Coles to New York Jets: Give me the damn ball

Laveranues Coles, who suffered a concussion last week, makes a one-handed catch for the winning touchdown in the Jets' 28-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday.Laveranues Coles sleepwalked through the first half before delivering a not-so-subtle message to anyone within earshot:

Get me the ball.

A week after suffering the third concussion of his career, Coles hauled in a game-winning 15-yard touchdown catch with one minute left to help the Jets escape with a 28-24 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday at the Meadowlands.

"I made it through the game," Coles said. "So, I'm fine. Nobody had to come get me and drag me to the sidelines."

The game-winning play -- called "X Fly" -- was designed for Brett Favre to hit Coles on a fade stop on the left side. Favre, who hooked up with Coles on a fade route for a touchdown against the Cardinals a few weeks ago, admitted that he intentionally underthrew Coles on the fade-stop route.

"Actually, I wanted to put it a little bit more behind him than I did," Favre said. "It's funny, a couple weeks ago, it was the first fade (and) I threw it from the shotgun. It was the first fade-stop I really had thrown. Once again, it was one heck of a catch."

Coles and Jerricho Cotchery -- who was iffy with a shoulder injury all week -- combined for 16 catches and 168 yards. Coles, who had just one catch for seven yards in the first half, adjusted and made a nifty one-handed grab with his right hand.

"I think it's definitely one of the best catches I've seen this year," said Damien Woody. "You're not going to see that (kind of catch) very often. Watch 'SportsCenter' -- it'll come up a few times."

Coles finished with seven catches for 64 yards.

"From what I understand, (offensive coordinator Brian) Schottenheimer just said, 'Give Laveranues a chance,'" Coles said. "During the game, I know I seem really mild-mannered but I got kind of hard-headed, because I wanted an opportunity. Brett trusted me -- gave me a chance at the ball -- and I was able to make a play."

"You hope for an opportunity," the veteran wide receiver added. "It's something I'm expected to do by my teammates. When it happens, it feels natural. It feels like something I'm supposed to do."

No he's not. He's not as good as TO, Smith, Moss, Wayne, Holt or the other top level WR's in the NFL.

I'm going to disagree.

He may not be better than those listed..but he's not too far off either.

Very consistent year in and year out, and made Chad Pennington look good even when he laid him out to dry.

Give me a tough as nails receiver who will make the catch and can run over those prima-donna "me first" receivers any day of the week.

There's a big difference between a top level WR and a #1 WR.

You don't have to be elite to be a #1 caliber WR.

Depends on what your goals are. If your goals are to have an offense in the bottom 10 in the league, sure, you can trot out anyone and call them a #1 WR. If your goal is to actually have a playoff caliber offense though, #1 WR actually means #1 WR, not just #1 on the depth chart on some team in the NFL.

It's like in baseball. Every single team in baseball as a #1 pitcher, by definition. It's not like you can just skip past #1. But only the good teams have an "Ace."

Coles is not a #1 WR, or as you consider them an elite WR. You are both saying the same thing except he's calling it a #1 WR, just like many other people call it in football because there really isn't a better term for it like in baseball.
