Columbia Jet Fan
So I have an old mac which is way past its prime....could it be a breakdown of a computer due to age? Could it be b/c I used it all the time? Or could it be that time I dropped it while I was hammered? Who knows? Anyway, I got a new Thinkpad which I love, but I am trying to keep in pretty good condition. I am only using it for work related stuff and don't want to put my music/images on there to take up space. I was thinking of buying an external hard drive b/c my apple would probably run a lot better w/o all the music on it since it can barely play songs anymore w/o freezing up for a second. Unfortunately I downloaded a lot of my music from like Limewire or other sites like that which have been known to have some viruses...nothing ever happened w/ my mac but I know a lot of viruses were written specifically for PCs and Im afraid if i put them on my external hard drive and then use my CD to play them or load them into my IPod- I will get a virus. Can I play music on my PC through the external hard drive at all? and if I can is my PC capable of getting a virus if I have one on my music files. I would never be putting them onto my computer's drive, just playing them from my external hard drive...if you can even do that...never had one before... rillo
Yes you can play music off the ext. HD, however if you open that file with a virus, it will spread, because it will use whatever media player that's installed on the PC. Correct me if I'm wrong, have you tried using a Anti-virus to scan the ext.HD?
Columbia Jet Fan
No, haven't even bought the HD- the answer to this question will kind of determine my decision. Haven't tried scanning it- is it reliable? Could I just install the player on the HD too? Thanks a lot for your help rillo.
rillo
If you have a up-to-date anti-virus it should work, I don't have much experience with Anti-virus programs though, I know viruses constantly change so updating is a must. AVG is a good one and its free, if you really worried about virus protection you should just buy it, comes with more than just Anti-virus. As far as installing the player on the ext. drive, you got me there...sorry.

Yes as a matter of fact I use my external HD as my iTunes library as well, since I didnt want to clutter up my home or work PC with thousands of mp3 files. That and you won't run into a problem with transferring them when it comes time for a new computer.
