Kleckineau
Jets ILB David Harris (hip, groin) is not expected to play in Week 9. Harris' injury is considered a week-to-week situation, meaning he could miss multiple games. David Bowens, a converted outside linebacker, will start against the Bills. Harris' loss helps Marshawn Lynch's matchup a little bit.

David Harris hasnt played anywhere near the way he did last year.Interesting he gets hurt sort of the same situation as Vilma but yet no one criticizes ridicules.Could Harris have been hurt all along limiting his ability to make the big plays. Jetkid94
Harris has only impacted the run defense this year, but we still have Jenkins. Harris is a reaosn for why the LB coverage is so bad. I think Bowens played well when he came in. Im just saying having Bowens play pass coverage can give edwards just a little bit of a tougher time. im not suggesting that Bowens is better than Harris, because I still would like to have Harris, but the point is this could be a blessing in disguise for the jets pass coverage. dbatesman
Bowens is terrible in pass coverage. And I'd like to see Pace kick in to ILB, if only for a few series, to see how it works out. He's shown the ability to cover--and, obviously, shed blocks and stop the run. Then Gholston and Bowens could platoon in at OLB. People can dog on Gholston all they want, but the only way he's going to improve is by getting more PT. He may be the next Shawne Merriman or the next Mike Mamula, but the only way we're going to find out is to play him. And by "play him," I don't mean "occasionally rotate him in on pass-rushing downs or in specialty 4-3 fronts." I mean play the kid.

Maybe he's blocked out on my TV screen by Harris's fatness Why can't we give Gholston an extended look by using him like you do a DE in a zone blitz scheme. Either blitz or drop into a shallow zone and try and get in the way of any ball heading in that direction. Seems like he should be capable and what we lose in chicanery we may make up for in athleticism...

I like your idea about Pace shifting inside, but putting a Gholston in in such a critical game could prove very costly. This isn't exactly the best time to be experimenting. Agreed about Gholston's role...putting him in a short-coverage zone, rather than chasing guys over the middle of the field, would be ideal. Confuse the OL and play to Gholston's strengths. Either turn him straight upfield or ask him to cover a small, defined area. As for Pace, I've seen him out in the flat occasionally, and he seems to have more fluidity than Harris, which you'd expect switching from an ILB to an OLB. I wouldn't advocate putting Pace in there for too long, but for one week we can swing it. Yup, as bad as Harris was Bowens was that much worse. It's a risk, no doubt, but I feel like what Pace gives us inside (stoutness against the run/strong inside pass rush) can make up for any struggles Gholston may have on the outside. And if it turns out to be EPIC FAIL, we can just bring Bowens back in, either at OLB: Bowens-Barton-Pace-Thomas or at ILB: Thomas-Barton-Bowens-Pace

He has been pretty dire in the limited time he's seen thus far, but getting more playing time couldn't hurt his progress.

HAHAH and what has he done to prove that. If we're going to have a contest for fastest man over 260 lbs, Gholston is our man. If we're going to play football, Gholston is probably best where he has been the last few weeks.

His decision tree at that point becomes supremely easy, run/pass:kill Qb/stand in zone and get in the way... get him on the field and lets see what he's got. For some reason I think they have the kids head scrambled by trying to learn the whole defense
stoicsentry
Mangini is in Manginis dog house the guy needs to get his head out of his ass and start coaching like an NFL coach. DEPRESSED JET!!!!!!
+1 The whole letting him learn on the sideline instead of letting him get comfortable with the flow of the game makes no sense.
124
This is no shocking news, this was reported Monday that he would miss a game or so. Whatever that meant, at least a game is what I got from it.

For some reason I think they have the kids head scrambled by trying to learn the whole defense Agreed. He's not going to improve by studying, he's going to improve by getting out there and using his athletic ability to make plays. That, in turn, develops confidence and instincts, both of which he clearly lacks right now. The studying can come later--he's got a whole career to learn every damned play in the book. For now, just turn the kid loose and see what he can do. And like I said--say what you want about his slow development, Gholston has NOT been turned loose yet. Putting him in situationally doesn't count. Depressed Jet is right, he can't get any sense for the speed or flow of a game if he plays once every 4 downs.
