Priest Homes or Tomlinson- who is better?

This year the AFC West promises to bring forth a wealth of rushing yards. Whoever is the starting back in Denver is almost guaranteed a thousand yard season, and LaMont Jordan looks set for a good year behind a young and talented Raiders offensive line. But the two best rushers in the division are standouts LaDainian Tomlinson from the San Diego Chargers, and Priest Holmes of the Kansas City Chiefs. To compare them and their styles, it is also necessary to look at the players who surround them and the men who coach them.

Priest Holmes is a typical Dick Vermeil type player. Vermeil excels at finding players who may not have been big starts at other teams, but who fit his system and the way he wants to play the game. Holmes was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens in 2001 as a free agent. He may have had some success there, gaining 1008 yards in his second season, but never enjoyed anywhere near the success he has had in Kansas. If you can possibly believe it, when Holmes came out of Texas in 1997, he went to Baltimore as an undrafted free agent. When you think how in depth the scouting combines look at players coming out of college, and what Priest Holmes has achieved in his career, it is difficult to comprehend that fact that they missed him, but they did.

Although undoubtedly Priest Holmes is a talented back who would have had a measure of success anywhere I truly believe that it is due to Vermeil and his supporting cast that he has become such a huge star in the league. Holmes

I take Priest any day, just one reason: TD's

Sure our Line is almost perfect is great, but no one can score at a Priest rate, heres one example: Blaylock (your new back up) did ok in priest absence, he had a game last year vs. the saints of 180 plus yards, but he was stopped at the goal line not once but twice. Tomlinson is a great back, some label him as the best in the NFL, but his production in terms of avg yds per carry droped last year below the 4 yds per att. Last year his line played very good, then is some kind of weird, I dont agree with the article, our system didnt make Priest what he is, he, since he joined us, has played with a chip on his shoulder, somebody ruled him out after his season ending injury in 2002, then he play the entire 2003 season with one thing in mind: broke the single season record for TD's, guess what, he broke it. So if I have to choose one i'd pick Priest, blindly.

I'm with LT. All the way. He may not have the same amount of rushing TD's, but he makes up with it for being three dimensional. He can run, block, and catch the ball. He'll run for 1900 yards, get 12 TD's on the ground, catch 80 passes for 1200 yards, and get 8 TD's that way. He's a multi-threat.

Those predictions are for this year???

Wow, it'd be the best seasson for a pro athlete ever!!!

Priest can do it all, too, he can run (last year was on pace to rush for 1800 yds with 30td's), he can catch and he blocks extremely well, he do it all, but for me its a coin toss between them, I wouldnt like to be in raiders and donks shoes!!!

While both are excellent backs LT is the younger

back so I understand why many like him..There is

alot to like both as a receiver and RB!! I always

look at what players do in big Games like

the playoffs or SB!! Neither has a Great Amt

of playoff time, but as a starter LT vs the Jets

had 80 yds rushing plus another 53 receiving with

No TD's! Holmes only playoff Game was vs the 03

Colts where he ran for 176 yds on 24 carries and

2 TD's!! I know I'm the only one, but I like players

that score! Holmes had more TD's in 8 games last

year then some Backs that played all 16 games!!

And unless they change the Rules I'll always

go with the player that can score when the chips

are down!! =D>

^^^ True

But dont ya think alot of other backs could just as easily put up those TD numbers behind that Chiefs Oline?

You dont think Priest is really a better back do you?

Who'd you rather have on the Jets, (age not an issue). I'd go with LT 10 times outa 10.

Priest, IMO, is the greatest NFL system running back ever.

Not predictions. He's done them. The rushing may be closer to 1500 yards, but LT's done that. LT is the best back in the game. And, he's not a health risk.

With the Age factor you go with LT..If they were

both the same age I'd take a undrafted back like

Priest over the more expensive LT! Do you think

Martin would have scored 62 TD's in 2 and 1/2

seasons running behind KC's Line?? Martin

has 53 since he's been a Jet thats a avg of less

then 7 a year! Now LT or Portis and some others may

have done some impressive totals..But until they

do Priest is a TD machine!! Plus he came up big in

his 1 playoff game with 176 yds and 2 TD's!

This reminds me of the old Emmitt Smith vs. Barry Sanders debate. Except this one isn't as heated because it's is even more blatantly obvious, since there is no glare off Priest Holmes' non-existent Super Bowl rings.

It's LT by far. Priest puts up great numbers behind the best offensive line in the league, plus he hasn't been healthy in over 2 years.

Age? Holmes was not even a starter at a young age. Not the comparison to make if you are arguing for Holmes.

The Point is did he have the Talent at a young

age?? Yes he did, just because they didn't start

him didn't mean he had no talent as a rookie!

Steve Young didn't start with the 49's his first

year..And he was a starter in the WFL! Penny didn't

start here we had Vinny, same with Lamont and Cumar!

The Reason I'd take Priest over LT was the

Money angle..LT was the 5th player chosen in the first

rd! Holmes was undrafted..Keep in mind we are all

doing this on Hindsight..So to me the best bang for

the Buck would be the production of a cheap Holmes

compared to a real expensive LT!!

LT is the better back.

Holmes has the better O-line...

If LT was in KC...he would be Priest Holmes

No doubt KC has the best Line..Holmes as a backup

with the Ravens avg a TD every 45 carries..Once

he went to the Chiefs he averages a TD every 16

carries..It helps to be the starter though..Hmmm

lets see what our departed backup Lamont did ..A TD

every 26 carries..And of course the Great God like

RB whose name shall not be mentioned avg a TD every

44 carries!!

Never ceases to amaze me.

So you rather I use another Team?? I do it because

it drives the Martinette's crazy!! Although in your

case EB it wouldn't be a Drive..A short Putt would

do!!

PS..LT averages a TD every 25 carries!!

I'm not even a big Martin fan, I have bashed him many times and criticized him.

Well then EB your on your way to understanding

Football and Value players! Here's a example..

Someone on JI said when Martin retires we will

never get another Martin!! Now here's how I think!

Martin as a Jet has averaged 7 and 1/2 TD's a year!

Take a Part time player like Johnny Hector(Hams GUY)

in the years he had 100 plus carries he avg 6.8 TD's

a season!!You may say, But Martin still avg 3/4's of

a TD more a season..True that..However Hector is

doing his 6.8 on 143 carries a season!! Martin is

doing his 7 and 1/2 on 334 carries a season!! So

to me I rather have 2 Good backs splitting time

keeping them both in tune to the offense, giving

the Defense different looks and keeping both Guys

Fresh when playoff time comes..If you ever get a

chance check out the Fins of the early 70's with

Csonka,Kiick and Mercury Morris!! That was a running

attack!!
