PS3 Crapped Out - Question

Green DNA

Recommended Posts

My son's PS3 keeps getting an "unreadable disk" error message, now matter what disk he puts in the machine. He told me that he has seen something in a number of tech forums that say this is caused by one of the regular Sony automatic downloads and that if you if you bring this to their attention, Sony will fix it for free. Has anyone heard or experienced this?

I have no clue if he registered it

That's a good thing, just call them up and tell them what the problem is. Tell them it was a gift and you don't know when it was bought. Worked for me with my 360 when I got RROD.

This is clearly your son's fault. PS3's don't just break themselves. :box:

Or sell themselves based on this data from last year.

Overall and 2007 Video Game Console Sales Numbers in the U.S.

Posted on Sun, 20 Jan 2008 06:00:00 CST | by Luigi Lugmayr

Now that the holiday shopping season of 2007 is a couple of weeks behind us it is time to look at the sales numbers of the video game consoles.

The numbers below were released last week by the market research company NPD Group.

Nintendo took the first two spots with the DS and the Wii, by a huge margin. Surprising is that almost 4 million Sony PS2s were sold - outselling the Sony PS3 by 1.5 million.

If Nintendo would have been able to step up the Wii production they would have surely sold considerably more than the 6,290,000 million consoles they did. In case you wondered, there are still no $249 Wii consoles available online.

All three new generation video game consoles still have a very long way to go to catch the 40 million mark of the Sony PS2, especially when the PS2 is still selling in the millions.

Video Game Console Sales 2007:

* Nintendo DS - 8,500,000

* Wii - 6,290,000

* Xbox 360 - 4,620,000

* PlayStation 2 - 3,970,000

* PSP - 3,820,000

* PlayStation 3 - 2,560,000

* Game Boy Advance - 1,120,000

Overall Video Game Console Sale Stats:

* PlayStation 2 - 41,120,000

* Game Boy Advance - 36,240,000

* Nintendo DS - 17,650,000

* PSP - 10,470,000

* Xbox 360 - 9,150,000

* Wii - 7,380,000

* PlayStation 3 - 3,250,000

How about some data from this year?

By your logic, the only thing selling itself is the Wii. This year the PS3 and 360 have been just about even.

This is all I could find http://www.digital-digest.com/blog/DVDGuy/2008/03/19/game-consoles-february-2008-npd-sales-figure-analysis/

I don't have a dog in this fight as I don't play video games. My kids have a Wii and we do Wii sports, but thats about it for my participation in the console wars.

Yeah, I have a 360 and PS3, but haven't played either since before summer started. I wasn't saying that in support of the PS3, as much as comparing a console in its first year to another in its second and a half doesn't do much justice. Last year the 360 had much better games out than the PS3 as there was more time to develop for the system, but this year the PS3 has done pretty good on the software side. Just wanted to point out the argument was unfair, not support either side.

Just call up Sony they will take care of it for you Im sure unless somehow he voided the warranty by opening it up or something like that.

Gainzo... you showed the PS3's #s from its first year... it has been growing stronger by the month... just like the PS2 did when it clobbered the original Xbox... Its a better more reliable system with just about the same if not in some cases better games and all the features and more...

Wii is a fun console but aimed more as a general family fun console not a "gaming" console... also Sony has a bunch of stuff to compete with it... Little Big Planet, Singstar, ect.... sure it wont convince parents into spending the extra 300 bucks over a Wii... but it will make more kids transition to PS3 rather the Xbox, just like the PS2 did.

Basically Sony is following the same plan that helped it absolutely CRUSH Microsoft the first time around... and its working again...

Sony had a 1 year head start and countless millions unit lead over the competition in the previous generation. It had not competition outside of the dreamcast and it was building on Sony's success with the first PS which on the previous console war. So no... Sony isn't following the same plan at all.

Not to mention the PS2 also was a DVD player, that helped huge. It also had its fair share of problems, I had to buy two of them back in the day because it crapped out on me. This time around the PS3 has Blu-ray and its the best blu-ray player on the market. That's about it though...

They are following the same plan, they are steadily catching up and will have the longer lasting system so they will crush Microsoft again. Sony already has higher software sales with some of the big muli-platform companies and that is with less systems out there...

More proof for my point... last time everyone said CD was enough but Sony took the leap and went DVD... they wound up being able to get mroe life and more money/units out of the PS2 than the XBOX could get...

This time around... same thing.. everyone said DVD was enough... but Sony took the leap and used Blu-Ray and it will pay off again...

Not to mention the HUGE advantage is FREE online... might not seem like much to me and you... but a lot of parents like the feature.

What plan, catching up to who? Nobody stood a chance last generation. The PS2 was never in second... nobody came even close to catching them.

Sony is playing catchup for the first time ever and they have done a decent job chasing MS but both are getting obliterated by Nintendo. This is not anything that they have ever had to plan for. From sometime in 1997 until this generation Sony was the one being chased.

Exactly. There are a lot of consumers that are using the PS3 as primarily a blu-ray player.

It also helped that for the longest time it was cheaper to buy a PS3 than a stand alone Blu-Ray player.

How do you figure? Sales have gotten stronger and stronger while stand-alone players get cheaper and cheaper...

Sony always has and always will make the better product... they spend the time, money, and use the technology to make it possible... the 360 is a basic hardware money making machine for Microsoft... they went cheap and admitted it... lol

Honestly, I tell people if they want to go Blu-ray just get the PS3. Its the best on the market because of the updates, people who bought the stand alone player got screwed IMO. DVD is fine for me, the new 360 update will have netflix streaming in HD, I think that will be huge and get a whole new customer.

I tend to disagree with the "that's about it" comment. Built in WiFi, easily swappable 2.5" hard drive, wireless connectivity with the PSP for access to all the media on the PS3 from any WiFi location, Blu-Ray, a capable supercomputer thanks to the Cell chip, a computer thanks to Sony allowing (sometimes even promoting) the use of Yellow Dog Linux, numerous media hubs, the list goes on and on and that's only on the hardware side.

To say that the only thing the PS3 has over the competition is a Blu-Ray drive is simply asinine, even if you would never use all of the above features.

That was a true statement I made. I remember looking at the cost of stand alone Blu-ray players early this year and they cost more than a PS3. Sony's "cheapest" Blu-Ray player is now $100 less than the 80GB PS3.

I still don't buy the argument that Sony makes a better product. That may have been true in the '80's but it's not true anymore.

I have a 42" HP plasma TV, an IBM ThinkPad and a Dell desktop. All much cheaper than comparable Sony products and just as good, if not better.

In this day and age why are you such a Sony fanboy?

I was talking in terms of gaming console quality...

But their TV's are top notch too...

You know I don't give a crap about the PS3. Sony TV's? The most expensive sets in the history of electronics? My HP plasma is crystal clear. Why should I spend an extra $1,000 or $2,000 for a set that says Sony?

How much did you pay for your TV... Sony sets arent that expensive and are certainly a step above the rest...

1080P Sony Bravia LCD's

$1999 for a 52"

$1500 for a 46"

$1100 for a 40"

$639 for a 32"

No offense, but you must really suck at finding deals. I got (or I suppose found for my dad to buy) a 32" Sony HDTV for 500$ about a year ago at CostCo...the Vizio's were selling for 600$.

I also then got a great deal on a 40" Sony that came with a free PS3 and two games and a Blu-Ray movie. You certainly wouldn't be paying another 1-2K for a Sony HDTV over competitors, unless you swapped an HP CRT for a Sony super TV.
