MANGINI GETS PRESSED ON INJURY REPORTING HABITS

Posted by Mike Florio on October 24, 2008, 10:06 p.m. EDT

As legend has it, Jets coach Eric Mangini refuses to acknowledge hamstring injuries. So when a player has a hamstring injury, it

when will these ******* reporters ask good questions like

"which offensive lineman graded out the best after watching the game films ?"

I don't care if nugent has a hammy or a quad or turf toe, I really don't

That would require the reporter to know something about the sport they are covering and actually do some research. Its a lot easier to report when all the information is given to you.

maybe i am him

If this is true, then you suck even more than we thought was possible.

You suck so much that they should write songs about your suckitude, and pass these songs down through generations. So in the future, parents can warn their kids that if they don't do their homework they will end up like 128/Leberfeld. You are the new Roy Munson.

a$$hole was the word you were looking for.

I don't come out in support of the media guys that often, but here I will.

Leberfields job is to report on the Jets. He's supposed to be able to get information and hand it out to us, the fans.

This Jets organization goes above and beyond in the realm of secrecy. Literally, can anyone think of the competitive advantage that the Chiefs will have this week by knowing Nugent is out with a hamstring, vs Nugent is out with a 'leg'.

You want to replace the Chiefs, fine, the Bills the following week, what is going to change in their meetings, in their gameplan, if they are to know that Nugent is out with a hamstring vs. a leg.

There's protecting your gameplan/strategy, and then there is absurd, and Mangini and co. have gone past the point of absurd.

What a dick..Nuggie's leg is hurt and he's not playing..I'm a fan and I'm fine with that information..Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill..All I need is who's the f**k is injuried and who the f**k is takin his place..lets see .."It's his ring finger on his left hand..above the middle knuckle that appears a bit swollen." Who the f**k cares..Is he playin or not I don't care if it's a LEG injury or his penis fell off..I don't give a crap about who's not playin.. just who is.

Have any of you guys ever met Leberfeld? I've met him a couple of times and he's a pretty cool dude. I think what gets in the way of his reporting is his love for the Jets...he's a big time Jets fan. And like us, he gets very frustrated when the team plays below its capabilities.

The only thing I can fault Leberfeld with is that he has to draw the line between being a reporter and being a fan. You can't be both when you're doing your job Dan.

Nobody was calling Leberfeld names when he was the first to start to rail on Herm Edwards and call him out for the fraud that he was when every other beat writer wouldnt touch him.

This one issue about Mangini happens to bother him a lot and I actually respect taht he took Eric up on it. Leberfelds biggest problem is he really thinks we the fans care about these injuries report. If a guy is hurt he is hurt, to me, it doesnt matter what body part is ailing him. If its a foot, toe, thigh. Who cares.

I had the chance to meet Dan once, nice guy, he asked me if I have an issue with how little Mangini divulges to the media and i told him point blank "I dont care, aslong as he wins on sundays he can say as little as he wants." Leberfeld nodded that I had a point.

I couldn't agree more. I don't get why the media is called a**holes for doing their job. It's just a shame that they don't apply this same pressure to people that matter like public officials. It is a journalists duty to be persistent. How else will they get the answers to tough questions? And sure the answer to this question may be somewhat trivial, but there is principal involved. I'm not the biggest fan of Leberfeld but good for him.

Are you guys happy with the same vanilla press conferences? I'm a Mangini supporter, but he has earned no special treatment.

I disagree. I am happy that Mangini isn't on the radio mid-week saying "we are going to run the ball more this week". Read these blogs of the main stream media guys -- how many times have they written about only being able to see the first 40 minutes of practice? Which consists of stretching, warmups and punting.

I would rather these guys not see the practices. I would rather the assistant coaches don't talk to the media. None of that helps the Jets on Sunday and that is all that matters.

Yes Mangini can go overboard at times. Not saying if Vilma's problem last year was in his left or right leg. Big deal if he releases that, but he is trying to change a media friendly culture. He has established his rules and they are what they are. Everyone knows it, so I am not sure what the point of pressing him on this is.

They aren't covering a Presidential election here.

Yeah, but after 2.5 years of someone making your job unnecessarily difficult, I can understand DL being a bit upset.

Did he handle it as well as he could have? No. Do you always?

The point, I think, is not specifically Nugent, but an overall frustration that Mangini has basically made him, and his colleagues useless.

I agree with you that Mangini shouldn't release his game plan, like Herm used to do, but there is a middle ground between giving up your game plan, and treating every question like they're asking about troop movements in Afganistan.

Good. For every good beat writer like Boland and Hutchinson, there are the *******s like Cimini, Leberfield, and Cannizarro.

As I'm sure you know, another side to this is player safety. you don't want the other guys knowing exactly where it hurts, or they will twist in in a pile

he's protecting his guys, screw the media, they are useless now in the internet age

Even though it seems Mangini takes it to far at times, it really doesn't matter. Its not his job to make the media's job easier. I could care less that they think their entitled to know every detail about the team and I really doubt many fans care how much medical information he's divulging about his players. His job is to help the jets win a championship, that's it.

Leberfeld is a gansta. I am pretty sure that is true.
Haha, best thing ever. One time on his blog, this Jets fan goes, "Leberfeld you whinny b*tch. - rudi" And of course 'rudi' spelled whiney wrong while he was at it. An instant classic. I spit out my ice-cold Pepsi over that. Leberfeld you whinny b*tch. Hilarious. :P

That's understandable, but it's not like anyone is gunning for Nugent when he's not playing. Nor was anyone gunning for Vilma when he was on IR.
