JETSFAN5180
Surely yesterdays win in Buffalo was a huge win.Im just not satisfied with the play calling. Schottenheimer is a bumThe offense on certain situations is becoming so dam predictable.Id like to see some downfield passes with LC or JC catchig a vintage Favre pass in stride and taking it to the house. Oh and one another note the Thomas Jones haters better look closely at the performance hes been giving the NYJETS week after week.
DoubleDown
I thought the play calling was vastly improved against the Bills. The coaches actually called a good game on both sides of the ball and put our players in a great position to make plays. I've been calling for more slant patterns for weeks, and it seems like Schott finally agreed with me. Slants were the bread and butter for Favre in GB for a long time. They were finally put to use yesterday and were very successful. We also did a great job of balancing the run with the pass, and kept the defense on its heels. The defense had a great game as usual. We had a good mix of blitzes and 3 man rushes, and shut down the run completely. We need to get better against screen passes.
Bugg
I don't want to see another tackle eligible pass play this season. If you're going to bring in another blocker, have him blow someone off the line and run the ball.

They aren't very vulnerable to the deep ball (3rd in the league in fewest 20+ yard pass plays allowed). Much like the Jets, if you dink and dunk over the middle against them, you can march down the field. So overall, Schottenheimer called a great game. We saw some quick slants, and even some playaction. This was the first week when the Jets' offense seemed tailored toward the opposition's weakness. And the offense being predictable is fine with me, as long as it works. As far as I'm concerned, the Jets spent all that money on the OL so they could be predictable--so that in obvious running situations, they could still run the ball even when the other team knows it's coming. Cue the crushing final drive from yesterday.

Aside from the fact that they continually sent Turner in motion. Did anyone see this dude run? no way could he catch a ball. Splitting him out wide just to motion him inside is only wasting calories. No team would guard him out there. I'm fine with the extra tackle in passing or running downs but don't make a spectacle out of it. line him up off tackle and blow some defensive ends off the ball. This was an important divisional road game against a good team. Jets had to play at a much higher level in order to win, and they did. CS called a solid game and the players executed it impressively, for the most part. This is the kind of win that the Jets can really build on, and start a good run. JETSFAN5180
All good and valid points. But are you really satisfied with Schottenheimer up until this point. .Hes been erratic and predictable to say the least. Im not really comfortabale going into the home stretch with some important games coming up if he isnt go change a few things.
124
The playcalling was better yesterday but there were still moronic situations by the coaching staff and Mangini such as: -Accepting the ineligible man downfield penalty that if it wasn't for Abram Elam would've ****ed us and given Buffalo a bigger lead. and -Calling a pass play in your own territory on the road against a division rival/opponent in a critical game on 1st & 10 when you're up 23-10 with 11 minutes to go. I'm sure I could find a couple more, but after a win, who cares? The coaching staff was better yesterday, but they still arn't having great or even good games. What WAS predictable as far as the play calling goes was that there were not going to be those downfield passes as in previous games. It was obviously they were going to rein Favre in and not let him throw those bombs into double coverage. Unless its against a specific team for some reason they can dink and dunk and run the ball the same way they did it yesterday for the rest of the season. And I agree with you about TJ. He is running well and getting those first down when needed.

I was like WTF? run down that clock. They thought that everybody at the Ralph was expecting a run so you throw a pass and mabe get a TD out of it. All we got was . Favre NEVER should have thrown the ball. Super coverage on the play by the CB. I'm sure however if it had been completed for a long play we all would have been praising Shotty to death. Make them convert 3rd & 16. You know it's a pass, making the offense 1-dimensional. Your defense has to hold there. It's 16 yards, not 1 yard; a low-percentage conversion to say the least. And even if they do convert, that's still no guarantee they get into the endzone for a touchdown. I had no problem with not allowing them to kick an easy 40-yarder in a close game. The fact that it didn't work doesn't mean it was a bad idea. It means the defense screwed up badly on the ensuing play.
serphnx
I thought the defensive play calling was still awful. For God's sakes, the Bills offense at one point held the ball for over 15 minutes. Yeah I know they didn't score, and we actually outscored them there, but that is not good. We also needed that huge drive by Favre to ice the game, if we don't get that huge drive, we are sweating this game out. It's one thing for them to drive right down the field 9 points down, but it'd have been another if they were only 6 down. And we need to stop throwing the pick 6 play. I killed penny for throwing that deep out INT pick 6 every week, but now Favre does it too. I think there is something up with that playcall. Also stop throwing a fade everytime in the endzone, those seem to get picked too. Overall the playcalling was vastly improved. There's still a lot of stupid motion stuff that doesn't fool anyone. Like we move Turner in motion, then throw to the other side and it almost gets picked (we had a false start on that play I think which would have saved us, but it was stupid). Defenses do not look at Turner and think "run to his side, let's just ignore everything else." Maybe OUR defense does something like that, but not other teams, they just blow the play up reacting to what we actually do. Maybe they'll get burned for it, maybe not, more likely than not since we're wasting time trying to decieve them though, they blow it up. We finally started using some playaction, which is one of the few forms of deception that you CAN use. You don't lose too much doing it and it is effective. The Eagles pass 75% of the time yet they STILL run play action fakes anyway.
NJeMKay14
We can't just throw the ball down the field like vintage Favre b/c Cotch and Coles ain't great deep threat receivers. Jennings and Driver > Coles and Cotch And I still think we need to run the ball more.
DoubleDown
I thought the defensive play calling was still awful. I disagree. The defense held Buffalo to 10 points for the entire game, caused 2 crucial turnovers, completely shut down the run, shut down Edwards' number 1 target Evans, and sacked Edwards 5 times. Great execution by the players, but you have to give some credit to the play calling. I'm not sure how much more you can reasonably expect. lawngnome o-line
People think that play calling is just the offensive side. Everyone completely ignores defensive play calling. No one is complimenting Mangini/Sutton for the corner blitz, on a play where the Bills are lining up with 3 on one side. They shifted a safety over and blitzed from the backside. That was a huge play, all based on playcalling and execution. Rhodes blitzed a bunch, and we didn't get burned deep because it was well timed and covered. How many times do you see highlights of Trent Edwards throwing a deep bomb on sportscenter. How many deep bombs did he throw against us. So not only did they not get deep against our blitzing, but it was our blitzing that caused sacks, fumbles, and INT's. Play-calling on the offensive side was also very good. Schotty balanced the run and the pass EXCEPTIONALLY, the only weak play call was the INT, not because of the INT, but when you are up 13, you do not throw on 1st down. You run, and start ticking the clock away. This is not the week to criticize the coaches and play calling. That ship sailed last week.
