I love how they say its possible. Its already hit me. I've been cut to a 4 day week (with the 20% reduction in pay of course).

Fortunately for me, we can get by on less without a problem, but I feel bad for some of my co-wokers. Anyone else been directly affected by the economy ?

Damn that is a new one to me. 4 day week. Interesting angle and funny way to cut back. Make you do the same amount of work in less time, with less pay!

Ben Barnanke is hilarious. "A recession is possible." Ofcourse it's possible, it's been happening for a while now. The real estate bubble burst hard, the dollar is garbage thanks to constantly cutting interest rates and taxes and the price of gas is going through the roof.

I cashed out my stocks and mutual funds over a year ago. I knew it was coming and I am very happy I cashed out when I did b/c the stock market is going down the toilet.

By the year 2012, after McCain's first term is over, the euro will be worth 3 dollars. You heard it here first.

Companies are biting off their noses in spite of their faces. These sort of measures - you know, lack of loyalty when they demand it from you - cutting your earnings, yet requiring the same amount of work.....basically trying to get you to leave so they don't have to pay you a severance...leads to nothing but an inferior quality of work and less productivity.

I gage a lot of the recession talk at the grocery store. Milk has doubled in 5 years, and other products seem to be in the same realm. I spoke with the owner of Badger Building (big wisconsin construction company) he is under the impression home building is the backbone of the US economy. I wanted to say 'bull ****' but him being a customer and all, it wouldn't be corgile (spell?).

Part of the reason for recession is building new buildings. How many new subdivisions can this earth hold? When the ghetto rats are spitting out kids to the tune of 10 per male, and women are having them as early as 14, there aren't enough people to fill the 'yuppy' houses. Everyone keeps moving farther and farther from each actual city, and with gas going up and the fact the most of the so called rich people in the US are only paper tigers when it comes to their bank accounts...the bottom, can, and will fall out.

To me, gasoline/oil is the backbone of the US economy. Until someones finds a new, or multiple new fuel sources the yuppy, so called high class citizens are going to burn. I can't wait to watch all their little trust fund babies burn with them.

wrong ! I love the firm I work for. They are doing this to save jobs. Believe me - I'm not working harder because there is hardly any work to do. They have been so good to me in the past and I'm more than happy to return the favor. This is actually not the first time this has happened to me. Back in the 80's when interest rates were up to 16 and 17%, we did the same thing then. Believe me, this post was not about bashing my law firm, it was just to show how bad things are getting out there. I know when things are good again, they will make it up to me.

We need to start getting into Ethanol E-85 fuel in a big way. Brazil is already doing it with the flex cars.

The Financial Services industry which I am in is going through tough times to say the least. Every firm including my own is downsizing.

Don't you feel we are to blame for a lot of this? I certainly do. I'll give two instances...

1.) i don't consider myself dishonest by any means, but when someone comes to me with a near 45% debt to income and they want to buy a boat, i don't talk them out of it. In the back of my head i'm thinking that person is a total fool, but how is it my job to explain finances to them? My old bank made it very clear that i am to hit my goals every month, and that's what i will do. If anything, i put the blame on the institutions

I get all the info i need and i give them their stupid loan. I should include in the loan documents an attorney's number for bankrupcy.

2.) my boss sold a bum mortgage (5 year ARM) for a rate that was actually higher than the 30 year fix they already had. He screwed over his own parents. How low can you be?

my dad told me california has Hydorgen stations. I was thinking the best method would be to have about 5 fuel sources that all had their own particular benefits. Bread competition, something our economy was supposed to be based on in the first place.

That not usually how it is, Mrs13 - don't mean to offend you.

Hey, I work for a law firm as well - but I'm not as giddy about it as you are! LOL!

Sorry to hear.

I am the opposite. I'm in construction and work for BIG OIL, and I'm averaging 50+ hours per week. Wanna trade?

I just took a pay reduction as well. The weird thing is that my Company had record sales last year but posted a loss. The reason? The falling US Dollar.

Although most of our customers are in the USA all of the billing is done in New Zealand. The Kiwi dollar, compared to the US dollar, was around 50 cents two years ago now it's around 78 cents.

The exchange rate is killing us.

Competition? In a capitalist country? Are you a socialist or something? Corp's should be allowed to merga and create as many unfair monopolies as possible to gouge us consumers into the poor house until - guess what - we can't buy their stuff anymore.

Sometime in the future E-85 is going to be our nation's primary source of fuel.

e85 is still mostly gasoline. there isnt a huge difference in it. ive been to brasil a few times, ask tem about how reliable it is

the reality is, every home should be green, efficient with solar panels and a windmill. electricity only used when reserves are low. im sure lots of people will laugh at this but there is a ton of free energy that can be harvested if you wanted to.

i have a solar panel on my boat. its tiny and cheap and guess what for the last 3 years every time i go the battery is fully charged and the radio cranks......

thing discussed ! He doesn't have to cut back on the golf as long as I don't have to give up my cleaning girl. I think that's fair !

He gets to play golf and watch a girl clean his house. Wow. Did Al happen to write a how to manual for the rest of us? He seems to have this all figured out, lol.

Yeah it has kicked my @ss for sure. Everyone knows of my exploits in the "adult world" but that is a new thing that I am growing, my rent is paid by my 9-5 business which is in import/wholesale. I deal with goods made in China and sell to small boutiques all over the country. On one hand you have prices going through the roof due to the shrinking dollar and oil, and on the other hand you have customers throughout the midwest who are strapped for cash because of the economy. It is really bad out there. I think a lot of the NYC-area people don't realize just how crappy it is out there.

Ehhh, chevy is putting a bunch of flex fuel cars on the road, but when is the last time you saw an ethenol station? MY brothers silverado pickup is flex fuel, but with the scarcity of fuel, and the lack of cost savings to use it instead of regular gas, who is gonna bother. At the end of the day it may be better for the environment but you get less mileage as well compared to regular gas.

Besides, the ethanol solution leads to its own problems, ask any pizzaria about that. One of those giant sacks of flour they use has gone from 4 bucks to 27, mostly because farmers are switching to corn for ethanol. Mass adoption of ethanol will lead to other financial problems, it is not that great of a solution.

This recession talk is ludicrous. $1 US = .63 Euros. Take that Europe!

I can't beleive the dying dollar isn't a bigger issue than it is. I guess all these nimrods who live in the flyover states could care less b/c half of them have never even been outside of their trailer parks let alone outside of the US.

A lot of chinese manufacturers I know had that problem, They quote in US dollars and it is a good 6 months out from quote to final payment. A lot of them aren't sophisticated to play the currency market to hedge. Doesn't your firm use the currency market to guard against this?
