irish Jet just Pmed me and said he liked the taste and didn't mind the eye stinging, it was just that he can never get it to wash properly out of his hair.

It's not the hair that's the issue, it's just that doesn't agree with my skin.
