Cold Hard Football Facts: With Pennington, Jets win QB shell game

Bill Parcells has overseen more rehabs than the Betty Ford Clinic. But his effort with the 2008 Dolphins may prove his best work yet.

Much of the credit for Miami's ascension -- the 'Fins have already tripled their 2007 win total -- goes to a single acquisition: Chad Pennington, the woefully underrated quarterback whose historic efficiency far outweighs his reputation as a noodle-armed parabola-tosser.

As we enter the halfway mark of the 2008 season, Pennington has proven the single greatest acquisition Parcells (or anyone else for that matter) has made this year, while the Dolphins are the clear winner in the high-stakes quarterbacking shell game they played with the Packers and Jets back in August.

The Dolphins acquired Pennington this summer almost as an afterthought. The Packers had rejected Brett Favre after his ill-fated fling with retirement, while the Jets couldn't resist the time-honored allure of the old gunslinger or his quest to pad his all-time INT record (now at 299, including a league-high 11 here in 2008).

So the smitten Jets outbid everyone for Favre's services, while Miami's famed coupon-clipping, grocery-shopping vice president of football operations saw an opportunity to upgrade the most important position on the field and handed Pennington the starting gig.

The Dolphins have improved dramatically in almost every area over the pathetic 1-15 team of 2007. But nowhere has the improvement been more dramatic than in the passing game.

The Cold, Hard Football Facts rate passing attacks by adjusted yards per attempt, which accounts for sacks and yards lost on sacks. It's an incredibly telling indicator that has a direct correlation to winning football games. And Miami's turnaround in this area has been nothing short of stunning.

That Chad?

Hey remember the post you just made about how Favres throws in last years championship game were throws anyone could make?

Try applying that some logic to many of Chad's TD's this season including his 2 longest, and re-crunch those numbers without them..

Favre is he most self centered SOB there is in football.

Pennington is weak armed, but accurate with his throws.

Favre throws it up for grabs.

I can understand why jets Management went after favre and cut Pennington.

It was a two pronged attack....

Take the chance that favre can win now, while we have to sell PSL'S

Jets weren't getting by the Pats/(with Brady) as long as Pennington was QB,

But when they made the move to Favre It was pure desperation.

They sacrificed team concept For FavreMania,Good luck with that!

In fact, if not for a series of injuries that have hampered Pennington's career, or the Stone Age offensive theories that seem to consistently plague the Jets, we might be talking about him in the same breath as Tom Brady or

With with that, any credibility this article had, vanishes into thin air.

POOF GONE........................................

?

What does this have to do with anything?

All of my points were used as a criticism of Favre, not as praise for Pennington.

Well thank you Norway'sWaddlingMarmaloof, I try ;)

can't argue with the stats thru 7 games played. sparano is doin a great job utilizing what he has.

chad is a model of consistency but along with it comes predictibility. this season will catch up with him

Man you Jets fans are lucky to have rival fans here like crashingjet, hardkore, alk and gainzo. I never get the luxury of having funny banter with clowns fans.

crashingjet has been a very good poster, I can't remember much on hardkore, but I might have to disagree with you on the other 2.

alk and gainzo are wildly inconsistent, but they lean towards bad these days. Those two are the Mangini and Schott of posting.

crashingjet only shows up after the Dolphins win. Alk and I are here regardless if the Pats win or lose.

BTW: I don't go around calling posters spermguzzlers. I would say you are the inconsistent one.

I read your reply to be mocking his doubters, perhaps I read wrong..

That picture I posted was crashingjets avatar for years on this site up until the moment (shockingly) when Chad became a Dolphin. Now he's posting articles that compare Chad to Tom Brady......

Awesome work CJ.

I posted an article (maybe the exact same one) that had that same quote about him being in the Manning / Brady catagory if it weren't for his injuries MONTHS ago. Its a joke to say that because you never know what would've happened.

Not true, I show up when we beat the Pats also. Remember the 5 TD game Ronnie had against you guys. I was all over this board like a crackhead on a rock :P...

Mark my words, one of these days the Dolphins will beat the Jets again, and after 3 seasons of posting here I will get my moment in the sun to gloat... One of these days.

I'm with Gainzo on this one. I wouldn't consider him a troll.

Someone bump my Fins circle jerk thread..no one has posted in it lately.

The best part is CJ bashed Chad for years...now he is the next Tom Brady. Your hypocrisy and homerism knows no bounds.

I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about ;)

Amusingly enough, I can all but guarantee that if we ever get a streak going against the Pats they will all just disappear.

It's possible, but c'mon, do you really want to lose Garb and Alk? Rhetorical question ;)... Sometimes I think the only reason I stick around here is because... Damnit, one day I want to come to this board after a win. Just once I want to come here after a game and not have to say "well the better team won" etc... Such Horse$hit. I guess I'm just a whippingboy for now, but one day... Ohh I rue the day :P
