I think it's pretty amazing. As for feedback: You know that I'm a big fan of your voice. I like the raspy, soulful sound that you achieve with it. You sound really good in the vid. As for the song itself: Even though you sing and play great, I just didn't connect with it for some reason. It also reminded me of one of my favorite T-Rex tunes, "Spaceball Ricochet". For Amps I'm using mainly a Johnson Reptone 15, but I have a Behringer GM108 V-tone, as well as a Silvertone Smart III and two first act amps, one 4 watt and one 10 watt. It started as a joke, but we are a cover band and with little (almost none actually) musical skill, we have played successful covers of popular songs, including: Dammit (Blink 182) I'm yours (Jason Mraz) Henrietta (The Fratellis) Mardy Bum (The Arctic Monkeys) Kryptonite (Three Doors Down) Scotty Doesn't Know (Eurotrip soundtrack) and, wait for it... Larger Than Life (Backstreet Boys) We are all going away to college this year so looks like the band will be breaking up. I've been trying to teach myself guitar for four or five years, with some success. I now play this (Thanks to JetsBabe): Not too good at guitar, may take lessons when I get to college. I've always wanted to learn the drums as well, unfortunately I've always lived with roommates and I just couldn't do that to them. It's a pretty normal thing for me to play if I don't go anywhere when the bar gets out, and banging on a drum-set at 3 in the morning always struck me as something that would be a tad inconsiderate. What instruments do you own and/or play? If possible, put whatever type or brand of instrument you play (ie. Fender, stuff like that). Throw up some links or youtubes if you got 'em. I know SFJ can give the link to his website for all his songs (I remember listening to that UFO song off that), and Boozer's got some youtube's. I play the pipes (bagpipes if you live under a rock), but am not currently in a band or doing funerals or anything like that. Hopefully when I get more free time I can. I used to play the piano and I guess I'm still serviceable at that. In third grade I played the recorder and got a bunch of colorful strings, lol. So I think that's everything I've played. I heard Thor plays a crazy skin flute, but I'll save that story for another night. bagpipes? WTF. Dude, that ranks just above the accordion on the "gets *****" scale. I have a chubby, awkward 15 year old brother who has skanky long hair and got his @ss kicked by puberty and he is doing alright for himself because he plays the bass and guitar and is in a hardcore band and a ska band. Get yourself a guitar, it is the easiest way out of nerd prison. And since you asked for brands, he plays a Music Man Bongo bass and a Fender Geddy Lee signature bass and my father's vintage 70's Gibson Les Paul guitar. He plays on a hartke amp and is probably getting a hartke stack next week, but my father wants to get him an ampeg tube stack. He plays at the School Of Rock in the city, which got him out of his shell, and tonight was his first show with his hardcore band playing their original music mostly. Talent makes things much easier, but with enough hard work someone can get really far any musical instrument. With music, I find talent makes things easier at first, and it's a much smoother ride, but without talent if you can get past that first hump everything becomes a whole lot easier. But maybe that's just me. I don't know. Talent matters a lot, just as practice does. I would say in music talent matters more than in sports. Studies of great musicians have shown that those that are at the elite level have accumulated practice of over 10,000 hours. OF course they also have a level of talent as well. Some things like perfect pitch, and the ability to not just play music but create it, is definitely a talent and what separates a person who can play an instrument with someone who is a true musician. My family has a very strong musical background (unfortunately I didn't share an interest in music as a kid, it was all about basketball for me, foolish decision). My grandmother would sit outside of her cousin's window and listen to her getting piano lessons, then she would go home and play. She became an extremely accomplished pianist and singer, and published a lot of gospel music, and played even as a lifelong diabetic who was legally blind. My grandfather could play any instrument with strings and was first bass in some big orchastras and played with Louie Armstrong on the Ed Sullivan show. My father was playing wedding gigs with grown adults when he was like 15, and studied Classical guitar at a music college. He could transcribe orchastral arrangements just from listening to them. They didn't just play an instrument, they were fantastically talented in addition to working very hard at it. OF course there are also people who can strum a few chords after buying a piece of 30 dollar software to teach them guitar, but they aren't really musicians. joebabyny Posted September 4, 2009 Share Posted September 4, 2009 I have always truly believed that drummers are born and not made...guys who can play the drums could ALWAYS play the drums while guitarists are mostly made...you NEVER hear of a guy who picked one up and could play it right off Yeah, my father's cousin is originally self taught, couldn't read music in any way whatsoever, but he was a monster drummer. He was actually the original drummer for White Lion, but he got disgusted and figured they would never be anything so he bounced. They signed a record deal shortly thereafter. He's been taking piano lessons now going into his 3rd month and that kid has a left hand like I can't believe. I've been screwing around with the piano for over 30 years and this kid can now read and play better than me. He works out of the book but when he REALLY impresses me is when I hear him riffing out on stuff he makes up on the spot . He's able to sit there now and perform for his nephews and nieces and sing and play. I think all those years of playing video games has really helped him with his dexterity for the piano. Your father's a smart man. A good sounding solid state amp is the Gallien-Krueger RB series. I use an 800RB when I play bass with two 1x15's and a 2x10. I play on a G&L L-2500: But I'm more of a guitar player. I've got a Fender Fat Strat, a G&L ASAT and S-500, an Epi Casino, a lawsuit Ibanez Flying V, and my other baby: Love that natural wood look, but my other guitars all have paint jobs.
