I tend to disagree with the "that's about it" comment. Built in WiFi, easily swappable 2.5" hard drive, wireless connectivity with the PSP for access to all the media on the PS3 from any WiFi location, Blu-Ray, a capable supercomputer thanks to the Cell chip, a computer thanks to Sony allowing (sometimes even promoting) the use of Yellow Dog Linux, numerous media hubs, the list goes on and on and that's only on the hardware side.

To say that the only thing the PS3 has over the competition is a Blu-Ray drive is simply asinine, even if you would never use all of the above features.

I hear ya however the average person won't even bother with Yellow dog Linux, witch is a pretty basic distro (manually configure,Flash, youtube) and from what I read its pretty slow running on the console. PS3 is a better built machine no doubt, but I rather use my console to play games and 360 has the better catalog. I'll get one again once it hits the $200 range.

You know I don't give a crap about the PS3. Sony TV's? The most expensive sets in the history of electronics? My HP plasma is crystal clear. Why should I spend an extra $1,000 or $2,000 for a set that says Sony?

My experience with Sony products, is you have to buy their top of the line model to get the best. If you get the mid/low range model, you get screwed and you're only pay for the name @ that point. Other products out there where you get more for less, just gotta find the right deal.

Maybe if you mean something you buy at like a Walmart type store, Walmart and other discount stores have stripped down versions of all products made for them to trick people into thinking they are paying less for the same...

What Sony products are there that you would get less quality on?

Cameras, TV's, monitors, Laptops and Desktops. Look @ what they have done to the PS3 also.

No offense, but you must really suck at finding deals. I got (or I suppose found for my dad to buy) a 32" Sony HDTV for 500$ about a year ago at CostCo...the Vizio's were selling for 600$.

I also then got a great deal on a 40" Sony that came with a free PS3 and two games and a Blu-Ray movie. You certainly wouldn't be paying another 1-2K for a Sony HDTV over competitors, unless you swapped an HP CRT for a Sony super TV.

I bought my 42" HP plasma in January of 2007 for $900. It was delivered and they even took away my old TV. Back then it was impossible to find a comparable Sony for anything less than $2000.

I think I got a pretty good deal.

IMO the days of Sony having superior quality and technology are long gone. The only thing I own made by Sony is a digital camera and that was a Christmas gift.

I got a PS3, one game and a BluRay movie with my 40" Sony LCD TV for 2089$ on 6/24/07. I don't know the specs of yours and frankly couldn't be bothered to look up how the price value compares so I'll just take your word for it. I like doing the whole setup stuff and I usually dislike how they customize certain settings so I do it myself anyways. We use our old TV still.

I agree with you in that they don't have the technology advantage any more, but their consistency in quality has me trusting them over something similar by the likes of Toshiba. I've had no faulty Sony products (camera, TVs, PS3, PS2, PS, etc) so I tend to stick with them. Although, Acer's competitive prices within the computing spectrum has me leaning towards them for all my laptop needs.

I have a Acer monitor 22" that I bought last year for $200, its the same display panel on Samsung I love it. Also had a Acer laptop that was solid, the Acer Aspire One looks great for the price and its gotten some really good reviews.

My son's PS3 keeps getting an "unreadable disk" error message, now matter what disk he puts in the machine. He told me that he has seen something in a number of tech forums that say this is caused by one of the regular Sony automatic downloads and that if you if you bring this to their attention, Sony will fix it for free. Has anyone heard or experienced this?

There was a bad update that went out that caused a bunch of PS3s to get bricked.

Search for ps3 brick update and check to see if you downloaded it and when.

Thank you! I found a ton of tuff on this, let's see where it goes.

Yeah, I had heard about that bad update, luckily by the time I had seen the update they had fixed it and I didn't get the bad version. You should be able to see the list of updated applied to your system, if Im not mistaken...

Just got off the phone with Sony. Since the unit is over a year old they made me pay $149 to have it serviced. I mentioned the bad updates and the bricking and the tech guy said there are no bad updates and no problem has been caused by PS3 updates. I told him that I read about it online and he claimed that he knew nothing about it. It appears that they are just taking the denial stance. He basically said "no ticky no shirty" so I had to pony up the dough.

He's so full of **** I'd definitely get a supervisor on the phone.

The bad update earlier this year was 2.40, it was since yanked and replaced with 2.41.

I'll see if I can find you a better link:

Thanks a lot for the links. I can't see them since they are blocked at work, but I'll check them out tonight and prepare for battle tomorrow. I'll post the outcome since this issue may come up for others here.

All of the companies do the same thing, my buddy just had to pay for his 360 to get fixed too because the warranty was up...

If your PS3 got "bricked" from that update... you would know... the term :"bricked" should be enough of a hint... when a console gets "bricked" it doesnt work at all.. not just have disc read errors... it just wont work...

FWIW Microsoft has admitted a large # of their consoles had problems that were fixed and admitted ALL of their consoles have a defect...

Sony has reported less than 1% of PS3's have had issues so far...

Sucks you got one that messed up...

Does your son leave discs in the system when he is done playing or does he take them out before shutting it off?

Ok, good luck bro. Keep us posted. Be sure to mention Sony posted it on their own blog.

A firmware update wouldn't do anything to affect the laser that would read the discs. If you were the victim of faulty firmware the system would "brick", ie. it would stop working altogether. You wouldn't be able to access anything on the system if it bricked; the best you might get is an error message upon booting it. Nothing you can really do but send it in and pay the price--I could've helped you if it was the 360 but I have no experience with Sony's warranty. A disc read error is probably because the laser somehow got displaced, although it could be something else. Your two options are to open up the console and void the warranty and physically fix it or send it in and pay the price--I suggest the latter.

I'm willing to bet that he leaves the disks in the console

Will do, I'm not too optimistic but it's worth a shot.

I mentioned bricked to the rep and he pooh-poohed the whole concept of bricking. The only thing I know about the machine is how to turn it on and that is after five muinutes of looking for the on/off switch so I will send it in to the factory.

BTW, if you weren't so tall I'd swear you were a midget, no way you are 14 even though you look it.

There is a theory that leaving discs in video game consoles can cause problems with disc read errors on all systems... don't know if there is any truth to it... but it cant hurt to take the disc out when the system if off...

Best of luck

Dude I don't even think you will comprehend this but this is not about 360 vs. PS3 for f#ck's sake. He has a PS3 that is jacked up and is looking for help.

Get a 360.

You'd be able to reclaim your spot as the greatest dad in the world.

You're welcome.

if you would have gotten a 360 it would have been an easy fix. Too bad.

My son traded in his PS3 at Game Stop for an XBOX 360. I lost some $$$$.But 360 is 10X better.

Try reading next time, wasnt me who turned it into that.

To be fair what i said wasn't wrong The 360's break a lot and thus microsoft have become experts at fixing them. They certainly got enough practice.

I'd say you used the wrong adjective. Not easy, per se, but cheap. But that's one of my little secrets--so far has worked for me, Thor and Max. If anyone has a broken 360 past the one year warranty, let me know.

They definitely aren't experts. They spread misinformation all the time, and the chances are high for the returned "fixed or replaced" console to brick on first bootup or soon after. I'd venture to say that the console shipped back from Microsoft-land breaks about 50% of the time.

You are a good poster in the football forum but come off as a "know it all" in this forum.

This is a healthy critique: Stop saying people suck and that they are stupid because they didn't get the best deal. Not for nothing but I got a great deal on the 42" plasma that I bought with my money 2 years ago. I even used an HDMI cable!!!

There are plenty of people out there who struggle with electronics and how to connect all of the components. I'm not one of them and I would never make fun of those people.

I'm really coming off as a d-bag in this forum lately. Please excuse. I'm chalking it up on stress--reading back on my posts I wasn't the nicest.

I apologize, at the time I didn't even know what deal you had made. But, other than these two threads I haven't been that bad. Lil Bit basically summed up what I meant to say, but in my brash anger and in an attempt to piss off 5180 I acted like a douche.

I'm not trying to make fun of them, although the two posts you refer to make it look like I do. Trust me, I'm not like that. I'm just extremely stressed out, sometimes I use the site as an (un)healthy way to let it out.
