Clinton Portis Admits That Redskins Took the Rams Too Lightly

clinton-portis-091308.jpgWhen you need some honesty in a gold and burgundy world, you just head to Clinton Portis.

Portis, who had a great game in an otherwise weird loss to the St. Louis Rams, was very candid about the Redskins mindset heading into and during the game:

"I think it's a focus thing," Portis said of today's offensive performance. "You know, the previous four games the focus was there. We knew that we couldn't go out and put ourselves in that position. We come out today and all of the sudden you start to get patted on the back and you feel like you're a better team, 'Ok, let me try to do this.' And we turn the ball over, and 'Oh, don't worry, we can come back.' And that didn't work."

"You know,
we overlooked a team that came here ready to play
. And me, honestly, we've been the underdogs since I've been here. And we came out with fight every game we was the underdog. Win, lose or draw, we came out to fight. So for us to expect St. Louis not to come out and fight, I don't know how we let them shock us like that."

Portis rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns so there are hardly any fingers pointed his way. He is right. This team was uncharacteristically careless with fumbles, dropped passes, missed assignements and an overall lack of concentration.

The Jets will be fine. They've already lost their one obligatory "game their supposed to win" for the season, so its not a problem. I feel like CIN and KC gave them good opportunities to work out the kinks while still picking up wins and Buffalo this week showed the culmination of a team finally coming together. This just wasn't some random offensive explosion like against the Cardinals, this was a quality performance across the board from the team. Not to mention, the run blocking and running game, a big issue early in the season, seem to get better every week which I think is going to help every aspect of the team. It'll help with TOP, keep the defense off the field more, take some pressure off of Favre. Not that this team is elite, but I think with some many new guys, it looks like they're starting to come together now.

Out of curiosity, which was the obligatory "game their supposed to win" last year?

I don't know... Cincy?

They were pretty awful and I think the Jets were actually favored. Plus they had just lost to KC of all teams.

Wow I'm impressed. I can't believe you guys even remember that train wreck of a season. I have suppressed much of it thankfully.

They did run the ball down Oakland's throat. Jones had around 25 carries. They still lost.

True but we started the game passing to establish the run. Hopefully they'll learn from that mistake, also we stopped going to him late in the game when it was clear they couldn't stop the run.

We'll win the game. Don't worry. Before too long we'll stack up the wins and we'll

all be talking like pats fans. "We are the best ever and everyone else sucks etc etc etc..."

and "Same old Jets" will still be a common phrase...but from winning all the time! :P
