PITTSBURGH -- Pirates right fielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte have been traded from the club.

Though the team confirmed a trade, the Pirates have not revealed where Nady and Marte are going or whom the club is getting in return. According to the Pirates, those details will be revealed following medical evaluations of the players.

Though unconfirmed, the Yankees have been speculated as being on the other side of the deal.

Nady started Friday's game and was removed after one inning. Television cameras caught Marte hugging his teammates in the dugout in the second inning, apparently shortly after learning the news.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― After weeks of speculation, the Pirates could be on the verge of breaking up some of their roster.

Outfielder Xavier Nady and Relief Pitcher Damaso Marte have both been pulled from tonight's game at PNC Park.

Speculation began after the first inning when Nady was removed from the Pirates outfield and replaced by Jason Michaels.

Later, Marte was seen in the dugout shaking hands with Pitching Coach Jeff Andrews. It wasn't long before the Pirates confirmed a trade involving both players is pending. It appears a deal is done pending medical tests.

Sources tell KDKA the speculation is that both Nady and Marte could be headed to the New York Yankees, but that hasn't been confirmed by Pirates officials.

The Yankees have been widely reported to have an interest in both players with two of their younger pitchers, possibly Ian Kennedy or Phillip Hughes as one of the Pirates possible trade targets.

gotta admit

that "Matsui & prospect for Lincecum" trade rumor from last summer woulda helped us out alot. but i assume nothing ever came of that because Lincecum woulda been a STEAL regardless of what prospect we gave.

PITTSBURGH -- Pirates right fielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte have been traded to the Yankees. Though the team confirmed a trade, the Pirates have not confirmed that both players are indeed going to New York. However, according to one official baseball source, Nady and Marte have been dealt for right-hander Ross Ohlendorf and three prospects. Those prospects are believed to be lefty Phil Coke, outfielder Jose Tabata and right-hander George Kontos.

Coke pitched one inning for Double-A Trenton on Friday before being pulled.

The Pirates have not officially made an announcement and said they will do so after medical evaluations are completed.

Nady started Friday's game and was removed after one inning. Television cameras caught Marte hugging his teammates in the dugout in the second inning, apparently shortly after learning the news.

TRADE ANALYSIS, 8:40 p.m.: This is a smart move for the Yankees.

Nady gives the lineup a boost with Matsui and Posada out and unlikely to return. Even if Posada comes back, his shoulder problem clearly was hampering his hitting.

Nady can play left field, allowing Damon to DH. Marte slides into the bullpen, giving the Yankees what is right now the best unit in the league.

Tabata, while only 20, has not hit for power and was a discipline problem this season. Ohlendorf is a No. 5 starter type or a set-up man. Coke has pitched well the last two seasons but you have to give up something to get something.

Neither Coke or Kontos were among the team

Tabata is out for the year, but the Pirates already know that. He's the one special talent they're getting back. The other three prospects are all pitchers, and none are sure things to turn into reliable major leaguers.

With the way the Pirates were talking, it sounded like they were content to stand pat unless they received great offers for their players. That obviously wasn't the case.

It's not necessarily a steal for the Yankees -- Nady was due to fade anyway and now gets to face a whole new set of pitchers -- but for the price, it's hard to argue with the deal from their standpoint.

Tabata was unconscious good last spring, but he never really put it together. Add in some discipline issues-he went AWOL from Trenton earlier this season-and it's clear they had enough. If there will be a Yank minor leaguer to move up someday soon, it will be Austin Jackson. Nady and Marte are solid vets.

I like this move alot. Xavier Nady will probably be put in Leftfield until Damon is ready to go back there. Getting Nady makes our offense really good again, and Damaso Marte, I think he's perfect for this bullpen. This also probably means that LaTroy Hawkins will be Cut any day, minute, or second now.

Tabata has a future obviously. He's 19 and in AA. But there were question marks about his lack of developing power and his attitude. I don't like selling this low on him but this was pretty much a no-brainer. Coke is 26 in AA and Kontos almost 24 in high A and neither really figure to be in the long-term plans of the Yankees. And Ohlendorf sucks, and always will.

Nady is solid and the Yankees now have the best bullpen in baseball. It's not even close. Great job by the FO to get a trade done without any really major chips too.

What about Farnsworth?

Farnsworth has been very good this season. That doesn't mean he should be pitching the 8th. But he has been very good. Funny thing is he'll be the worst regularly-used pitcher in this bullpen.

And Hawkins deserved a demotion before he even started.

ohlendorf will be a great starting pitcher and i dont thing he sucks. edwar ramriez did wat ross did last year, have few good outtings then get wrecked in other games. Tabata idk much about but i kno we have austin jackson who is around same age as him and doing better.

Great trade anyway we get a lefty guy in bullpen and we get a guy batting .330 how much better can u get?

dead on, Farnsworth has been surprisingly decent

I don't trust him in the 8th against Boston though!!

There are so many differences between Edwar and Ohlendorf it's not worth getting into. Ohlendorf has the potential to, on the best case scenario, be a good set-up man in this league. He's not going to be a starting pitcher. He can't even master getting people out for one inning for God's sake.

Tabata still has a lot of potential but as I said there were huge question marks regarding his attitude and makeup along with his lack of power development. Jackson was the untouchable, not Tabata.
