Pats strike out first in free agency?

NFL Total Access just reported that the Pats offered Mason more money than the Ravens, but Mason's wife convinced him to go to Baltimore because she wanted to live there.

That would have hurt. Not sure which would have been worse, facing their wideouts or listening to Patriot Nation fans gloat about the signing.

If the contract is anywhere near as big as it sounds like it would have been, I would have disliked the signing.

I've said already: wheoever gets Mason helps themselves for this year.... but will probably end up paying too much.

That's coming from a Patriots fan who he turned down.

Uh, I know you're teasing me but I posted this in another thread where you guys were talking about him as a potential target for the Jets.

Now Hartwell.... if we make a push for Hartwell and get snubbed that'll sting a bit.

CAUTION: You have entered a "spin" zone.

Baltimore's contract for Derrick Mason for five years, $20 million, with a $7 million signing bonus.

Mason turned down a higher offer from the Patriots because his wife wanted to live in the Baltimore area. Makes one wonder about how the Patriots view David Givens' future. in New England. Like we said earlier today, expect a modest decrease in Mason's stats, but nothing crazy. He's a pro. Mar. 2 - 8:05 pm et

Ouch now this does sting a bit...

I would have LOVED Mason on those terms.

I agree that would have been the perfect contract for the Pats. A little heavy upfront but light in the back. Overall good deal for the Ravens.

Mind you, that 11 mil includes the entire SB

In other words his combined cap # for the first two years will be 6.8 mil---- 3.4 mil per year cap hit for the first two years. Not bad at all.

Oh, I read it wrong. Either way Mason is a tough SOB in the Heinz Ward mold. Fair money for him. I gotta believe that the Pats were not the only ones to strike out on him.

Not so good for NE so far.

Releasing Troy Brown, a guy who has been there for his whole entire career and is a true team player was stupid.

Releasing Ty Law, I could see that, but replacing him with Duane Starks rather then Samari Rolle / Fred Smoot or Ken Lucas? Stupid.

Andruzzi going to Cleveland, ouch.

Not like our off-season is any better. Fergie and LaMont gone and Jennings, Mason and Williams signed.

Sigh....

The Pats losses have been predictable, necessary, and inevitible. Believe it or not I've been saying Phifer, Brown, and Law would be cut (or kept only if they radically and sharply restructured, or in Law's case maybe traded) since LAST offseason.

It was crystal clear.

Phifer and Brown will be a combined 71 years old on opening day

Their combined cap number? 7.7 million dollars.

The cost to cut them? Virtually no dead money hit.

Law will be 31 years old, was due 12 milion on the cap, was cheap to cut, and had the worst agents in the league (postons) whose motto is "no cuts".

We've known Law will be gone for awhile now. and we won a SB without him.

Andruzzi? We didn't lose Andruzzi because we couldn't afford to sign him, I guarantee you.

What happened with Bruschi was potentially a major blow, but everything else has been predictable and in some cases welcomed: We jettisoned almost 20 mil from the cap (losing about 4 of that to dead money) by cutting three players whose average age was 34 y.o..

This isn't dismantling the team. This is smart cap management and pruning the old guys.

The Pats losses have been much more palatable than the Steelers (Burress, Bell probably) or the Jets (Ferguson, Jordan, MacKenzie probably).

The AFC East is really taking a hit this off-season so far.

Jets / Pats are obviously struggling and the Bills have lost Jennings and Williams so far...Miami is looking the best so far.

RS, thats the price of being a dynasty i suppose.

Man, the Steelers haven't done a thing yet but for some reason i'm elated with how this off-season is going so far. I guess the Pats losses are a good part of the reason.

Jet fans: No worries, you have a good team and will improve, trust me.

I can't wait for the freakin' draft to roll around! I'm well schooled in this wait-n-see Free agency stuff. :D

Actually my point SP is that the Pats losses have been small, were foreseen a long time ago and prepared for, and are nothing that concerns me as a Pats fan.

IMO the ONLY two real blows this offseason have been the predictable but still somewhat stinging loss of the coordinators, and the Bruschi stroke.

I'd put the Andruzzi loss up there as well. Just my opinion i suppose.

IMO the playing field just got alot more equal in the AFC.

Looks to me like the Browns, Bengals and Ravens are trying desperately to catch the Steelers as well. Next season's AFC North race should be interesting as hell IMO.

As RS pointed out, all the Patriots losses were players over 30.

The loss of Bruschi, purely my speculation, hurts alot. However, it is not enough to bring the team down.

The other losses of Andruzzi, Brown and Phifer do hurt but not as much. Brown was effectively replaced this past season and unlike past season he broguht nothing to the return game. Phifer's role diminished a bit and the Patriots still have some depth. I think ANdruzzi's loss hurts a little more then previous two, but Scarnechia has turned chicken poop into chicken salad with an NCAA wrestler and street free agents. I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Law's loss should be greater, but the team was 12-1 without him. Either way, while the defense cannot be as deceptive without Ty, his cap number was too much and the team was 12-1 with him and 15-2 without both top corners.

The bottomline the Patriots are not as good as they were 27 days ago when they won their third title in four years. IMHO Belichick is doing something similar to the 2000 season. Cutting all the access fat and building a new team. Luckily, the Patriots are still a good team and will compete for the title. Will they go 34-4 over the next two seasons? Probably not, but they will be contenders and drafting in the last 6 or so picks.
