Gainzo
Im drawing a blank. Would we be in first or second? If the Pats lose tonight. Pats 5-3 (1-1 Division) Jets 5-3 (2-1 Division) Bills 5-3 (0-2 Division) Phins 4-4 (2-1 Division) The Pats would technically be in 1st place as the first tiebreaker is the head to head record. Actually no. 3 way tie - Division record would be before head to head. The 1st tiebreaker is if 1 opponent has swept the other 2.. since it didn't happen, Division Record. In a two way tie, yes. In a 3 way, it's divisional record. Plus, saying someone owns the head to head tiebreaker after one game was played between the teams is stupid. The Pats do not own the HTH on the Jets, the Dolphins don't own the HTH on the Bills or Cheatriots, and the Cheatriots don't own the HTH over the Jets. ECURB
I understand that. Its not the Pats fault they have only played two division games. Its not their fault... its just the way it is... same as in baseball when one team has played a few more game and has the same loss total but a couple more wins... SMC
By the way, Buffalo can kiss the division goodbye if they lose next week against the Pats. That is a huge game for the Bills. They can't go 0-3 in the division with a 3 game losing streak and expect to win the division IMO.

I know you're being sarcastic, but being 5-3 and tied for the division lead is HUGE for the Jets because it means they control their own destiny for the last 8 games. 8 games is a long time, but being where the Jets are now is way better than having to try to fight to get to .500, leapfrog WC teams, and pray someone loses. We're not going 8-0 so it really doesn't make a difference. We're 5-3 and have a chance at a playoff spot. That's what it means. Breaking down the tiebreakers now is pointless. Breaking down the tiebreakers now is pointless. On the first point, I'm not saying they'll go 8-0, but they can. And it's great that they don't have to to get a WC spot. As to tiebreakers, its not pointless because they Jets are not in a hole. You think the Bills being 0-2 in the division is not important? That's a big hole for them and if they lose next week against the Pats, that will be a bigger hole. Midseason tiebreakers are important because if a team is ahead in them, it gives them a cushion for the back 8.

Sure I'd rather the Jets be in the situation they're in then the ones the Bills are in but the Jets haven't done nearly enough to secure a postseason birth. CobraVerde
How does 2-1 = 1-1 exactly? They beat us so they would be first. Its as simple as that.
Irish Jet
The Pats next 3 games: @ Indy vs Bills vs Jets Those game are HUGE in determining what will happen in the AFC East. The sad thing is, as the divisional opponents beat up on each other Miami play the Seahawks and Raiders. Good God this is one ****ed up division that could go to ANY of the teams. yisman
They beat us so they would be first. Its as simple as that. not in a three way tie. And SMC, division and conference records do matter, of course. My point was mainly towards the HTH, which I feel is silly when there's another game left. there are a lot of tiebreakers that will still come into play

yisman
cheers to JetFanInMD http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined. Three or More Clubs (Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format). 1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs). 2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division. 3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games. ==================== So if the season ended today after a Cheatriots loss, the standings would be: 1)Cheatriots (beat Jets) 2)Jets (beat Bills, lost to Cheatriots) 3)Bills (lost to Jets) 4)Dolphins of course, the tiebreakers will look somewhat different at the end of the season. Actually the Jets would be number 1 under the tie breakers, not that it means anything this early. Because there is no head to head between the Bills and Pats that tiebreaker would be thrown out. The tiebreakers then revert to the second tiebreaker, which would be won by the Jets. Jets are 2-1 in the division while the Pats are 1-1, and Buffalo is 0-2. It is in the Jets best interest for Buffalo to beat New England next week.

Midseason tiebreakers are important because if a team is ahead in them, it gives them a cushion for the back 8. I think this is the first week where you can really start to at least see a real playoff picture forming. When it comes to the division the Jets really need the Pats to lose to Buffalo next week. Id much rather be tied with a Bills team we play again at home than a Pats team we have to play on the road. Its more likely the Jets need to finish 1 game better than NE that it will be the Bills. I think the way the league is shaping up is that its a 7 team race for 5 playoff spots. The AFC West is only getting 1 team in(either Denver or SD) and they are of no concern. Cleveland is shot, Cincy is shot, and Jacksonville and Houston are both shot. Basically it comes down to all 4 teams in the AFC East along with the Colts, Steelers, and Ravens for the other spots up for grabs. We certainly dont have a wildcard cushion as the Colts only have 2 losses and Baltimore is 5-3 in the AFC, but have put ourselves in very good shape in the divisional race.
