jason423
No question about it, this was the most complete game the Jets played all season. After a somewhat messy start the team settled down and made a statement type drive to finish the game off and get the biggest win of the season. . Offense Definitely a lot of positives. While the stats may not say it this was the best game that Thomas Jones has played this year and likely his 2nd best career game as a New York Jet. Jones showed some good bust today, actually moved around at the line to make guys miss and was important a player as there was on the final offensive drive of the game. Unlike Oakland, Buffalo is a tough team to run on and Jones made it look easy in the 4th. Credit also has to go to the offensive line who had their best game today as well. The team had some tough times picking up the early blitzes, but as the game wore on the Jets dominated the point of attack and physically outhit the Bills. Favre played much smarter today than he has in some time, though he missed a wide open Coles early in the game. He took everything available underneath rather than forcing the issue deep. He had one ball that was picked off but, while the pass wasn
Thai Jet
Big win in a truly big game. Great game plan, good execution. Long time consuming drives and the defense only gave up 10 points. I would have like to see some of those 3's turned into 7's but I'm very happy right now.
ZachEY
Great read, as usual. I very much doubt the Jets will look past the Rams. I think (hope) we learned our lesson from the Raiders. And, the Rams lost today, assuring they're a non-factor at this point, but if I'm not mistaken, they are still 2-1 with new coach Haslett.
gang_green03
Very nice write up and I pretty much agree with most of what you said. However, I disagree with some of the coaching negatives you saw. I don't think that Mangini made a bad decision in taking the penalty. Common sense would tell you that best case scenario you put them out of FG range and worst case they just kick a FG anyway. You gotta have faith that your D can stop a 3rd and 16. I put that one all on the players. Also, the offense being conservative to end the half wasn't a big deal to me. I can understand the logic, you keep the clock going and go into the half up 2 scores rather than give the Bills time to put together a drive. Again, I put this on the players caues you gotta be able to kick a 30+ yarder. Feely made that decision look bad even though I'd like to kill Schotty for that. And that's a good point about the Rams. I really hope they don't fall into that trap. I tend to believe they won't since they've already had some poor games against bad teams and don't want to repeat mistakes. Irish Jet
Very good performance today although the offense still needs some work. The defense was sensational today, shutting down the run game and forcing Edwards to make mistakes. I'm very happy with this performance especially after the disaster that was the last two weeks. If we can utilize the running game more often and if Favre can get rid of the pick sixes we're in pretty damn good shape going forward. The coaching was good for th most part today except for some questionable calls on offense. The Rams won't be the pushover we all expected a few weeks back but we should beat them well. The Pats in two weeks is going to be a HUGE game in determining this division IMO.

They beat Dallas and Washington and had the rough loss against the Pats last week. They had to win against the Cards to keep their hopes alive and just got destroyed. Im hoping they give up now, but I dont think we can overlook anyone based on our track record thus far.

Yup, wasn't sure on the record, and didn't bother to look it up. All that said, lets hope that the reality of the situation, being 6-3, is much more important than the Patriots game thereafter. Magnus Malax
I will agree with most of it except the bit about taking the penalty against Buffalo after forcing fourth down. That put them into third and 16. You certainly can make the argument that a pass interference or blown coverage will make that look like a bad choice but the defense showed they were here to play. I can't fault him for the call. I think that while the media may spin this a certain way, it is certainly possible that the Bills played poorly because the Jets' good play or schemes forced them to. Just like you want to give your opponent credit when they outplay you...give your own guys some extra love when they force errors on the other side. Well thought out post. I always appreciate them. CTM
Nice read as usual Jason, thanks for the cross post! Good call on the half time adjustments. I think the foul taste in my mouth from the first half was overpowering my perception even thou I realized how well they played in the second.. Still, it seem like we almost always have success with the play fake, but we never call it. I don't understand why?

Im not sure if it works for us because we rarely use it and it catches teams off guard or if it just works well for us and our coaching staff simply doesnt like it. We didnt use it much last year either. The Jets seems to enjoy using the fake WR screen as their main playfake every week, with it either leading to a delayed draw or a pass to the other side of the field. I wished we used it much more especially in the red zone, where we were pretty awful today.
nyjfan
This should be signs of good things to come...a few things need to happen first. This is all coming at a good time though because the late season is a tough schedule. They should now be figuring out how to best use Brett Favre. Today was a good example, a little too conservative though. After that they have to work out better plays for the red zone. If those things happen this team should make it to the playoffs. As it stands right now, this team hasn't shown 100% performance & ability yet and we're still winning games. After today they should have a pretty good idea about how to go about the rest of the season with this offense.

We don't really have a Roscoe Parish type out there that can house it.. IN terms of play action, our season started with a long TD against Miami on play action. I think it just works for us.. ECURB
Safe to say that Bowens is not a capable starter in the 3-4, especially not as an ILB. Great backup player/situational rusher. A completely liability in coverage. Drew Coleman is just a joke. Bowen got exposed a bit... but it was expected at ILB IMO... He is more of a passrushing OLB... Coleman is indeed awful... and Lowery came back to earth... I saw Barrett playing opposite Revis sometimes today...
CoachTsurfing
Yeah, this was a make or break game for us. I still can't get over how sloppy we look. Is this how Favre always played in GB? He had 200 yards today and I was expecting like 3+. If he's going to throw 2-3 int's a game he at least better be throwing 300-400 yards a game. Thank God for Jenkins. We have got to get that dude some help. We need to replace Bowens in the draft or free agent.

Yup, I seriously don't get why the Hell they don't utilize it more often than they do. I wondered the same when Pennington was at QB but at least then the running game wasn't as strong. There is no excuse for NOT using play action more with Favre at QB.

I agree. I really hate the WR screen and, hence, the fake. I did see an interesting fake off of it once by the Saints back when Aaron Brooks was their QB. They faked the screen while one of the slot guys ran an out and up. Pump fake to the screen and threw the deep ball. It was an incredible long TD. I just wanted to take the opportunity to agree with you on something:)

SMC
Great read, Jason. It is still wild that in his coaching career, Mangini's team had only been 3-9 against winning teams. Today was another win. Great job. But sometime it's better to be lucky than good because Mangini had the luck of the Irish on Elam's Pick 6 because that was a dumb decision IMO to accept the penalty on 3rd down rather than decline it and have them hit the 44 yard FG. I was absolutely enraged with that. I was already cursing at the TV when the penalty was accepted. When Buffalo coverted it for a first down I wanted to see Woody Johnson saunter out onto the field and send Mangini packing. Granted it worked out great, but that was just beyond dumb. If we're talking about a 15 or even 10 yard penalty that legitimately pushes them out of FG range then I can kind of see it. 5 yards doesn't even begin to make enough difference to turn down a 4th down. That said, from there on out the Jets coached a very good game all around. The late drives were impressive and while the red zone troubles were worrisome, Buffalo is a good team this year and they are a team that has always given the Jets major troubles, especially in the last few meetings. This was a big win and outside of that one coaching decision and the awful Pick 6 by Favre, there's little to not be happy about. Watching some of these guys play are a real pleasure, which is something we don't often get to experience with the Jets. Thomas Jones has really hit his stride and had another big game. Leon Washington always has a few great plays a game. And on defense, Kris Jenkins and Darelle Revis are really two of the most impressive players in the league at their positions. Plus, it was nice to see Kerry Rhodes getting involved and making the kind of impressive play we know he's capable of.
